WARNING - Some spoilers if you haven't played through ME1 and 2, LotSB, and read the three novels.

I've been thinking about who might end up aboard the Normandy in Mass Effect 3. Here's what I've come up with.

ME1

Wrex: Not likely to be aboard the Normandy. You're gonna need troops and Wrex is likely going to be one of the field generals, leading the Krogan people against the enemy.

Liara: Also not likely to be aboard the Normandy. You'll need the Shadow Broker at the center of her base of operations, coordinating the galaxy's biggest intelligence network, not fighting alongside you against husks.

Garrus: I suspect he'll be there. In fact, if there's one character I'd say is sure to be a squad mate in all three games, I'd say it would be Garrus. He's very much Shepard's wingman. He should be Shepard's XO. His Riker.

Tali: Not likely. Shepard will need someone he can trust coordinating with him on the Migrant Fleet. The Quarrians have the largest armada in the galaxy and it'll be needed to fight the Reapers. It is possible this role could be filled by Kal'Reegar, though.

VS: I'm not sure on Ashley/Kaiden. It could be they would make the perfect liason from the Alliance to Shepard. Or it could be that they're needed to lead others. It would be nice to see the VS made a Spectre in his/her own right.

ME2

Garrus and Tali are covered above.

Jack: I think there's a good chance Jack will return. Right now, she has no bigger role to play. She isn't a leader, she has no positive connections to a bigger group, unless Shepard uses her to coordinate independent pirate factions.

Miranda: Tough call. It depends partly on how big a role Cerberus plays in things. Miranda is, certainly, a potential coordinator there. On the other hand, she's got strong admin skills and Shepard may need her to coordinate the various forces needed. Its possible she may be crew aboard the Normandy but not active squad.

Jacob: Like Garrus, Jacob's with Shepard for the long hall. There's a slim chance he might be used to coordinate small groups like the corsairs or training troops but I think he'll be right there in the thick of things with Shepard.

Mordin: Assuming Mordin doesn't die of old age, he's too valuable to take into combat. On the fly R&D's going to be very, very important and he'll at the forefront of that R&D. Not likely.

Grunt: I suspect Grunt will be with Shepard. While he's Urdnot, his place is with battlemaster Shepard. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Wrex specifically told Grunt to stay with Shepard since Wrex couldn't be there himself.

Kasumi: Shepard's gonna need an infiltrator. It could be she'll be out there, doing recon and spying on the Reapers and their forces for Shepard but my guess is she'll be on the squad in a much more active role. Hopefully a potential LI role.

Zaeed: I'm half half on this. On the one hand, Zaeed knows what's at stake and a man like him would want to be in the thick of the action. On the other hand, someone will need to work with the merc groups and turn them into an army. While Zaeed isn't much of a leader, he knows them better than most. So maybe.

Thane: We'll see. If he's still alive and capable of action, I see him with Shepard. If not... well, it'll be sad.

Samara: Another tough call. Her quest is done. While Shepard is a kindred spirit it could be she's moved on with her career. Perhaps she's out there, making sure the Justicars do thier part. Maybe. Morinth, on the other hand, I think will have moved on. She can only repress her urges for so long and even renegade Shepard is likely to end her should she start draining crew.

Legion: Like Tali, Legion will be well suited to coordinating an alien group - in this case, the Geth - to help with the fight. However, unlike Tali, Legion doesn't actually need to be there. He can communicate remotely. I think there's a good chance he'll be with Shepard.

NOVELS

Kahlee Sanders: As seen at the end of the last novel, Kahlee has a part to play in the upcoming conflict. She could very well be just as important as Mordin. In fact, I can see the two of them working together to lead an R&D team (perhaps with Batha from Galaxy on it) to find ways to counteract Reaper technology and indoctrination.

Gillian Grayson: I would love to see Gillian, living inside a Quarrian enviro suit, as a squad member but I don't think she'll be old enough. Still, I suspect she, Captain Mal, and the Quarrian exploratory forces will prove to have a role in ME3.

