If this question has already been answered, I apologize deeply and will delete this topic post haste. But, on the off chance that it hasn't (and I swear I looked through the forums to see if I could find something related, all I found was Loghain take two but that has little to do with my question) here is my question:

What reason do you think Loghain has to let Cailan get killed? Power seems like the easiest answer but also seems a bit far-fetched if he wanted that he could have killed maric and taken the throne for himself at any opportunity. He thought Cailan was a threat to Ferelden? I admit Cailan seems a bit glory hungry from the vids but he is also quite young and would have probably flourished under guidance and become a better king.

Any one have any insight on this? I just love to speculate :P

Yeah..I have idea..Loghain thought he will be able to "regin" behind a throne, becouse Cailan married his doughter. Cailan try to be King, and try to discuss with Loghain. Also Cailan's dreams about glory are little childish and may be a dangerous for Ferdelen. So I think, that for "greater good" Loghain will accept Cailan's death. Also I think, that he want a power..at last he is this one who

SPOILER

hired assassin to kill Alistair who is Maric's bastard, and can be another King

END OF SPOILER

It seems Loghain also very much dislikes the Grey Wardens, and possibly fears their influence. Loghain's daughter is described as the 'real' power behind the throne (wiki), so he might fear the Grey Wardens will get too powerful with Cailan's sponsorship/support.

You are probably right Sabriana about Grey Wardens. Anyway it's really nice to see that at last in DA:O ours opponent is strong, inteligent and really dangerous man

Yes, I agree with you Ines, It's nice to see it, and in more ways than one. I hope the game gives me more of those smart enemies. I would love to see opponents that will try to get into my PC-girl's head instead of mindlessly attacking. Brain doesn't have to be vs. brawn, they could work well together.

You know, opponents that have great arguments, making my PC having to make very tough choices.

Yes, but if his only argument is Cailan wasn't a great king it's still a pretty horrible move to cause the death of your best friend's son :(

Well, in his mind it might just be that he has to chose between the one and the many. His intentions could've been honorable in his mind.

Like Dante said, the way to hell is paved with good intentions.

Actually, he couldn't have. There's no indication that Loghian would have a chance at the throne. He might be famous, but there are many banns and arls of noble blood who'd have a better claim to the throne than he. Including the Couslands.

Ah sorry, I wasn't sure about that. I read the book and the Orlessian occupant pretty much grabbed the throne because he killed the last king (not himself of course) and had a huge army at his back. Of course Loghain probably wouldn't have had the army at his back :P

His daughter is the queen and he is perhaps the third most powerful man in Ferelden, not to mention he is the king's advisor.  I'd say he has a pretty good chance.

His daughter is queen by marriage, not blood, which means unless she is preggers she doesn't exactly have a strong claim with out Cailan or some one else that shares Calehad's bloodline, and I'm willing to bet more than a few nobles do.

not to mention he is the king's advisor.  I'd say he has a pretty good chance.

King's adviser does not a king make, further more in order to ascend to the throne he'd either have to knock off his daughter or marry her, not mention contend with a whole bunch of nobles who more than likely have a stronger claim to the throne. Loghain is after all just a peasant upstart with no pedigree when you get right down to it.

One thing is though, blood does not determine who is king or queen in fereldan, it strengthens your claim, sure, but at the end of the day, the nobles elect the king at the landsmeet.

I still hope we can side with Loghain...since *SPOILERS*

The CC and the Strategy guide says he can side with us.

True, the nobles could even elect an elf pimp as king if they wanted to but it's not likely to happen. The aristocracy has a tendency to support one of their own, and I'm willing to bet a whole bunch of them don't see Loghain as one of "us".

*spoilers*

Given that he seemingly leaves the king and wardens for dead at Ostagar and will likely pin the blame on the PC, I look foward to sticking his head on a pike, hopefully we'll also be able to kill his daughter.

I dunno, my male noble berserker might like to marry her and be king himself.  As long as he still gets to punch darkspawn in the gibblets.

I was thinking more along the lines of killing her just to spite Loghain before you do him in next. Besides with both of them gone, you're suddenly the highest ranked noble in the country any ways, it's win-win.

That's all a bit bloodthirsty isn't it?  I'd rather have an experienced queen run the country while I was out dicing darkspawn after raiding the royal armory for the best armor and weapons, then get to come home to my castle and royal banquet hall.  Can't be genociding darkspawn if you have to actually run a country, now can you?  Image IPB

Kind of the point, they'll know not to get up in the PC's business after he has Anora hung with own her entrails and makes Loghain watch before giving him the good ol' head on pike special.

No but you can organise the genociding of the darkspawn and watch from the side-lines while having a pint of ale. Putting your life at risk? Pfft... that's what peons are for.

You know you made it when you can get others to risk their miserable hides for youImage IPB

Now wheres the fun in that?  "Oh hi, I just spent a significant portion of my life finding mystical war items and training to kick ass, but I'll let the peons go kill things while I get drunk!"  C'mon!  If I'm not punching someone in the mouth, it's because I'm looking for someone to punch in the mouth.  And then possibly behead if they're worth it.  With my very large sword. It ain't the killin that's fun, it's the fightin!
