What I'm wondering is why the retail/non-Steam versions have the recurring online checks? Why not just go with a Steam like approach where you can activate it online once but after that, you can stay offline forever, if you want?

Maybe they will, after the game has been out for a while, like Melo said. In the meantime time, it still requires you to have a steady internet connection. It's nice that they released info on DRM early, and it demonstrates Bioware's awareness of their fanbase.

And I would like everyone to note what remarkable restraint I'm showing right now...

Sounds fine. Same as Dead Space 2 and I didn't have any problems there.

Same here.

I would rather have the option of either a disk check OR periodic online verification. I have to agree with an earlier poster that this makes me feel like I am paying to borrow the game for a certain amount of time and EA gets to decide when I can no longer play my game. I need to think about this......

If you do not have an internet connection nowadays, at least every few days, you should not be playing video games.

Period.

The only reason you aren't getting mobbed by angry responses is because the people that would want to point out how ridiculous that statment is don't have a constant internet connection to be posting on the forums with.

People complaining about the case simply did not catch up with nowadays' games. Back in the times where internet was expensive, hardly available and in general, very rare, something like DRM would be bad for customers.

It's 2011 now. I can't play games with my 5 year old graphics card either. You either catch up or get lost on the way...and you will not be missed.

That's dumb.

I just spent a month without internet because my provider is a pile of garbage and I'm unable to switch to another company. And in your eyes I should just not be allowed to play video games? Believe me, if I could have constantly working, reliable broadband, I would love to! Sadly it's just not available for me, and I live in the UK.

I was looking forward to playing DA2 (I even pre-ordered for the first time in a good few years), but I think I'll pass now and cancel my pre-order. No sense in shelling out for a game I'll have nothing but frustration trying to play. :?

No disc check? Awesome. My laptop (if it'll actually play DA2) is always spitting out CDs. And that you don't have to be constantly online is wonderful; I don't mind that I have to log in at least once in a certain amount of days. And I was hoping that it would upload character stats and portraits (see page 3 if you don't know what I mean there). Thanks for clearing things up and letting us all know, BioWare. ^_^ This DRM is not at all as bad as I feared it would be.

This is ridiculous.

If the steam version only requires steam ( aka online activation ) then wouldn't a simple online activation be the retail versions equivalent???????

Why add in a bunch more restrictions for retail customers.

I bought DA2 under the assumption that it would have the same copy protection as the first, disk check only. It is THE most convenient way for the greatest number of people to be able to play the game hassle free.

Seriosuly considering cancelling my pre-order, and if ME3 has the same sort of restrictions, then I won't buy it either.

Why spit in the faces of your customers?

You realise that pirates will be the only ones without the DRM...DRM only hurts paying customers.

I bought the collectors edition of DA, the expansion, and the collectors edition of ME2 ( I even bought DLC even tough I am usually opposed to it ) and now we are being 'punished' because of people who never had any intention of buying the game.

# of pirated downloads does not = # of lost sales. Half those people would never have bought it anyway, the other half may have then gone on to buy it...

Why do this :S

Uh, you make the DRM sound so restrictive. All you have to do is log on to EA and you HAVE to do this to access DLCs anyway. It is probably the same for Steam versions too. If you want to access to DLCs you got to log on to your EA account. I don't see how this is going to hurt paying customers at all.

I believe they do it diffrent this time with DA2 DLC's. You only have to "authenticated" once,  when you install it.

Let me see if I have this straight: I have a PC and a modem connection but I'm not sure it will play DA2. If it doesn't, with no connection on my PS3, then I'm just out of luck?

I'd rather play on my PC and I have no problems with having to check in once in a while, even though I have limited GB's I'm allowed every month. I can run DAO on high settings and full screen but I'm such a retard that I don't know how to look up my specs to see if I'm okay for DA2.

I won't have to log onto the internet on my PS3?

This is for non steam PC versions of DA2. Consoles come with their own native DRM, like Melo said earlier. Steam does too. This is just a special little gift for the rest of us PC gamers.

Oh, okay. Thanks so much. I never log on while playing unless I want to upload a character. My contract isn't up until December or I'd get wifi. I was starting to get a little nervous.

Recently there has been some concern over the DRM (Digital Rights Management) included with Dragon Age 2. Hopefully this post will help clarify what the DRM is for all versions of Dragon Age 2.

Release Control (does not use securom)
Hopefully this explains the DRM included in Dragon Age 2.

If you still have questions, please ask them here.

Two Questions

You note that Release Control does not use Securom, but do not state if SecuRom is being used as DA2's DRM.
Does DA2 install SecuRom or Solidshield or some other brand of DRM? You don't state the specific DRM.

If so, will uninstalling DA2 also uninstall ALL the DRM? (Uninstalling ME1 did not uninstall SecuRom; Sony's SecuRom uninstall tool did not uninstall it either.)

On EA's Disclosure for Dead Space 2, it is noted that Solidshield Technologies is used. I mention this only in the event Solidshield Technologies DRM is used for DA2, since, according to Solidshield's website, Windows 7 is not supported.

Thank you.

Is it me, or does it look like (at least until EA or Bioware removes the DRM checks) that the Steam version if the one to get? :0

PC Retail version looks like it should defintely be avoided, especially in light of post above yours.

I see.  So you believe members of the military should not be allowed to play video games while they are on deployment.  Got it.

Steam seems the way to go really, DRM wise. Irony is of course that Steam is the only avenue that didn't get the Signature Edition.

We must learn what evil is trying to corrupt da2. Hopefully not SS.

Stop saying that broadband internet access is cheap and readily accessible to everyone; there are a lot of countries where this is not the case, and gamers in those countries have a right to complain about online activation and periodic verification of ownership.

How high is the % of total players coming from developing countries? Exactly.

You don't even need broadband internet, you can even use a modem if you find a time machine to travel back in time and buy one and you only need to connect every few days; maybe sth. like every 7 days.

Nobody said you can't complain. Hell, people complain about everything and everyone nowadays, people even complain about the weather...and can't change something about it.

You either drop the 90's "No internet activation!" attitude or you cannot play games using this kind of method...that's not rocket science.

It depends on where you live, I suppose. If you live somewhere decent you're probably sorted. Sadly for me, I live in a small-ish town with one option for internet, and that option happens to suck, so if my service cuts out again I'm SOL.

Windows 7 and Dead Space 2 work fine, don't buy into paranoia.

And on the "Steam is the way to go" front, Steam does the same thing as this DRM so I don't see why that is the case.  You have to activate to install on Steam and you can only be in offline mode for so long on Steam, same thing as this DRM.

People keep saying 'it's the same as dead space 2"

It isn't.

Dead Space 2 does not continually ask for RE-ACTIVATION. It only requires it once on install, that's it.

Mirrors Edge, RA3, Dead Space, Crysis, Bioshock 2.

All those games only require it once on install and even then it still inconveniences people with no internet/unreliable internet, repeated activation/verifiication is B.S.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure with Steam's offline mode, once you initially activate the game, you can stay in offline mode forever and ever without having to reconnect.