OTHERS

David Anderson: By the end of the third novel, Anderson's no longer got a job. He's indicated he plans on preparing for the Reapers with or without the help of the Council or the Alliance. My guess is he'll be at the core of an interracial, independent group.... a more inclusive, less xenophobic Cerberus. He'll be crucial and he's got the military experience to help guide an intergalactic effort to fight the Reapers.

Udina: Someone has to represent humanity. He's a jerk. He's self-serving. But he's got a hide as thick as a rhino, has dozens of contacts, and can prove valuable.

Bailey: I'd like to see  Bailey as a squad member. He has an interesting character and a fantastic voice actor.  Kicked out of C-Sec for cutting corners and breaking the rules, perhaps, this might be a chance to redeem himself... especially if it means saving his family on Earth.

Aria: Important. As the leader of Omega, she's also the closest thing to a central authority the Terminus systems have. Getting her on board will be crucial, though not as a squad member.

Feron: Its quite possible he'll end up on the team, maybe even as a squad member. He could be Liara's liason to the Normandy. It would also be a chance to prove himself worthy of all the effort she put into his sorry butt.

Joker: Still piloting the Normandy, of course. Dr. Chakwas, EDI, Kelly, and the other named, minor crew should be there as well, unless their voice actors can't be signed for their roles.

---

What's your take on it?

Some interesting thoughts. I agree that ME3 would be great if Shepard's team consisted of one of each race in the galaxy (well the ones fighting anyway, can't really picture a hanar running around with a shotgun Posted Image).

There is a big difference in who I see returning and who I want to return to the game in ME3 as potential team members.

My favorite characters, whom I would really enjoy returning, are:

Krogan: Here I vote Grunt over Wrex. Story wise because it's not really possible, because you can kill Wrex in ME1, but mainly because I like the simple direct manner of Grunt much more than I like Wrex.

Asari: I would love to see Liara back in ME3, and I think she will be. Hard to imagine her as part of the team though considering you kind of need to have a DLC in order to see her in ME2, but would love to have her back on the team. Other than her, I have a hard time thinking of Samara as part of the team. I thought her character quite boring.

Turian: I agree with you on Garrus. An awesome character with a rich deep history in my opinion. ME3 will be better with him in it.

Quarians: Personally I fear that Bioware will put Tali back onto Shepard's team in ME3. I really find her annoying for some reason. If I could choose I would put Kal'Reegar on the team IF a certain actor would voiceact him again, so I could get my old Serenty feel back Posted Image

Humans: Many to pick from.
Ashely or Kaidan: Yes, they could function for this and considering they can be a LI in ME1, I do think you will see them again. Personally I will have no problem with whoever of them survived ME1 being the first to die in the Reaper attack on Earth, since I find both characters either boring (Kaidan) or irritating and whiny (Ashley).

Jacob: Same categori as above. After now 3 games of ME2, I am still thinking "why is that guy even in the game, he is so boring?". The character has no depth at all.

Jack: Now this is one cool character in my opinion. My main problem with her in ME2 is only that her skills lack in the effectiveness department, so I never ever use her on missions. However as a character I would love to see her back in ME3

Miranda: I think she is a certain adition to ME3 of all the humans. For one thing she is the main direct link to Cerberus, who will play a large part in ME3 (I think), afterall they are one of the major military forces in the terminus system. Also I really enjoy her character's depth and personality.

Kasumi / Zaeed: Both DLCs, so I really doubt we will see either in ME3 outside of another DLC pack. But personally I enjoy both their characters a lot, and I would like to see them return.

Salarians: I guess Mordin would depend on how far into the future ME3 plays out. I would love Mordin in it though. Of all characters in ME2, this is the one who's conversations I can't wait to play again and again. He is the main R&D guy as you call it, and a great "comic relief" for lack of a better term.

