To start, here's my specs.

Mass Effect 1 PC Version
Digital Download (Direct2Drive)
AMD Phenom II X4 955 / Quad Core / 3.2Ghz / 4GB DDR3
Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 / 1GB / Catalyst Version 10.12, Driver Packaging Version 8.812-110104a-111988C-ATI
Realtek High Definition Audio / 6.0.1.6235
(also shows AMD High Definition Audio Device / 7.12.0.7700)
Windows 7 64-Bit Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600
DirectX 11 (ran an install of 9.0c, as per suggestion, considering how people say it helps)

Problem#1 -- game hangs without explanation other than 'Windows has detected a problem' after title screen prompts 'Press Any Key' and said key is pressed
Problem#2, must be solved first -- I uninstalled and reinstalled, kind of instinctively (it was 4 in the morning), and now when I type in my key it cancels installation.

All drivers are updated, and the game did at one point start.

Originally I did. Had no effect. Again, I'm having trouble installing period at this moment so that's not the current issue.

A direct download, like one from Direct2Drive, probably comes already patched.

Hard to know what to say about the activation without knowing the specific error message. Or is there none?

I have the 1.02 patch standing by just in case.

It's just 'The installation of Mass Effect has been cancelled.  To run the installer again, please run Setup.'

Another detail possibly relevant -- I got SEVERAL e-mails from Direct2Drive about beginning the installation.  (Sent in a support ticket to d2d just in case they can do something with my key from that end.)  I recall they say there's a limit of three installations, and this genuinely would be my second.  The Loader Uninstall page mentioned it had removed authorization that one time though.

Oh, and BtdS was installed even before I ran the game once.  I've heard that has deauthorization problems in and of itself.

Running as admin, or with admin rights? My Documents in the default location, or has it been moved?

Officially, Win7 isnt supported with ME1. Sometimes it can be pot luck wether or not it installs and/or runs.
