I feel a bit sorry for him...When i go to my camp he's lying on the ground, waiving his tail. Why did they only allow us to take 3 more members in a party?
Thats the draw back with Bioware games isnt it!
You always want more in group to hear and see the banter back and forth!
I marked out so much when Morrigan and Lelianna started argueing over me in their suggestive tones! Was awsome!
As for giveing gives when over 100, that might be true but at some point they stop accepting completely. I had 2 extra sets of those cut screne flowers for Lelianna and she simply wouldnt accept them or any other gift eventually, her influence was maxed out as high as it could go.
but I agree, for a 4 person group, there really just no room for dog. If game had gone 6 person groups, I might have found room (on a replay for sure if nothing else)

Use the console commands here:

to add Dog as a fifth party member, and bring him everywhere. I plan on doing this in my next playthrough, because I didn't use him at all in my first one.

He isn't a great tanker, and doesn't deal wonderful damage, but he has a high rate of fire that rapes low-armored opponents and the AoE stun of Dread Howl is HUGE, espiecially early game.

Another upside to that AoE stun - this means that large mobs that usually mean death for a rogue character to wade through become backstab all-you-can-stab buffets, especially when they have Coup-de-Grace.

But despite this, I'm disappointed. They promised a full-fleged party member, which I cannot see him as. He never says or does anything except in the handful of "conversations" at camp -- doesn't even growl at suspicious people or someone threatening his owner. He was oddly absent in situations like the Joining, when waking up at Flemeth's hut or when the PC has nightmares -- all missed opportunities for him to show worry, protectiveness and happiness when the PC wakes up okay. He has never started an interaction with my character, and no one seems to include him in conversations either except for the cook and Iona in the human noble origin. The Fade sequence was indeed a huge letdown, I was expecting him stuck in a nightmare with the PC dying, or as has been said, maybe in a happy dream where you need to convince him you're his real owner and not the demon-illusion posing as the PC.
Plus, the few kaddis patters I've managed to find were all quite bland in looks and effect both, and in case of three patterns at vendors, very expensive for the amount of money you have in the beginning. And his lack of skills and scarcity of talents is a bit sad too. IMO he should get Survival at least, that'd be a perfect fit for him.

I'm using him in my first group for RP reasons (human noble warrior for whom he's the only link to her past), and I do find him both useful and adorable. He can rush up to a group of archers, Dread Howl them, then Overbear one and from there he tears them apart without my input while I micromanage the rest of my party who deals with the rest of the enemies.

if you have him with you when you encounter "kitty", he growls menacingly.

He does have a good number of interjections. I remember he did not like Zarthian at all when you first speak with him. It tipped me off regarding Zarthian's less-than-lawful-good nature.

I'm curious, what is the dog's dream in the Fade sequence?
There is nothing. You see him twitching in his sleep, you poke him awake, done.