Drell: The hanar will ofcourse send their drell to assist, and I would enjoy seeing Thane again. His illness makes it unreaslistic, but his personality, demeanor, and character depth really took to me, and he is without a doubt one of my favorite characters of all of ME2.

Geth: Legion is a somewhat anonymous character in ME2 (to me at least), albeit a very powerful and useful one. I would like a Geth team member with some real depth, but it doesn't necessarily have to be Legion.

Other characters:

Anderson & Udina: Definately returning. Their relationship is the standard military versus politican with both hating each other but at the same time being somewhat dependent of each other. I like both and would enjoy seeing them back. Just like I would like to see the well meaning but stubborn to admit there is Reapers council back. I like that kind of gray area moral decisions and topics politics always seem to circle in (in these types of games at least ...well, in real life often as well Posted Image)

Aria: Should definately return, and even be explored further. This might actually be one asari I could see as a team member, and potential new LI.

Joker: The game just wouldn't be the same without Seth Green's puns as Joker, sp bring him back please.

New characters:
The tough question to answer here for me is: how on earth will Bioware handle all the persons Shepard has encountered throughout ME1 and ME2. Hwo big a squad can they actually build for him without turning the entire game into a squad building game (I mean, more than it is). They kind of have to introduce new characters for new potential LIs as well, not to mention shortly bring back the old ones. Also what if I as shepard only survived with 1-2 squad members left in ME2, then they'll have to bring in an entire new squad. It will be quite interesting to see.

I think that all the squadmates from ME1 and ME2 will be on the Normandy in ME3.

Wrex: Wrex can die in ME1, so he might just be helping you in the battle by rallying the Krogan together.

Tali: Her she's an LI and she has been with Shepard in ME1 and ME2. She also has a huge fanbase. It would be a betrayal and a stupid idea not to put her in ME3.

Garrus: Same as Tali.

Liara: Same as Tali and Garrus.

Ashley/Kaidan: Same as Tali, Garrus, and Liara

Squadmates from ME2: Bioware said that if they survive the suicide mission they'll be with you in ME3. So why wouldn't they be?

Kasumi/Zaeed: If anything, they'll more than likely just have cameos because they're DLC characters.

I can see from previous comments that some don't want certain characters in ME3 just because they don't like them. Sorry, buddy, that is just how it is.

Plus Tali has the 50% of chances to be exiled... where she'll go in that case? Also, I can understand the dislike for a certain character, but it shouldn't prevent your objectivity. For example, I'm not a big fan of Miranda (I don't hate her too, but damn... all those ass-shots are ridiculous) but I don't spend time thinking about lame reasons to don't have her back. I prefer to hope that in ME3 she'll be developed better and that I'll change my opinion of her. I suggest you to do the same... be positive boyz.

I agree with most of the above, but am a little bit sad species wise. Unless they create another awesome species like Drell, we've run out of good ones. Does anyone want a Batarian, Vorcha, or Volus at your back?

A huge leap going from someone stating they don't like the writing of a character story to saying they hate said character. Hate is a very strong word - at least for me, and a bit too strong for a computer game. No need to jump from an individual's personal preferences and opinions to say they can't ever be objective, make up lame reasons, and can't have their own opinion about a given character.

Interesting about what Bioware has stated about ME2 characters being with you in ME3 if they didn't die, this I haven't heard before. Will make it quite cool to see how they interact new characters into the story with so many around.

It was a general consideration, based on things I saw many times previously on the forum. You can, off course, have your own opinion and I'll respect it.

I'm not attacking you, but I what I really wanted to say was that we should come up  with legitimate reasons if we don't want a character in ME3, not just because you find them irritating or boring. That may lead to others thinking you are bashing (I don't think you are;)), If you don't like a character that's fine. But for this topic, please try to come up with legitimate reasoning, not just based on whether you liked them or not.

