Could both Ashley and Kaiden still be alive?

While starting up a new game of ME2 recently, I noticed that in the savegame import screen the tab you click on that shows which character died on Virmire says "Missing in Action."  That got me thinking -- we never actually see Kaiden or Ashley get killed.  It's assumed.  Things happen, especially in sci-fi stories.  I have this image in my mind of ME3 opening with Shepard going back to the Alliance, getting a new ship, and receiving the surprise of findout that both Kaiden and Ashley on board.

For practical reasons it would make sense for Bioware to do this.  Most of us probably want to have the surviving Virmire character back as part of the crew in ME3.  I think it's necessary, especially for anyone who wants to follow through with the romance from ME1.  But that means writing and recording all of that dialogue for two characters when only one can actually be in the game.  The easiest thing to do is to bring them both back.  Do you think that would be a cop-out?  Do you think it's possible this may happen?

Sure, it's possible. I really hope it isn't the case though.

Well if that asari Rana survived, why not?

But I'd prefer that not happen also.

I dont think the "missing in action" person will be back and the term itself is put there because it sounds better than "the person you left in a nuclear fireball". I'm also pretty sure that if you actually click the "missing in action" it will say that " (whoever you left) was killed on Virmire".

Leaning against a nuke surrounded by enemy forces two seconds before it blows up.

If Shep can be ressurected after being dead for two years, anything's possible.

But I think death has been cheapened enough already.

That would be retarded... as much I like the VS... talk about making even more of our decisions not matter. =/

Next thing you know, everyone who "died" during the SM would be magically back alive b/c the space wizard did it. lolz

Not necessarily....you could have chosen to save the one guarding the bomb, leaving the one with the salarians to die.

Is is totally possible. I had the same thought when I saw them listed as "MIA" and not "KIA" on the import screen. I also kind of hope it doesn't happen, though.

You think whether or not they are alive depends on which location you saved the other one from?

And that would force players who would want that person survive to go back and replay their games for a different savegame. I don't think that's what any game developer would aim for.

That person You left is dead.

Just pointing out that they aren't necessarily left by the bomb.

See my other post for what I think about the whole both being alive thing. sheesh.

I always save the person with the bomb. Its more prudent to make sure the thing goes off.

That said I thought it was pretty facepalm worthy that Rana survived. Ash/Kaidan being alive too wouldn't be that much of a stretch.

I really hope that they're dead. Not because I disliked them, in fact, the decision tears my heart out every time I play it, but because that would cheapen the whole episode in the game and make the replay value less in my mind. If they don't really die, who cares who you leave behind?

Kaidan/Ashley pretty much were literally sitting on nuke so I really can't see how he/she survived that.

Yeah... they were... right next to a nuke. I really, really wouldn't forgive the writers for that kind of stunt.

But you gotta agree, you do want the VS on your team in the Third game.

Oh, yeah, I'd get behind that. So long as it's the VS, not the VD (Virmire Dead).

Ah yes, "Death". We have dismissed that claim.

You sir, have won the position of runner-up for winner of the internet. The grand winner was the man who posted a picture of a fully probed Uranus.

I certainly hope not, it would nullify one of the most serious decisions in ME1.
