Not much left, vermire included i would say around 3 hour, depend on your play style and exploration.
IF you had done all side mission and killed all ennemys on foot instead of using mako, you should be above lv 50
I don't have pinacle station but i reach lv57 during the last mission.
Anyway, i think you get the same bonus when you import your character, no matter his level.

For the waw and other tough ennemy, i suggest you to use the mako first, but give the final blow with your gun / shotgun / rifle / snip, it validate the extra xp and make the fight easier and shorter than only with your gun, less dangerous too.

I usually have some fun rolling over those big Geth, too.

Sounds to me like you haven't done all possible side quests, but those aren't critical, its a personal choice. Otherwise, yes, you are doing well and are on the home stretch of the game.

Main plotwise Chief, you don't have much left. Levelwise you got looooooooots of work to do. My advice would be if you're really that excited about ME2 (and why wouldn't you be), go ahead and push through the main plot and don't worry to much about what level you finish ME1 at. You can always playthrough it again later.

^^this is what i would also suggest.
for reference's sake, you can find a list of the assignments on the mass effect wikia page to see all of them. Pretty much one assignment per star system (each landable planet has one)
