I wouldn't go that far!  But, I do fear that they are building the Qunari to be villains for future games.  The more imposing 'devilish' appearance so that players will feel more accomplished and righteous when crushing them.

I hope that is not their motive but I do fear it.

Hmm. Well, that may be so. Then, again, the Qunari have been foreshadowed to be possible future antagonists (maybe not in DAO II, but sooner or later), so maybe it isn't all that surpising.

They are basically a different race. Yet people are fine with them looking like humans.

Because they are still a sub-type of human. They are not a different race(species in this context really). Where as the Qunari are not human(at all) and are a different race. The Qunari according to the game are a different race as Argonian's are to the human races.

Are Argonians not cold blooded reptile people? If I follow your reasoning the need to change their looks is because people couldn't see them as a race if they didn't look significantly different. Isn't that sad? They needed to make a change so people could see them as a race and now I am getting told to not get upset about art change since it is 'only' the look that changed. As if I am the one who is superficial. I know better than that.

as I said if the original differenced had been capitalized on the horns would not have been needed

I don't expect the Qunari to be painted as straight up villians after Sten in the first game, but it's obvious they're going to be future antagonists.  Sten basically said they're going to invade Thedas with the intent to conquer, so unless one of the future pc's is a qunari, they're obviously going to be antagonists in the future.

Well, the Qunari ARE on a "crusade" with the intention to bring the Qun to all unenlighted and as you say, Sten drops plenty of hints that sooner or later, they'll resume doing that.

*sigh*. I'm REALLY hoping for the next Dragon Age game to take place in the Tevinter Imperium now...

Anyway, whenever the Qunari start their invasion, I bet that the PC (no, not necressarilly Hawke) will have a role of some sort to play in that.

I'm not sure many people are aversed to the change, but simply the rather hamfisted way BioWare tried to justify the change.

"They were horned all along! Except for all the ones you ever saw." It's just sloppy and lazy, since there are arguably better explanations.

something along the lines of Vultus 5's Boazans would actually have worked a little better in my opinion

Like what? Instead of just being rude and calling them lazy, how about you offer something constructive.

honestly dear Harley I'd have taken something like this (or something along those lines) as an explanation why all the soldiers we saw in DAO were hornless as opposed to the "oh yeah all Qunari have horns just not all the ones you saw in DAO"

What?

There is nothing "constructive" to be added in that context.
It is certainly not sloppy and lazy to redesign an entire race, but it is sloppy and lazy to give us an explanation like that.

I'm against it, personally.
What would you say if they went back in Mass Effect III, and redesigned the entire turian species to make them less human, more reptile?

That is how I view the current topic. I like their new look, it just don't think it makes any sense at all.

Personally I am ok with Retcons, some people will complain but I can respect somebody who admits they made a mistake and wants to correct it, or says they have a new idea for something and want to implement it.  The thing about a retcon is it doesnt ignore the old content, it tells you the old content was wrong and that you have to change it.  They are not going to redesign Origins of course, but you have to suspend disbelief and pretend the horns where there.

To come out and say, well some Qunari dont have horns, and it just so happens the hundred or so qunari you have seen so far are those rare little snow flakes that dont have horns, is rediculous, either lacking horns is common, which is the opposite of what they say, or we all should go play the lottery.

We only saw qunari mercenaries who would be tal'vashoth who tend to remove their horns. and the qunari who accompanied sten to ferelden were born without horns like sten and are used as emmisaries because they are considered less threatening. Those explanations are just fine to me and anything else would be much worse IMO.

Edit: sorry about the mess :pinched:

Don't you know that when you graduate from video game making school a large orangutan beats you about the head with a metal pipe resulting in horrific brain damage.  Conversely owning a computer makes you an expert on all facets of video game making, especially design and marketing.
So all forumites that aren't professional game makers are eleventybillion times better at making video games than the devs.

They hate them because they reconned an entire race. This is a big no-no in all writer circles.

They reconned them because they wanted to make characters "different" and "unique" rather than just regular old types of humanoids.

You know Bioware, you don't have to pander to people who need dichotomy in their stories.

dear, you are smater than the average forumite.....their horns are the size of their bloody wrists and removing them would leave rather noticeable stumps....which were not there in DAO at all nor they were ever mentioned in any codex entry. I'm sorry, you know I love Bioware and their games but that explanation does feel like a handwave

It was magic, dammit!

Seriously though, my point was that this was the best explanation you could hope for with something like this.

-shrugs- Bioware said they would explain the lack of armor on those Qunari in the screenshots but in all honesty they never said they would explain the horns conundrum.

at this point I'm not really expecting an explanation for it at all

Edit: -points to my link-

Thou shalt have an answer to thy questions crimzontearz and it is this: All things are possible under the Qun, think on this and acknowledge its truth.

One man's sloppy and lazy is another's simple and convenient.

I'd much rather the explanation we got  than some overtly complex shenanigans involving magic or cross breeding or  deal with mephisto to save Aunt May... <_<

Then there's always the "We changed them. They all have horns now. So ignore everything you saw before because now sten is a giant albino triceratops" route they could have taken. That would have been even worse.

Honestly "eh some qunari have horns, some dont. The some don't are the ones that got sent to ferelden" isn't as bad as some people make it out to be.

The change in the Qunari is MUCH more than just them having horns.

Body shape, facial features, warpaint, hair.  Their hands look like claws in some shots.

In other words, the entire visual concept has changed.
They aren't, at all, as humanoid as they were in DA:O.
