Has anyone used Dog for most of a play through?

There really needs to be a mod or something that buffs the dog up.

Apparently when you have dog in your party and go up to a landmark, your entire party will receive some benefits while in that area.

There are a few scenes where people specifically comment on the dog.
While he's not a tank, he's an okay damage dealer. The problem is that he has no other skills.

The reason behind Bioware limiting the party to 4 is that with more than 4 characters all requiring caring controls, the game may become too hectic. Well, the dog hardly requires any control compared to other characters. He doesn't talk, doesn't affect or be affected by party decisions and isn't gear-dependent.

But usually, in my party- given that I am an offensive tank, Dog stays with Wynne and protects her from harm. Once he gets Nemesis- he is awesome at it.
The only part that I am disappointed by was Dog's sequence in the Fade. I was expecting dog to be with my clone, enjoying life and I'd have to convince him that I was his real owner. Or if stuck in a nighmare, by a corpse that he believed was mine. Instead...well...no harm- Dog more than made up for it by being a most delightful and useful NPC.

But to the topic - Dog is great so far. I'm about halfway through, I think. And overwhelm is beyond useful. I have to say it's my favorite ability. He's also the fastest character - he can close the distance between him and an enemy in half the time it takes everyone else.

Nemesis is a great skill as well. He is not a tank, and shouldn't be played as one. He is mostly a support/DPS tool. If you have problems with Archers, Mages, and Rogues, bring the Mabri with you. Overwhelm them, and they go down in seconds flat.

I've found his pounce and rake(?) abilities are pretty awesome. He was one of my favorite party members for those, especially since if I have all the aggro (I went and played a Tanker), he'll pin down and rape one of the enemies with pounce.

HA! this is where I am an expert. Your Mabri is a GREAT companion to have with you. He can find items for you, and he does great damage. Keep his STR, DEX, and CON up. Also add some Willpower in there for his increase in stamina. When he gets a high enough level, unlock his Overwhelm ability. Works on human bosses and them yellow threats. His Dread Howel works wonders when you are surrounded. In some fights with Mages, I will bring my Mabri, cause there is no chance for them to stand up after my Mabri Overwhelms them. There is a reason it costs a minute to cooldown.

All of this intrigues me. I may try him next time.

Those interactions between Dog and other party members in the party camp were very interesting at the start, and I was rather disappointed when they stopped. There should have been more! More interactions! Not only with party members either, dog should have interacted with faction emissaries and Sandal.
I agree - I wish there were several more camp interactions ith Dog and the party members. I never got ones with Zevran, Oghren and Shale either.

I love Dog, but he lacks a real backstory, so he doesn't get as much development. I'll bring him along to see what his interjections are - he has a good sense of whom I should kill and whom I should let live.
good point ... i have noticed anyone you may end up actually fighting he will start growling at (demons especially).
as for back story i honestly can't help but wonder about the kid he "finds" in denerim and whether there is more to that that no one has unlocked yet

Overpower is overpowered. Sick him on a mage, and the mage is history.
His growl bit will stun everything around him.
Nemesis makes him unstoppable.
He's a combat beast.
Plus, having him find you items is great. You get gifts, set pieces, and plenty of cash.
And he's smarter than Alistair.

I brought him along to the Dalish in my first runthrough. He immediately confirmed my suspicions that Zarthian was up to something no good. I just wonder why Dog never warned me about Morrigan. Probably because she makes the Mabari crunch he's so fond of.
