I'm about 15 hours in, loving the story and role-playing my city-born elf who has a real gruge against humans ... (Sometimes I want to turn around and tell Aliaster and Morrigan to both put a sock in it ...)

But I'm finding the combat a tedious bore. I enjoyed the combat in Oblivion, The Witcher, Fallout 3, and even Divinity 2 quite a bit, so I guess I'm more action-oriented. I tried turning the difficulty level down to easy, as suggested in another thread, but that made things worst, because now the fights aren't even challenging. I dislike micro-managing my companions - I want to play my character, and have my companions fight sensibly without my having to dictate their every move. Any suggestions? Is there perhaps a "DA combat for noobs" thread, or a mod to make the game more action-oriented?

You can do a fair amount with tactics. Other people would be better able to tell you exactly how should set it up (I'm a compulsive micromanager). My suggestion would be to look at the tactics, and see if you can set something up to let your companions "fight sensibly".

The default tactics are generally fairly sensible, but usually need a good tweak depending on how you want your characters to perform. It's worth taking the time to get familiar with it. It might look a bit daunting at first, but it soon makes perfect sense.

Yes good tactics will let you mop up most mobs even on Nightmare without any issues. Heck sometimes I wish there was away not to control any characters as my party is more than capable of auto-smacking their way through most fights.

As a rule for NPC's, I place Tactics under Default or Defender for melee specialists, and Ranged for archers and casters.

If you are playing a S&S Warrior, I find most of the other options more exciting, IMO; should improve the experience for you.

At least have your companions attack the same enemy, so they work together and kill faster. I usually tell them to all attack the same enemy as the tank, whether that's Alistair or my warden. I also prefer to have melee fighters on defensive behavior, except for the tank who's on aggressive, and the ranged companions on passive or ranged.

Enemy: Target of <tank>: <name of talent> or attack

If you have a healer mage in the party, it may help to have them use regeneration at 90% health and heal at 75%. The defaults have them heal at 25%, which is cutting it close. I also have my healers use spells like group heal and force field, or mind blast if they come under melee fire.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm figuring out the tactics a little bit, which helps - your tips are much appreciated, Arthur.

I think what I really miss from the other games I mentioned is the immediate response from your avatar - double-tap "w" in The Witcher, and Geralt would immediately do an airborne somersault forward. Now that was fun. :) That's just not how this game works. Ah, well. On the other hand, no other game I've played lets you eavesdrop on your companions' conversations as you stroll along ...

DA2 is supposed to address the "immediate response" issue.

I've created countless characters in Origins, and much trial and error occurred with making tactics. I picked up the prima strategy guide with my game and went from there. The tactics I use with my companions is different from what they have in there, but it was a start. Once you get comfortable with the tactics system, you'll wonder where the difficulty in the game went.

I mostly ignore my companions in combat unless they have low health or I want them to attack a particular opponent so then i move to them to instruct them. I probably need to take a better look at tactics for my next game though. I've played it twice, it's time to look into the stuff I ignored the first times! ;-)

The game is much easier when you personalize the tactics of your allies. At least have them set to attack the same enemy.

I will do that next time. The only time I changed it in the past was becasue Sten and either Oghren or Shale would insist on attacking a large group of bad guys I was trying to avoid in the Orzammar mission and I really needed them to follow me to a different area instead of initiating combat with darkspawn further in the room - I changed it back later because I needed them to voluntarily engage with the enemy again.

Turn it on easy and blast your way through. It makes the combat shorter, and you can enjoy the party banter and story line better.

I guess I am in a minority - I like pausing the game often! This can be boring with a melee fighter (it was for me), but with a mage or even rogue with special talents, it is an absolute blast! Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I love chess :)

Well...you should love DA2. Me, not so much. I loved the combat in DA:O precisely because it was what it was. You had to think strategically, you had to use tactics and make your party work together, and you had to pause to set it all up, because if you didn't, it was challenging enough that you'd get blown out of the water. For me, that's exactly why it wasn't boring, as well as being the same old action combat of every other game out there. Now, I enjoyed Oblivion and Fallout, and I enjoyed Divinity 2, but the combat...well, it's an adreneline thing. It's not intrinsically interesting. You don't have to use your brain, you just need a big enough gun.
