It's stupid and unfair.

So... If you think about this logically, the males who have children in life (and in game) normally need a female counterpart. All the 'family' relationships found in the game are hetrosexual; thus, one male and one female are required in order to have children.

Did I miss something?

The fact that the person was talking about a female warden?  That equals male + female.

Edit: but I do think that female wardens could have a baby with Zevran and male wardens could have a baby with Leliana, though there's no mention made of it anywhere.  It's just Alistair + female warden where it's impossible.
