Rana had a head start though, so its less cringe worthy for her to have survived.
I would have loved it if both Ash and Kaidan could have survived, but its just impossible. a cameo would have been lovely though, something like a more detailed flashback then Normandy crash site?
Could both Ashley and Kaiden still be alive?

Bioware could do whatever they want with the story of course, but it would be really bad from a storytelling point of view to bring back the squadmate that 'died' on Virmire. It makes Shepard's choice at that point in the game completely pointless for starters, and it would make Shepard's enemies seem less threatening. After all if you bring back the Virmire casualty it would be possible at the end of ME2 to not have lost a single squadmate through two games. It would also be impossible to suspend disbelief, since for some Ash or Kaiden was practically on top of the nuke shortly before it detonated. There is no way they'd be able to escape in time.
Thankfully I think the Virmire Casualty is permanently dead. If I'm not mistaken someone from Bioware stated that back when some were debating whether or not the person left behind on Virmire would make a reappearance in ME2.

Sure, it's possible. I really hope it isn't the case though.
I don't really think it's possible and I wouldn't want that anyway. As much as I love them both it would feel cheap, like the weight of my decision on Virmire doesn't matter much the same as some of the other decisions didn't even carry over to ME2. I would feel like it's simply BioWare being lazy.

If they don't have a body, they never put KIA.outlaworacle wrote...
Is is totally possible. I had the same thought when I saw them listed as "MIA" and not "KIA" on the import screen. I also kind of hope it doesn't happen, though.
MIA doesn't mean 'might be alive.' It really means 'can't find enough to put into a thimble.'

No. They are dead and gone. The devs killed this idea long ago before the Bioware Social network forums existed. Whoever you left behind is absolutely completely dead and done for.

If a body isn't recovered during an operation, they are listed as MIA. happened when shepard was killed on the first normandy too. and considering that the last time I saw Kaidan he was wounded, surrounded by geth, and propped against the nuke that went off not much later, I'd say he died.

At the Baker Crossroads nuclear experiment in 1946, they detonated just a 23 kiloton bomb below the surface of the water. The explosion completely vaporized a full sized scrap battleship which was floating just above the bomb. Leaning against a bomb whos explosion you can see from space, means ashley or kaiden are very very very dead haha

Maybe who ever was left behind tried to do the ol'quake trick of rocket jumping. Well more like nuke jumping in this case. Was alot of water around for the "soft" landing, an arm there, a leg there =)