I don't think you need Tali for coordinating Migrant fleet and she can be exiled/dead/disloyal/disloyal and hates you.

Also Kal'Reegar can die in ME2 so I highly doubt it.

I'm pretty optimistic that Garrus and Tali will both make it as squadmates right through the trilogy. They are possibly the two most popular characters, like it or not. And for both of them, their story arc isn't quite finished...

I will form more of an opinion on the VS once some DLC comes out ;)

Liara, Wrex and (possibly) Samara all have their own obligations.

Jack: I love Jack as a character, but I can't see her returning as a squadmate for ME3. I know many people didn't like her character, and she doesn't seem to be the type to stick around one place for too long. But a cameo? Definately.

Miranda: I suspect Miranda will be in ME3 as a squadmate. She is the leading NPC of ME2 and she is difficult to get killed on the suicide mission. Although, if the collector base is destroyed, she may follow her loyalties back to Cerberus and assist Shepard from there.

Jacob: Jacob's character is not as fully developed for me to form a proper opinion. But he doesn't appear to have anywhere else to go apart from the Normandy, he doesn't have strong ties to Cerberus like Miranda does.

Legion: His mission was to study organics. He was designed specifically for this job. He appears to have grown a specific attachment for Shepard, I think he will stick with them on the Normandy.

Grunt: He now has a clan. An identity and a purpose, as he says so himself. I got the feeling that he was along for the ride to stop the collectors, and that after that, he would serve clan Urdnot.

Thane: I don't like how everyone dismisses him being in ME3 due to the fact that he will be dead by then. He says he has 8-12 months left. I assume the collector mission (after recruiting Thane) only took a couple of weeks. And from the screenshot of the reapers advancing at the end, I believe ME3 will take place shortly after ME2. He may die in game, but it will be an epic death.

Mordin: Will probably work aboard the Normandy, but not as a squadmate, like others have proposed.

Kasumi/Zaeed: As much as I love Kasumi, they are both DLC characters they will probably just get a cameo...

And Joker and Chakwas are ppretty much cemented onto the Normandy, whether or not it gets blown to pieces...

Actually one of the interviews before ME2 came out said that they specifically left Kaidan, Ashley, and Liara to smaller roles because they wanted them to survive ME2 so they could play a larger role in ME3. It also said that their romances were meant to be part of the trilogy and that ME2 was just the second chapter of their romance.

I hope they all play larger parts in ME3 because Kaidan/Ashley are my favorite characters, though I also am starting to like Miranda/Tali/Liara. I'm indifferent to most of the rest of them.

One thing I am 100% certain is that Miranda will be on the team, for simple reason, she picked Shepard over Cerberus.

I ain't talking about romancing her (Liara LI myself) but when base choise comes she agrees with Shepard no matter what and if you take it out she tells TIM that he can consider that act her resignation. So, if you did Paragon choice you break your ties with Cerberus and Miranda stays with you.

Hmm, true that. I take back what I said about Miranda perhaps working for Cerberus if the base is blown up.

And there was an interview that said that? Cool. I will get round to having a 'faithful' ME1 LI. But for the moment, my personal preferences are the ME2 options. I saved Ash, she is such a real character and I hope she gets a major role in ME3.

Yep, if you bring Miranda to final fight TIM talks through her Omni-tool and when you say you'll blow it TIM orders Miranda to stop you. She declines, he repeats I GAVE YOU AN ORDER. Her response was: I've noticed, consider this my resignation, and then gives Shepard the charges.

Since Liara is the only squadmate in either game that is not possible to have been killed no matter how you played, I would be really surprised if she didn't play a huge role. Though, as someone pointed out above, she's needed more at the Shadow Broker base. Though maybe Feron could take over as the Shadow Broker if she joined Shepard? I'd also be surprised if the Virmire Survivor wasn't on your team. Miranda seems like another likely party member, as does Garrus.

