About 6 months ago I posted how I got random crashes in Dragon Age ever since I upgraded to 1.04 (I never had issues before that).

I got Awakening recently and kinda hoped that it would solve the issue, since the Awakening box does say it supports windows 7.
I was thouroughly disappointed when I started up the game, got my character in it and the game crashed in the first fight a mage participated in.

Like I said earlier, I'm pretty much a technophobe.
What's the best way to downgrade (to 1.00 or 1.02) but keep my saves?

1.04 obviously is still wrecking the game.

Uninstall and then reinstall and patch to 1.02 you will be prompted on uninstall if you wish to keep your save files.

Save files are located in C:\\Documents and Settings\\User\\My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\Characters they can be copied and pasted; though a much better approach would be to solve the problem, considering the substantial fixes BioWare made in their patches. If you are interested in solving the problem, please list your PC specs and some of the issues your having.

I did that 6 months ago.
I played 1.00, no mods. Finished the game twice. No problem whatsoever.

Wanted to play the Leliana DLC, so decided to jump to 1.04 immediately.
Downloaded, played through the DLC fine.
Started a new game with a mage and got random crashes when casting certain spells, or when my other characters encountered mage enemies or something.

Operating System: Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
AMD Athlon II X4 630 processor (quad core 2.8GHz)
8GB DDR3 RAM
Asus EAH5750 FORMULA/2DI/1GD5 (Radeon HD5750)

For now I'm playing 1.03 and haven't had any issues so far.

The error report I received was (quoted from my other topic)

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: DAOrigins.exe

I do hope it gets solved. I downloaded Witch Hunt since it said it would need 1.1 on Awakening...and I didn't know it also needed 1.04 of Origins...

Also, my other computer has the same issue

That one has the following specs:

Operating System: Windows 7 home edition 64 bit
AMD Athlon II X3 440 processor (3GHz)
4GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Radeon HD5770 (1GB GDDR5)

It sounds like a CPU overload or a multi-core problem, try disabling anti-aliasing. If that doesn't work go to the shortcut properties and add without quotes "-singlecore" to the target line. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, would you list your CPU?

What exactly changed between 1.00 and 1.04 that would go from doing nothing to a CPU overload?
After all, I tested 1.00 with the reinstall a few days ago first and it worked fine. I got problems again when upgrading to 1.03.
And I already tried the single core thing last time.

Also, I almost never enable anti-aliasing. It's turned off by default and I kept it that way.

Like I said, I had 0 problems when playing 1.00. The problems started when I upgraded to 1.04
1.03 also gives these random crashes by the way. So I guess I won't be able to play Awakenings...

APPCRASH from what i've learned from other people has something to do with interfering programs running in the background. Theres a ton of references to it on these forums try a google search and it might give you some clues as to why it's happening.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 may help you work it out it even includes a little app you can run to try and sort problems automatically.

I tried playing turning absolutely everything off but the game and it had no difference.

For now (Using singlecore AND priority set to realtime) I've played through the start of Wynn's quest (Vessel appearance) and Soldier's Peak without issues. Which is a better start compared to 6 months ago.

I already played through the Mages tower with 1.00 with this character, So I can't really test that yet. Will post later when/if I receive problems again.

Thanks for the help.
