Although achievements are not by any means a particularly important thing as far as games go, I am personally hoping that Mass Effect 3 does not include yet another achievement for romancing a team member.

Those who don't want a LI are encouraged to have one.

For those who chose Liara or Kaiden/Ashley in Mass Effect as a LI they are now encouraged to pick sombody new for Mass Effect 2.

I'd like to see this pattern broken for Mass Effect 3 so we can make our own decisions based upon our characters rather than being gently pushed towards making decisions that we do not want to.

Does anybody else agree?

If achievements do not bother you at all then please don't shoot down the suggestion purely because of it because it's not exactly a difficult request, and secondly it wouldn't affect you either way. ;)

EDIT: I should probably add, before everyone gets defensive that I am not "demanding" that Bioware change their achievements or anything like that, simply that I dislike the way the game encourages you to "cheat" on your LI or to have one where you may not want one at all and that I think it'd be a good idea to avoid it.

Achievements, as mentioned in the first sentence, are not exactly important, but I still stand by my suggestion.

Achievements don't bother me particularly as a gamer. But I don't know what the romance options will be for ME3. But I would like to stick with Garrus, and maybe there will be an achievement for a continued relationship? Or perhaps the paramour achiement will expand to include developing? relationships with LI's?

Hmm, I disagree, it's up to you to figure out whether an achievement is worth "cheating" on your LI or not. And also, if we start removing achievements cause they push people to do things they wouldn't do otherwise, we defeat the whole point of achievements. Should we remove difficulty achievements cause they force people to play in a higher difficulty they don't enjoy as much ? should we remove class specific achievements cause they force players to pick a class over another class they would prefer ?, etc.

I'm confident there will be brand new love interests in ME3 one way or another. Don't forget ME3 is going to be a new game, not an expansion pack.

I understand your point, but to a certain extent I'd say yes, when it comes to RPG's at least.

Or Microsoft/Sony could just make achievements optional so us people with slight OCD tendencies don't get annoyed that their game isn't "100% complete". =]

I am sure there will, and that's why I don't want yet another paramour achievement.

Unless it's called "You should start charging them by the hour" or something.

True. But I think it will be huge challenge to make LI's as good as Garrus, Thane and Tali Posted Image.
I'll be staying loyal to my ME2 romance anyway. Watching the rejection videos made me stick to that one!

It wouldn't surprise me to see new love interests in ME3. There's bound to be new crewmembers (much to my chagrin...), so why not be able to romance them? I also imagine there will be an achievement for "monogamy" or something like that, where you remain faithful to your ME1 romance throughout all three chapters of the game.

I hope all LIs will return in ME3, so "stayed loyal to photo frame" won't be needed.
For ME2 I'd like to see "loyal" and "paramour" achievements, but what was done...
Edit: speaking about "monogamy", it should consider only one LI in all series, no matter ME1 LI or ME2 LI

Good point, maybe "monogamy" wasn't the right word for what I was trying to convey.  Sticking with your ME1 LI and not taking an ME2 LI (and then of course re-kindling said romance in ME3/DLC) is more what I meant.

honestly, I've always viewed achievements as something entirely optional and I'm not going to change how I enjoy playing my games just to get points that are used for..what exactly? aside from couple of achievements (weapon/power achievements in ME1 transferring to each subsequent playthrough, getting bonus minerals/credits after passing the game at least once in ME2) they really are something you don't have to pursue. So what if some of your achievement medals remain grayed out? I'm never getting a medal for passing the game on insanity either, but I'm not going to ask Bioware to remove it.

I don't recall saying that you shouldn't have new LI's, simply that they shouldn't keep adding achievements for romancing them as it encourages you to not be faithful to your previous one or to pick one where you may not even want one.

You're right, it's a new game, but it's also part of a trilogy... there aren't many new entries in the last chapter of Star Wars or of the Lord of the Rings, right? I think that most of fans who romanced a character in ME prefers to continue their actual lovestories (damn... there're a lot of people that remained loyal to ME1's LIs, even with the s***y treatment they got in ME2 before LotSB) than just have a new bunch of fu**able characters. But also a pair of new LI won't hurt nobody and will let who play a JamesBondish Shepard to share his/her bed with someone different in every chapter of the story.

And if have to have only a photo of my actual LI... geez, I'll rampage. I admire the patience of who remained loyal to the ME1's romances.

OP: It's called "replay value." They're tricking you into making multiple saves.

I know because they get me every time.

Alpha Protocol (which, despite all of its aspirations, ended up being Mass Effect: Splinter Cell Edition) had an achievement for NOT hooking up with anyone during the course of the game. Then again, it also had one for bedding EVERYONE the game allowed to bed in one playthrough, but still, the argument stands - it's not unheard of =)

True. They do something similar with Fallout games. In Fallout 3 they asked you to get to level 30 with all three karma levels (Good, Neutral, Evil) and in Fallout New Vegas they asked you to do all three endings.

The problem is that if you are going for the achievements then you tend to just save before they branch off and get the achievments then carry on playing as normal.

For example in New Vegas I saved before the final mission. Did two of the endings I didn't want, then carried on playing as normal and did the one I wanted.

It's not the way they intend you to play the game, but I don't really fancy playing through a game that can last 100+ hours three times just to get the achievements when I can do it this way.

Obviously this says more about me than them as achievements are optional, but I like 100%ing my favourite games, and dislike it when they make you have to do stupid things to do so.

IIRC, New Vegas has four endings. House, NCR, Caesar and Yes-Man.

The stupid things are subjective, some people LIKE being challenged to do said stupid things, doubly so if they aren't as stupid-looking afterwards. Remember how Dead Space handled the semi-challenging "complete the game with just the Plasma Cutter" task? Exceptionally well, it made the game MORE FUN, doubly so in the second one.
