You are already a mage so having both Morrigan (the best tank in game) and Wynne (the best healer in game) might not be ideal for a first time because mages tend to need lots of micromanagement. I suggest you drop one of them and carry the dog instead but it is your game and you can certainly win with any party that you enjoy playing.
p.s.
Despite what some people say about him dog IS a fully functional DPS companion through-out the game.

I might be insulting your intelligence, but you know that when you recruit followers, they still stay on your team even though you can only have three companions with you on a mission? The others are in your party camp. So feel free to experiment on your favorite line-up. There really is no "must have" line-up, it's in your preferred play style. Though it helps to have a rogue with you to pick locks and disarm traps.
This.
You'll get more companions as you go so deciding who to take with you on missions will be a mix-and-match affair. They all fight differently and and individual personalities, so it's more a matter of working out who you like and who works well together rather than 'upgrading' and keeping the 'best' companions. I like to mix them up as much as possible just to I feel I get to know them all.

You (should) keep at least one rogue who can lock pick. The Dog is a melée fighter and very strong early in the game. Mage builds can very greatly, but for the most part they can all act as deadly ranged combattants. Having two mages in your party can be very powerful, even too powerful for my taste.

Also, you can set up Mage tactics so you don't have to micromanage. Set tactics to unload all single target attacks in the order you want, probably starting with Vulnerability Hex.
Given the title of this thread and your handle, perhaps your best choice is the Warden?!

I didn't quite get the joke, but I did laugh about the idea of leaving the Warden behind. THAT actually would make for an interesting twist if there was a quest or two when your main character (can't) come along!
There is indeed such a quest.
P.s.
Let dog do all the talking... wow what an actor!

That quest is so funny if you get oghren and zev to do the rescue
Sold! As much as my ego wants to my little group of four to slaughter Howe's entire army, that quest looks entertaining as hell.

It can even be profitable; both economically as gold and XP, as well as emotionally fullfilling when you get to fight Ser Cauthrian twice. Just kill her the first time, then get Captured (killed) by the remaining troops; both of you recover, and she gets her matching sword off the wall display for your next encounter!

Love that pairing, but there are many delightful combos. This quest is one best Hard Saved for multiple plays. Plus your ring from Morrigan sees some In Game usage finally.

The advantage of having one character over another join you (apart from the damage they do) is that they all have different opinions about the choices you make in the game and receive stat/ item benefits from liking you or suffer negatives if they don't. If you ****** them off enough they will leave or in extreme cases even attack you!
A good example of this would be the two mages... Morrigan & Wynne are polar opposite and having both of them in your party will almost always result in one of them getting upset with you, possibly both!
