I don't even know how to properly speak to people who don't understand that a dwarf could possibly be a love interest. It's like some foreign concept akin to First Contact or something of that nature.

It seems pretty simple a concept to me: most people want to romance the young and attractive characters and Bioware has so far stuck pretty well to that them. Garrus is the only straying from it I can think of.

Heck, I can't think of a dwarf love interest in any fantasy media at all, be it books, games, movies or comics.

Unless the unknown extra companion turns out to be a dwarf mage I doubt we'll be seeing any other dwarf characters in Dragon Age 2. And i'd say given Bioware's track record on romancable characters, a young, somewhat attractive human has a much higher chance of being a love interest than a dwarf. Both are long shots, but between the two i'd expect to see a DLC love interest before a dwarf love interest. Though just by looks, the unknown mage and Fenris are almost certainly the two male love interests.

I know, right?!

Most people? Jeeze then, I wonder what all those people in the Varric thread are doing, how large is it now? 500+ pages?

Who are you to say what most people want?

Seriously. I don't think I've ever played a Lady Aeducan who didn't end up attached to him. All it takes is that "magical broom" line, and I'm putty in his manly, dwarven hands.

Since when was a thread on a forum a indication of anything? If we were to take that, then every Bioware project would be doomed because the vast bulk of their forums before game release is doomsaying.;)

*clap hands*

Oh! Oh! I had only one Lady Aeducan that didn't romance Gorim because I decided she was going to end up with Leliana in that game, thus preferring only women. I LOLed at the double meaning in this exchange with Gorim:

Gorrim: "Lord Harrowmont is hoping you'll be swept off your feet by a man in the Provings."
Aeducan: "That's not likely to happen."

Gorim! <3

On topic, I kind of want to believe that every party member will be a love interest (excluding Bethany/Carver), but am staying cautiously pessimistic.  Romances aren't central to the story, after all (just a much loved bonus) and I'd rather get more LI's than expected then hope for too many and be disappointed.

@werghu Shhhh I can't remember what Garrus is. I just know he sexy. Gimme a break. lol

He looks like a lizard, but they had said the Turrian species is more bird-like. Thats why I put that.

Sigh.

The people that post in these forums are a sample size of all the people who will play the game. And judging by this sample, Varric is one of the most popular companions currently announced.

Kind of like how a poll works you know. You may not get each and every potential vote, but you can get a large enough base to judge something.

Well you have to determine if the sample size is statistically valid. I mean if you have 500 people who think Varric is the cat's meow, that could very well mean nothing if the player base is 2 million people.

It doesn't matter what people on threads say. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is what the writers want to do with their game. Below is an old post that David Gaider made ages ago. It doesn't mean there is a dwarf romance in DA2, but it means they don't have the same kind of hang-ups the community does and the door is absolutely not closed on dwarf romances from their end.

Umm... no. While there's always room for individual opinion, dwarves and elves haven't historically intersected very much.

And I'm not sure why everyone is so concerned about dwarf romances. If you're playing a dwarf and you think it's weird, then my suggestion would be not to romance anyone. One day, however, we WILL do a dwarf-specific romance. I swear it.

Hm, here's what I think:

fem!Hawke

straight
     - Fenris
bi
     - Sebastian
     - "Anders"
     - Isabela

m!Hawke

straight
     - Merrill
bi
     - Sebastian
     - "Anders"
     - Isabela

I know a lot of people don't think Sebastian should be on the list, but I have my reasons; just because Bioware hasn't made a romanceable DLC character doesn't mean they won't. I'd like to think Sebastian's their first. We'll know one way or another once the game comes out in March, so here's hopin'.

Sebastian is cute and everything. I would love to have him as an option as a LI (though I'd pick Varric or Fenris for the first few playthroughs). But people don't understand that its not that they can't make a DLC character a romance. They could very possibly manage that. Its just very very unfair. Not everyone can download him. Thats the thing. Bioware wouldn't do that because taking a LI option from the females would be a very poor decision. But here's to hoping that everyone gets what they want. As long as I get Varric and/or Fenris. (xD)

I would love for them to make everyone not dlc or related a romance option.

...Did they really do that for ME2?

@Gilsa

I love you for that snippet of Gaider's post. I know that it may not mean Varric, but its certainly helps me find my happy thought.

The problem though is if it means DA3 or whenever they decide for it, I'm afraid the dwarf won't be as attractive as Varric. Ha ha.

Almost...Grunt the Krogan couldn't be romanced.

At least I hope not.

Has anybody considered the reported non-party member romances? There was a dev quote about it somewhere but I'm having trouble digging it up...
It
occurred to me the other day that the m/m LI might not be Fenris,
"Anders" or anyone who joins the party at all (I seriously doubt it,
though, and I'm personally leaning towards "Anders").

Of
course, these non-party member 'romances' could very well simply be the little flings you could
have in DAO with Dairren, Iona, Cammen and Gheyna, and nothing more serious than that...

I don't see what 'fairness' has do to with anything. Offering DLC at all is 'unfair' to some people, that doesn't make them stop offering it. I fear Sebastian won't be an LI because he's a DLC and they haven't done it before, but I'm still holding out hope that he is. Tough luck for people who can't get the DLC, but nothing is ever 100% fair.

That said, I think we have plenty of reasons for why he won't be an LI, unfortunately. For one, he's a prince. That caused problems with Alistair's romance for anyone who wasn't Cousland. For another, isn't he also a member of the Chantry? That makes me think he's going to be like Samara, teasing us with temptation before finally deciding his faith and vows are more important to him. :(

I have to agree that really there's nothing "fair" about DLC at all, and I really don't see it as an impediment to romance. It would be great if Sebastian is romancible. I honestly don't think Fenris will be though. Not with his personal background issues :). I'd love it if Varric was, but I'm pretty sure I'll be romancing "Anders" whether or not it is actually Anders. I just want to romance a male mage. *goes off into happy dreamland*.

I also REALLY like the idea of out-of-party romances.

I don't really see why Sebastian having romance content is any more unfair than all the other content that comes with him that non-paying players can't see.

It's not. Someone asked if he was romanceable in his thread, and the dev response was "Pick the flirty dialogues and find out." And anyway, DLC is plenty fair. Everyone has the opportunity to get it as long as they pay.
