...because someone said it was funny to hear Alistair convince you to try and keep her at the second attempt.

EDIT: Though I find it strange that you weren't able to intimidate the priest. If I remember correctly you only needed one point in coercion for it. *think*
SECOND EDIT: The wiki (which is never reliable) doesn't mention how many points you need for the intimidate check, but it does mention you need two points to pass the persuade check if you offered a 30 silver tithe, so I assume you need three points with no tithe.

Yeah, had a look at that. Was wondering if anyone had actually done it without a tithe. Usually Persuade checks add your cunning score so thought that might've tipped me over the line. Ah well, I'll give the damn tithe.

I don't know if the 30 silver tithe is considered a small or a large one for this purpose -- it's called "medium" but is figured into the persuade check. Probably nets you needing 2 points in coercion, however, as the "big donation" really is quite big.
Edit: Ok, reading the actual code, not the scripting comments, it works like this:
5 sovereign donation = 1 point persuasion
30 silver donation = 2 points persuasion
10 silver donation = 3 points persuasion
no donation = autofail

In effect Sten's life is worth 10 silver to 5 gold. Nice.
Well, though you don't want to, having Leliana is an autopass. A threat just takes 1 point of coercion unless Leliana if repaired (yes, she has lines there as well) or Alistair are in the party -- then it's an autopass as well.
Edit: I totally ninja edited this...

Revered Mother: You dare to bring that qunari here! Get him out! Out!
Sten: I sense I am unwanted.
Warden: What's the matter?
Revered Mother: This is intolerable! Leave at once!
-or-
Warden: I apologize. We will go.
Revered Mother: Thank you. We have enough troubles without having to face that creature again.

Unless I am playing Anti-Chantry, I do not mind the donation, seeing as this location is indeed helping others.

So weird she doesn't go "err how did he get out of the cage?" or try to stop you from taking him since she hasn't said it's ok. Maybe it's meant to be dialogue you would get if you go into the Chantry with him after she allows you to release him? I never go into the Chantry again after that as far as I can remember or at least not with Sten.
She's so upset that you let the heathen out of his cage that it slipped her mind. I personally take Alister out of the party, and if the priest refuses to listen to reason, threaten her for both Morrigan's and my enjoyment.

Even though I'm not a big fan of the Chantry organization as a whole, at this local level, I agree.
I kind of feel bad for the revered mother. Their bann abandoned them leaving her responsible for the welfare of the entire village. Meanwhile, a darkspawn horde descends upon them...And even though I love Sten, her reaction is understandable considering what he is in fact guilty of doing. Cut the poor woman some slack!

Well, it's not like they used the money for themselves at that particular point in time. Considering they were about to be swarmed with darkspawn, it's obvious it was all going to helping people at the time.HolyAvenger wrote...

And I need every red cent to end the friggen Blight.
I gave her money in my canon-nice playthrough.
