and my second was limiting combat to close quarters.

Ha?

What are you talking about, there is lot more close quarters combat in ME1 then in ME2.

about the same actually, but that has more to do with how the engine was originally designed (gears of war's combat system) than anything.

the cover mechanics/level design have changed in me2 so that an open-stance crouch mechanic would be completely redundant - there's simply nowhere useful you could use it.

Perhaps. Then I should elaborate further and say that I had an issue with combat in general ME2. Specifically the fact that the new combat system was so heavily reliant on a cover system. That and that enemy AI hit you 99-100% percent of the time whenever you are out of cover. (partially because the cover to cover animations have Shepard standing out like a sore thumb) Even at intermediate ranges they are extremely accurate. It still think that Bioware should not stick to ME2 combat system and still work to perfect it in ME3. It worked well for GTA 4. (I couldn't stand the GTA 3 era combat)

i think part of the reason they got rid was 'cause you could crouch in such a position behind cover that you could shoot enemies, but they couldn't shoot you.

If that was their reason they really need to play other games. Does that happen or is that unfair to the AI in 90% of games that have crouch? No

Crouch has its uses or it wouldn't be there but claiming it's overpowered? Come on Bioware

With the cover system in ME3 looking much improved I don't think it's really necessary. Though I wouldn't mind it being in there too.

With the tweaked gameplay, its about as necessary as you ressurecting this thread from the graveyard.

In other words, no.
