Has anyone used Dog for most of a play through?

I really don't like to use the dog for a party member, just because I am a DPS Warrior. Hes useful, but to a dual wielding warrior theres more needed members. If the dog were to always follow you without taking a party slot, then hell yeah I'd spend gold on him.

Did anyone else name their dog Boo? I didn't have to think when the naming screen came up.

I used him the entire first playthrough on my human noble warrior, when it was possible (95% of the time). Is he the best warrior? Definitely not - Shale is a stronger choice by far if you are looking for the non-human angle. However, he is fun and has some pretty nice talents, like Dread Howl and Overwhelm, and he does decent enough damage. Still, I mostly did it for a challenge and because I like his personality (usually quiet and intelligent).

Thats the draw back with Bioware games isnt it!

You always want more in group to hear and see the banter back and forth!
I marked out so much when Morrigan and Lelianna started argueing over me in their suggestive tones! Was awsome!

As for giveing gives when over 100, that might be true but at some point they stop accepting completely. I had 2 extra sets of those cut screne flowers for Lelianna and she simply wouldnt accept them or any other gift eventually, her influence was maxed out as high as it could go.

but I agree, for a 4 person group, there really just no room for dog. If game had gone 6 person groups, I might have found room (on a replay for sure if nothing else)

Easy answer(for how to work him into your party) on the pc:

Use the console commands here:

http://social.biowar.../47/index/84152

to add Dog as a fifth party member, and bring him everywhere.   I plan on doing this in my next playthrough, because I didn't use him at all in my first one.

I use him in nearly all the playthroughs. Dreadhowl, overwhelm, and charge are very cool. The coolest thing though is that he always takes your side for RP purposes. He never complains about killing people or not helping someone.

I've used the dog, basically as an Archer/Mage hunter. His insane speed and rather high magic resistance means he typically gets there after maybe one spell, then Dread Howl -> Scratch -> Charge -> dead mage.

He isn't a great tanker, and doesn't deal wonderful damage, but he has a high rate of fire that rapes low-armored opponents and the AoE stun of Dread Howl is HUGE, espiecially early game.

my wardog is freaking awesome. each time he levels, i dump the points into constitution and strength. hisdreadhowl does wonders when surrounded, he can outrun mobs, and i've done that during one of the mage's treasure fights. i ran around the zone, the others chased, couldn't keep up, and i was able to run back to my dead party members where they woke up, healed, and then got on with the rest of what was left.

Dog is awesome but is hard to fit into many of my groups. It can't heal. It can't tank; well it can try but I would pull aggro very quickly. It's DPS is not as good as a real damage spec. It's fairly well rounded but that usually doesn't work so well. If it could be more specialized I think it'd be more useful.

after reading the calling i really wanted to keep my dog in the party but he's not as good as another slot. BUT if you don't mind a little cheating you can have all party members at the same time or any number of variations. so for mine i just added the dog in for story telling purposes. (You can find out how in any in-game console faqs)

As mentioned before, he's an excellent mage hunter. Also, he has excellent crowd-control capabilities with his AoE stun.

Another upside to that AoE stun - this means that large mobs that usually mean death for a rogue character to wade through become backstab all-you-can-stab buffets, especially when they have Coup-de-Grace.

I'm using him in my first group for RP reasons (human noble warrior for whom he's the only link to her past), and I do find him both useful and adorable. He can rush up to a group of archers, Dread Howl them, then Overbear one and from there he tears them apart without my input while I micromanage the rest of my party who deals with the rest of the enemies.

But despite this, I'm disappointed. They promised a full-fleged party member, which I cannot see him as. He never says or does anything except in the handful of "conversations" at camp -- doesn't even growl at suspicious people or someone threatening his owner. He was oddly absent in situations like the Joining, when waking up at Flemeth's hut or when the PC has nightmares -- all missed opportunities for him to show worry, protectiveness and happiness when the PC wakes up okay. He has never started an interaction with my character, and no one seems to include him in conversations either except for the cook and Iona in the human noble origin. The Fade sequence was indeed a huge letdown, I was expecting him stuck in a nightmare with the PC dying, or as has been said, maybe in a happy dream where you need to convince him you're his real owner and not the demon-illusion posing as the PC.

Plus, the few kaddis patters I've managed to find were all quite bland in looks and effect both, and in case of three patterns at vendors, very expensive for the amount of money you have in the beginning. And his lack of skills and scarcity of talents is a bit sad too. IMO he should get Survival at least, that'd be a perfect fit for him.

Personally I can not wait for the mod that allows your dog to come along and you can still have three other party members....

Yeah, the Mabari should have been a pet like the ranger summons, that would have been really sweet.

He's a beast early on, before anyone else gets any abilities or gear. He just scales poorly.

Oh, but the Dog STARTS with an AOE stun! And after being hit by Overpower a few times, it felt good to do it to someone else.

He does have a good number of interjections. I remember he did not like Zarthian at all when you first speak with him. It tipped me off regarding Zarthian's less-than-lawful-good nature.

I'm curious, what is the dog's dream in the Fade sequence? I was also wondering what the Guardian at the temple of Andraste's ashes had to say to him too...

There is nothing. You see him twitching in his sleep, you poke him awake, done.

I used dog for my entire human mage playthrough. He was excellent, managed to win us fights that not even my nuking or Alistair's tanking could do. So, Dog FTW!