I don't see Jack or Samara returning as squadmates. Samara was only signed on for the one mission, and Jack just doesn't seem like the type to stick around.

I hope since I romanced Thane, that there will be a huge emotional climax  during his death scene. After seeing the beautifully written letter to Shepard I hope his death will be just as romantic and heartbreaking. It would be nice for a romance to have some more substance, other than flirt, bang, gtfo.

I think whatever they do they should add a Batarian squad member. As far as Returning:

Legion; Ash/Kaidan; Tali; Garrus; Jacob; Miranda; Jack; Grunt; Kasumi; Zaeed

With those ten I'd say they add three more, one a Batarian please, the guy from the tower in the video, and last maybe a Tazzik like character (a big bad Salarian hit-man type). You'll notice I have no Asari; that's not because I dislike them, just because I don't think we need one, and I'd rather see some depth from some other race.

Although I hope atleast some ME2 characters will come back in ME3, remember that they could have been killed in the suicide mission. This makes it extremely hard to put them in the squad in ME3 right? I think Bioware can only put them back in the story, but not as squadmates. This way it'll be the same as with Wrex: Was the character killed? Then some other, new character, just replaces that role.

Makes everything alot simpler for Bioware

Just adding a quick link to the ME2 interview discussing the Ashley/Kaidan thing. I got the link from the Mass Effect wiki in the Romance Section - it was listed as a work cited:

In my opinion, it all depends on how far Bioware is willing to take the continuation of the story between games. If you think about it, there's been (I think...) 16 "real" squadmates (counting morinth/samara as one), out of these, you have at least 2 who survived (either Ash or Kaidan, and Liara), and at least 1 potential LI (Liara).
That's all you need... it would be great if "screwing" both ME1 and ME2 forced you to play through ME3 facing almost impossible odds with no other choice than Kaidan, Ash, and Liara as squadmates.

Of course, this would be an extreme case, and I doubt a lot of people have a main shepard who lost or killed more than 10 squadmates, but Bioware could very well include just the survivors in ME3, so if you didn't lost anyone, you'll have 15 potential squadmates (maybe forcing choices, like Wrex would only come in Grunt died in me2, kasumi would follow you only if you let her keep the memory box, Liara would come only if you romanced her or if everybody else is dead...etc) , and if you lost everyone, well, say hello to Ash and Liara.

I'm aware this sounds more like wishful thinking than realistic hopes... so I'll just say that I think a few NPCs from the first 2 games will come back as squadmates : Garrus, Tali, Miranda, Grunt, maybe a few others, and then we'll probably have a few newcomers, probably including a new asari, maybe Bailey, Feron...

The way I see it, in ME3 past squad mates will fall into one of three groups: serving as a squad member again, helping Shepard in some non-combat role, or getting their species ready to fight the Reapers. Here's what I'm seeing for each person (for most of these, feel free to add "assuming they're alive" to each sentence, I'm not going to write it over and over).

ME1 Characters:
-Ashley/Kaidan: I can't picture them not being a squad mate in the next game.
-Wrex: will be uniting the krogan.
-Liara: as the new Shadow Broker, she'll likely serve as a major source of intel for Shepard.
-Tali: getting to be a squad mate for two games is probably good enough, I wouldn't make her one a third time. She could be preparing the Quarians for the Reapers, or have her stay on the Normandy as chief engineer.
-Garrus: same as Tali. Returning to the Turians doesn't seem to quite fit his character,so maybe he takes it upon himself to form a squad of his own to help Shepard's instead (which I think works well with the Shadow Broker dossier on him, which said that he had leadership potential, which was being stifled by his tendency to defer to Shepard; more independence for him would be a good thing).

