I've seen that the game is supposed to be run with dx9.0c,  but I'm not sure how to implement that. I've lowered my in game specs to the lowest they can be and still experience these in game freeze.

The first thing you should try is rolling back your drivers. This can occasionally solve graphical issues for people with certain older cards using the latest drivers. This however doesn't seem like a graphics issue.

Have you played other games with no problems on your notebook? Perhaps you should pick up a program that monitors your core tempretures. See how hot things are getting when you play games. Many notebooks have poor cooling and get very hot while gaming which causes errors.

You should try to describe a little more your problem.

Is there message error? is it black screen? did you come back to windows or do you have to reboot your computer? what where you doing while playing when it happen (dialogue / mako / shooting etc)?

You can also try to make the game re-detect your configuration, it helped me to solve rendering crash during dialogues, not saying it will work for everything though.

If the install didn't automatically add the Dx9 APIs while it installed the game, I'd be surprised, because it uses some library files from Dx9 when it loads and will fail to load if they aren't found.

You can download and install DirectX 9.0c here. Your graphics card shouldn't even be running DX 11; the Geforce 8000 series was a DirectX 10 generation.

The game freezes and video and audio stop and sputter. It doesn't really matter what is happening, I could be traveling in and elevator at the citadel or could be a scene of dialogue or a firefight, the game will just freeze for about 30 seconds to a minute and then it will play as normal.

I'll try some of the recommendations here. thanks

You could look to see if background tasks are interfering. Set ME1 to run in a window (and at a lower resolution than your desktop, of course), then bring up the task manager's processes tab and keep an eye on it while you play. (Sorting by CPU use will help make it clear if anything's demand for CPU power is spiking.) See if you notice any programs taking a significant percentage of CPU cycles when this happens. Might also be good to note if the whole comp freezes up when it does this in windowed mode, or if it's just ME1.

Taken from the back of the box:

Supported chipsets: nVidia GeForce 6800GT or greater; ATI Radeon
X1300 XT or greater. Laptop versions of these chipsets may work, but are
not supported
