I'm curious. The dog can be such an interesting, tolerable companion, yet he simply is a bit too weak for either tanking or damage dealing. Whenever I come across a landmark in my playthrough I'd feel rather bumped out, considering that there is so much content laid out for the dog, yet no one is encouraged enough to take the dog out due to his weak combat efficency.

There really needs to be a mod or something that buffs the dog up.

I would also love to hear the benefits of bringing your dog along. I've already seen that he can find some really useful things out there, but I really know next to nothing about him. Why give him gifts when his approval is already 100 for example?

Those bones are for people. >>

Apparently when you have dog in your party and go up to a landmark, your entire party will receive some benefits while in that area.

The gifts are for role-playing. You also can give companions gifts when they're over 100 approval.

There are a few scenes where people specifically comment on the dog.

While he's not a tank, he's an okay damage dealer. The problem is that he has no other skills.

The landmarks give your dog a buff if you let him mark his territory..He is AWESOME at getting mobs off of a Mage/Archer, with Overwhelm, And alot of the Banter is to die for.

I feel a bit sorry for him...When i go to my camp he's lying on the ground, waiving his tail. Why did they only allow us to take 3 more members in a party?

I love the Mabari. You will come upon places of interest where you can select your Mabari and investigate it for a bonus to combat, and items. Besides that he's not a bad fighter, especially later on.

the second play through i am going through now i am keeping him with me .... though i may lose him to ohgren .... the point where you first enter the market district of denerim with him and he runs off to get the boy is funny .... and if you talk to hom right after a battle you get a "can you do anything about this mess?" dialogue option though i have yet to figure out what the purpose is other then it gets rid of a lot of the gorey mess it seems like

I personally think that the Dog should have been a special companion which you can take with you all the time without using a slot.

The reason behind Bioware limiting the party to 4 is that with more than 4 characters all requiring caring controls, the game may become too hectic. Well, the dog hardly requires any control compared to other characters. He doesn't talk, doesn't affect or be affected by party decisions and isn't gear-dependent.

The purpose of getting rid of the mess is it cleans all the blood off your main Character.

hmmm diddn't notice that ... but what is the actual effect of "cleaning up" ... how does it effect game play?

My PC travels no where without two of her companions. Rabbit the dog, and Wynne the healer. The third slot I have considered interchangeable depending on the quest. Rabbit is worth taking along for the "do you see anything interesting" alone- he has brought me everything from expensive wine to a little kid.

But usually, in my party- given that I am an offensive tank, Dog stays with Wynne and protects her from harm. Once he gets Nemesis- he is awesome at it.

The only part that I am disappointed by was Dog's sequence in the Fade. I was expecting dog to be with my clone, enjoying life and I'd have to convince him that I was his real owner. Or if stuck in a nighmare, by a corpse that he believed was mine. Instead...well...no harm- Dog more than made up for it by being a most delightful and useful NPC.

@GhoXen. Yea, that's a good point. And besides the hectic, which would just get annoying, the world is just too small. The rooms too small. The caves are too small. Sometimes I find it frustrating to get three melee on a single target at the same time.

But to the topic - Dog is great so far. I'm about halfway through, I think. And overwhelm is beyond useful. I have to say it's my favorite ability. He's also the fastest character - he can close the distance between him and an enemy in half the time it takes everyone else.

HA! this is where I am an expert. Your Mabri is a GREAT companion to have with you. He can find items for you, and he does great damage. Keep his STR, DEX, and CON up. Also add some Willpower in there for his increase in stamina. When he gets a high enough level, unlock his Overwhelm ability. Works on human bosses and them yellow threats. His Dread Howel works wonders when you are surrounded. In some fights with Mages, I will bring my Mabri, cause there is no chance for them to stand up after my Mabri Overwhelms them. There is a reason it costs a minute to cooldown.

Nemesis is a great skill as well. He is not a tank, and shouldn't be played as one. He is mostly a support/DPS tool. If you have problems with Archers, Mages, and Rogues, bring the Mabri with you. Overwhelm them, and they go down in seconds flat.

I didnt play on Hard or Nightmare but

I've found his pounce and rake(?) abilities are pretty awesome. He was one of my favorite party members for those, especially since if I have all the aggro (I went and played a Tanker), he'll pin down and rape one of the enemies with pounce.

All of this intrigues me.  I may try him next time. ^_^

I love Dog, but he lacks a real backstory, so he doesn't get as much development. I'll bring him along to see what his interjections are - he has a good sense of whom I should kill and whom I should let live.

Those interactions between Dog and other party members in the party camp were very interesting at the start, and I was rather disappointed when they stopped. There should have been more! More interactions! Not only with party members either, dog should have interacted with faction emissaries and Sandal.

I agree - I wish there were several more camp interactions ith Dog and the party members. I never got ones with Zevran, Oghren and Shale either.

good point ... i have noticed anyone you may end up actually fighting he will start growling at (demons especially).

as for back story i honestly can't help but wonder about the kid he "finds" in denerim and whether there is more to that that no one has unlocked yet

The one hassle with the dog is that you have to bring dog biscuits instead of healing potions for your dog. The stamina regeneration feature of those cookies on the other hand reduces the need of giving your dog high willpower though.

The poultices work on the Dog, too. The Dog Biscuits are just to replace injury kits. I'm not entirely sure Injury kits don't work, either. But if you let your dog die, you're a horrible person. That's a fact.

The Mabari is broken. I love him. He tears enemies to shreds.

Overpower is overpowered. Sick him on a mage, and the mage is history. :)

His growl bit will stun everything around him.

Nemesis makes him unstoppable.

He's a combat beast.

Plus, having him find you items is great. You get gifts, set pieces, and plenty of cash.

And he's smarter than Alistair. :P

I brought him along to the Dalish in my first runthrough. He immediately confirmed my suspicions that Zarthian was up to something no good. I just wonder why Dog never warned me about Morrigan. Probably because she makes the Mabari crunch he's so fond of.

The dog is also really useful against big enemies like dragons or ogres. He doesn't get knocked back/around, he just falls down, so he can deal damage a lot more continuously. I'm not sure if weapon effects work on his teeth, though, since the only one I had was TK weapon.
