So I see this everytime and I don't think a lot (if any) people have noticed it.

When taking the first elevator (I think) where the squad is ambushed by a Krogan Battlemaster and two mercs, Shepard uses his elbow to activate the elevator in a short cut-scene. Im bothered by this because the switch is actually a button, a holographic button like the holographic keyboards very common everywhere you go. The thing is that the codex says that to use these holographic objects the user must have special gloves with some kind of activator on the finger tips or have these activators surgically implanted in the person's finger tips beneath the skin.

Here is the codex entry taken from the Mass Effect wiki:

Computers: Haptic Adaptive Interface

Advances in computing have done away with traditional input devices like keyboards. Instead, modern input peripherals are usually holographically displayed in front of the user at a height and angle for ergonomic ease. Machines that use this interface detect a user through a microframe chip in the user's glove that "keys in" to the computer. Once a user is accepted, motion accelerometers in the user's gloves match his hands' location with that of a proportionate but smaller "mirror" set of controls inside the computer itself. As the user presses against the holographic field, force-feedback in the glove kicks in, giving a slight resistance. A person can feel his way through using a touch-screen that isn't actually there. A simple toggle switch on the back of the hands allows the glove to be turned off when not in use.
Haptic interfaces have become so common that some individuals undergo cybernetic enhancement surgery to have the accelerometers implanted in their fingertips. "Going bareskin" is the sign of a committed computer user who no longer has to fuss with putting on gloves or cleaning them with alcohol wipes to get rid of the clammy-hand smell.

Now I would like an explanation on how Shepard activavates the elevator with his elbow (which I doubt has an accelerometer or wathever it's called. Please nobody use the Lazarus Project as an escapegoat. I doubt he has these activator all over his body (the elbow? wut!?).

Inconsistency is the keyword for this thread.

Sometimes the writers forget to read their own codex. Not a big deal, IMO, but still pretty sloppy.

Nah, Shep's so awesome that he had a haptic interface implant installed in his elbow just so he could randomly elbow menus.

"Hmm, I'll have the potatoes au *elbows menu* gratin!

Seems like an awful gap to oversee if even a single gamer [me] notices it. Sloppy, sloppy BW.....

Maybe because elevators use different technology? If that is an elevator in a reasonably public place then, maybe, the designers included a real button to allow non-implanted people to use the elevator as well? Notice that the codex article is

Computers: Haptic Adaptive Interface

and not

Elevators (and other switches): Haptic Adaptive Interface

I at least brought evidence. Where's yours?

Or just maybe Shepard's armour has sensors for interfacing built into the joints so when you carrying a big gun around and its easier to use something other than your hands you can... But you're right it is much easier to make it into a big mistake when a simple explanation shoots the theory down... :)

It just makes me sick that a video game company could be so sloppy!

By the way how do I add a banner to the bottom of my posts? Like for example the paragade banner?

Shepard hits the button with their fist, not their elbow.

I always tell myself this when I see him do it. But he does the same thing with Grunt's tank when giving "birth" to him. Without gloves! So Shepard has the activators implanted.

No, he makes a valid point. It seems ridiculous to think everyone has to be wearing gloves just to manipulate an button.

Or how about a fan base that keeps replaying the game, I know I do.

Who cares... is an interface..

Who is to say holograms dont react like buttons?... little kinetic barriers with holograms make it work.

Like having a glass keyboard... only instead of glass is a kinetic field placed by tiny emitters. just like in pinnacle station it can be done in big ways.

Why not. Personally I dont like punching holograms. I would like to feel something against my fingers when I press the elevator button.

I at least brought evidence. Where's yours?

I do not have to provide evidence to discredit every silly theory people come up with here. You claim that there is a huge contradiction but all the "evidence" supporting this claim is the fact that there is an elevator that doesn't use the Haptic Adaptive Interface.

Edit: Somewhat related:

If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is an intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense

Is this really a "Huge" contradiction. It's a small slip-up that really doesn't make that big of a deal. People make mistakes, even BioWare. And at the end of the day does it really matter that they made a mistake in how Shepard opens a door?

These contradictions are all over the place, really. Just compare Thane's story on Drell race with the Codex - a shocking inconsistency. Or thermal clips. Or Ardat-Yakshi stuff. ME2 Codex is a total mess.

As alex said, it isn't a contradiction. Unless for some reason it was a secure elevator (in which case shep would have had to have hacked it anyway), there is no reason a simple 'summon elevator' button should need any such special interface.

It isn't a 'computer', it is just a simple elevator button.

^It's still a hologram, which you need an activator. Contradiction or not, it's still wrong.

Miranda punches one in the lift on her loyalty mission. I can't remember exactly though which part of her hand, apart from the knuckles touch it. At any rate the force speeds the lift up.

Well uses her omni tool just checked. I thought she punched it.