ME2 Characters:
-Miranda and Jacob: near-certainty they'll both be squad members again, I think.
-Zaeed and Kasumi: will probably go back to their own business, although I wouldn't be surprised to see them show up in some side quests.
-Mordin: I'm thinking he retires from combat, but stays on as your personal researcher.
-Grunt: either returns to Clan Urdnot, or again serves under "Battlemaster" Shepard. I'm leaning towards the latter.
-Jack: I honestly have no clue what she'll do.
-Thane: same as Jack.
-Samara: probably try to get the Asari ready for the Reapers. I'm thinking Justicars have enough pull in Asari society to be heard on something like that.
-Legion: doesn't actually need to be physically present to warn the geth, besides, he comes into play somewhat late in ME2, and deserves some more time as a squad member, I think.

ME1 characters:

Kaiden/Ashley: Will be a squad mate, and for those who kept their chill and stayed loyal will get a very special greeting. :D

Tali: correct, she was in me1 and me2 so she should be one in me3 unless she died for you guys.

Garrus: practically best friends with shepard so yeah he's gotta be in me3 as a squad mate.

Liara: Is going to be the new TIM imo but not a squad mate. hopefully will have plenty of dialogue compared to other characters.

Wrex: Have no clue, don't really care either.

Mass Effect 2 characters:

All should stay as squad mates, but some were only there for collectors not reapers so.

I'm 100 percent positive that Garrus and Tali will be returning to your squad.  They are both extremely popular, and if I know anything about bioware, it's that they pay attention to the fanbase.  That's probably the reason they both made it back in ME2.  Not to mention, it wouldn't make any sense to have them for the first two games and not the third one. As for the others...
Liara:  Most likely will be the shadow broker and give you intel.  I wouldn't doubt if she was able to accompany you on certain missions possibly.

Miranda/Jacob:   They are both obviously returning.  It seems very likely that they will be with Shepard should he tell TIM to F*** off and destroy the base.  If he decides to keep the base, they still have no reason to leave his ship or his command.

Ashley/Kaidan:  They will come back in style...just you wait and see.
Morinth:  She doesn't have any reason to stick around with Shepard...especially since she's a narcotic serial killer.
Jack:  Honestly, I have no clue
Thane:  He will be dying, so I suppose there may be something about that.
Samara:  Another one that they could go either way with.  Whether she's a squad mate or a cameo, I still want to see her return.
Grunt:   He's obsessed with Shepard.  He claims to Wrex that Shepard is his battle master and has no equal.  It is possible he could return to Tuchanka, but he seems loyal to Shepard IMO
Wrex:  He's the big dog Krogan Daddy Badass...He has to keep his people in line.
Zaeed/Kasumi:   They won't be there as main squad mates.  Unless Bioware makes DLC for them.
Mordin:  He's going to be Shepard's Witch Doctor on the ship.
Legion:   Without a doubt he's coming back.

:   There are other possibilites as to who may or may not join the squad.  It seems very likely that we will be recieving a new Asari, since Liara will be busy and we're not sure what's going to happen with Samara yet.  There's also the possibliity of recieving a new turian/quarian/human...there's no telling what might happen.  I am guessing they may add a few new characters, or possibly make NPC's from ME1 or ME2 become squad mates.  I personally wouldn't mind seeing either Shiala, Kal'Reegar, Aria, or possibly a female turian.   Although that's just wishful thinking.  I wouldn't rule out them just making new characters.  It's all up in the air right now, but one thing is certain... they may continue to make characters in new DLC after Mass Effect 3 is released.  That's just my guess though.

hmm...the title says characters, so....

...Shiala. The Thorian after-effects "could" have affected her biotic abilities to make them much more powerful. Perhaps by ME3 she'll know how to control them (again).

...Aria. If we don't go back to Omega, which for some reason I slightly doubt we will, she will back be in some form. Perhaps because she has lost something dear to her (maybe wanting to get back at Cerberus for *technically* killing her daughter, if I remember correctly).

...Kal'Reegar. He was voiced by Adam Baldwin, and having him only in ME2 without him returning in some form would make his character that much less important.
