Hello all. I own the Steam version of Mass Effect 1 and am having problems. I don't think this is a glitch, but I could be wrong.

It was with my understanding that in Saren's base, on the level where I have read Ashley/Kaiden will die, I am supposed to "clear out" the area in the Krogan factory that the Normandy will land on. I have removed every single enemy from that whole map--and, for good added measure, have destroyed all those little "fuel containers" in the landing space--yet nothing happens. Furthermore, I am stuck in that general area. I cannot progress forward to the second "Breeding Trench" and when I try to backtrack the door control panel has turned red. I am effectively stuck in the landing strip forever.

What the heck am I supposed to do? The journal says I've got to clear the area....I've tried checking various guides on gamefaqs and they all make it sound like after I "clear out" the area the Normandy will land and the game will progress forward but I've been randomly running around for about a whole half hour (in REAL LIFE time!) and have had nothing happen in the game!

What gives? Any ideas of what I'm supposed to do or where I'm supposed to go in order to get the game to progress??

Sounds like you hit a glitch. 

Try reloading a previous save and clearing it out again.  Anything from before you go into the landing zone should work....

I read a guide and it said that there were three total AA towers I had to take out before the Normandy could land, which would explain my problem, since I can only find one. I read on the same guide that I have to "follow the one I can see in the distance" but I guess it's my graphics on my computer but I don't see a second AA tower anywhere off in the distance. The only AA tower I know of besides the first one is the one on the opposite end of the landing space in the Krogan Breeding Trenches, but as I said before, the door to get to that elevator or whatever it is is completely inaccessible--it's not even locked or "red"--it's just not selectable or anything at all...it's just like as if it's a wall....I'll try re-doing the level and seeing if I'm able to open the door the second time around but I'd be really pissed off and upset if I'm doing something wrong that should be a lot more obvious than it really is

It's been a while since I played that part, so I'm going from memory. I thought there were only two towers in the base, the first you turn off as you pass and the second that whoever you send with the salarians is supposed to be taking care of.



The second AA tower you won't even get to, depending on whether you save the person at the tower or the person at the bomb site.



Regardless, I did have one run through (on the XBox) where I got stuck at the landing zone - the enemies were dead, the cutscene didn't trigger, and I couldn't move forward. I reloaded an earlier save from before I got to that point and the cutscene triggered after I cleared out the landing zone as per normal.
