Talk about a comprehension fail.

Do you know what the word "casual." means?

Particularly in that statement?

I wanted to support BioWare with 2 pre-orders. I really did, just like with Mass Effect 2. But this DRM is garbage. It's Mass Effect 1 all over again.

How about YOU check "every few days" with ME if it's ok to use the money I paid for your online-DRM infected games? And if you can't reach me then they block your bank account. Sounds fantastic, no?

Well, you can kiss your Hawke behind goodbye to 2 pre-orders (mine) and 3 other (from friends). That's an instant 250$ loss. And there are thousands, if not tens of thousands other people who did the same.

Well, at least I'm going to direct my 100$ to copies of The Witcher 2 for a company who doesn't treat the customers like garbage.

BTW, Chris. You say "no need to have the disc in the drive" as if that's an advantage.

Sorry.

Anyways on the internet note didn't Egypt get locked out of the internet by their gov't. Sure such things are rare but they do happen.

There are sunset plans in place for all our titles.  Each one can be different, but most common solution is that the online requirement would be patched out.

What I never understood is that if you have plan to "sunset" the DRM, why not announce them when the game is released, why not put a time limit on the DRM ? (But seeing that Mass Effect still has it's DRM 2.6 years after release I won't hold my breath)

Peoples whould tolerate DRM more easily if they had the assurance that X months after release the DRM WILL be patched out. Not just the "we might maybe/if we fell like it/one day remove the DRM." statement that we hear too often.

I doubt this thread will change anything

Game companies are all turning to consoles

PC sales are pretty much just a bonus

Not that i care either way as long as i get to play the friggin thing

I don't have time care about every tiny aspect of DRM

Agreed.

My entire issue with DRM is the longevity of my game, not the process itself most of the time (Ubisoft and now this with the random checks excluded).

If there was a promise to remove the DRM at some point I wouldn't complain about DRM, generally.  The fact that Mass Effect still has its DRM though, years after release and after the price dropped to $5 in sales, speaks to the fact that EA is not interested in removing the DRM.

Since my gaming computer is also a private and offline system, I guess that disqualifies me from playing "Dragon Age II". Even though I was sitting on the fence in regards to purchasing "Dragon Age II", this one specific criteria has automatically pushed me over into the 'no' category.

*shrugs*

Hi Chris.

On topic: Can you tell me why the DRM outlined in the original post is being used when it will not stop piracy but will inconvienence paying customers?

Thanks.

I own two computers. When I buy a new system, I turn my old one into an internet system. Its a continuous cycle. My latest and up to date system will remain offline for at least five to six years. Since I grew up during the computer pioneer era (1980s/1990s), I am extremely cautious when it comes to personal information. Once I get a new computer to replace the current one (six years from now), I will replace the current internet computer with the one I bought a few weeks ago.

If anyone were to hack into this system, they would only find an operating system. All other information is stored on a stand-alone system. When a piece of software requires activation by phone or internet, I call into the company to obtain my activation codes.

I have been doing this for 15 years.

I'm happy to hear the DRM is going to be less draconian. I'm getting the game for 360, but I'll probably pick it up for the PC one day (as I've done for previous Bioware releases). I've found the EA accounts a little fiddley in the past so that's going to annoy some, but overall I'm glad Bioware is actively trying to make DRM more tolerable.

Other than Ubisoft's horrible always-on DRM this is the worst DRM system so far, so I don't know what you mean here.

For the people saying "well if you have an internet connection you're fine", my problem with this DRM is this:

If for some reason I'm unable to connect to the internet when I need to "verify" my copy (once every x number of days), I'll be unable to play the game. So if I have a problem with my internet provider, if my router craps out for some reason, if there's a connectivity issue with my computer, if the weather affects my connection, if the EA servers go down, if I'm travelling and unable to get online, or any other number of "if"s that affect my ability to get online, I'll be unable to play the game. Why would I want to pay for a product that I have to constantly prove my ownership of and that I will lose access to if, for reasons beyond my control, I'm unable to provide the proof despite having it?

I've enjoyed every other Bioware game I've purchased and I'd like to continue to support the devs by buying this game. But it feels like I'm waving my purse in EA's face only to be told, "no no you don't want to do that, in fact we're going to do our best to hamper your potential enjoyment of the game so you DON'T give us money!" It's just frustrating, so rather than deal with the headache I'll just buy another game that doesn't have this ridiculous policy and that I can play whenever and wherever I like.

I'm very glad I didn't pre-order DA2. When I purchased ME2 I didn't realize it would be the last Bioware game I will play. I don't understand why they keep trying to re-fight the same battles over and over again. Harsher DRM will not turn pirates into paying customers. I have no problem with a disc check, and I can tolerate one time activation, but I will not put up with being forced to go online and log on to play a single player game. I don't care if it's once every 3 days or 5 days or whatever, I am not going to prove over and over again that, yes I did purchase the game, just like the last time I confirmed it. If I'm not actively on the internet doing something, my computer is not connected to the internet and it will remain that way.
