It's a little ham handed the only way to spare Loghain is to put Anora on the throne. Considering Alistair is fairly wishy-washy and if you have good persuade skills you can persuade anyone to do anything....
Then in that one decision Alistair grows a steel spine and will force you to kill Loghain. He's usually reasonable...now he just wants revenge.
That one is just a bit too heavy handed.
I have to disagree with your assessment of Alistair. He agrees to let you lead, but there are few decisions that he disagrees with where he doesn't express some doubts about the way you're heading, or get hugely pissed off. It's a game, and he's required for plot reasons, so he can't stop you or walk away until the crisis point, but he's not unclear. He's actually the only companion wh consistantly tells you what he thinks of you straight out. And he's very clear about wanting to avenge Duncan, the wardens and the king. That's not new at the Landsmeet.

Yeah - what were we thinking in not including more complexity? Especially options that would have gone against the character of those involved.
