Just thought it would be interesting to see what class & Squad ability setup best suits people's playstyles. I've seen a lot of people on here with "class X is awesome for insanity" and "Ability X is a must for hardcore or above", right along side people complaining that the same ones suck.

So, what class(es)/ability fit your playstyle the best?

My personal list for classes (from best to worst) is:
Note: I haven't played on Insanity yet, just up to and including Hardcore

Adept
Infiltrator
Soldier
Sentinel
Vanguard
Engineer (Gods I hate the engineer!)

Ability wise most of them seem to have their places, but Inferno Grenade and Reave are probably the ones I use the most often (Flashbang grenade I just cannot make work, it always does zero when I use it).

What about you guys? I'm pretty sure someone will post a pretty much reverse order of what I just did :)

Most powerful to least powerful:

Vanguard
Soldier
Infiltrator
Sentinel
Engineer
Adept

Weapons and ammo rule the game. The powers are seriously gimped on insanity, especially biotics.

I would be glad to tell you a fairy tale if I didn't have to go under your bridge. Perhaps you could make a constructive comment instead of trolling.

You are the one to say that lol

It has been explained many times - biotics are not gimped. Explaining and showing that it's true gets really old and boring, when the other side ignores all the evidence and facts, and simply repeats the same thing over and over again. Watch any video by Bozorgmehr in his The Power of the Adept thread.

I would think that Kronner, Bozorgmehr, Sinosleep, AverageGatsby, or ThisIsMe have long since proven that powers are far from gimped on insanity.

I've played all classes at least once on Insanity. So far, I've enjoyed a lot

Vanguard

Engineer

...

Still deciding what place for Sentinel, Infiltrator(about to start a run focusing on CQC, sniping bores me) and Adept

...

...

...

Soldier. I know I'll get bored if I ever play that class again.

So long as you have the sense to strip protections before using crowd control abilities, I find biotics are still damned effective even on Insanity and Warp is obviously very useful.

That said I still think Shockwave sucks pretty hard on Insanity since you very rarely find yourself in a situation where you can strip the defenses of a large group and then land a shot on the whole group with Shockwave since the shockwave takes time to get to them.   In those situations area pull, singularity or even area throw all seem like better options or for that matter flashbang grenade or even concussive blast.

As for ranking the relative power of the classes.

I'd say the easiest class is Infiltrator since you can snipe and get yourself out of situations which would spell certain doom for any other class by cloaking, plus you can deal heavy damage against armor and solid damage against shields with Incinerate.  Its still a fun class though.

Soldier is my favorite class to play as since I like shooting things and manually controlling my squad's powers for support and probably the second easiest class after infiltrator.   In my opinion the +100% to +140% weapon damage bonus that Adrenaline Rush gives you makes it the most powerful ability in the game.  It won't save your ass from certain doom like the Infiltrator's cloak will; but the damage you can lay down with it is pretty awe inspiring particularly with a Mattock in your hands.

Sentinels seem like the next most powerful to me since they have a damage dealing ability for any situation and added protection in the form of tech shields.  Personally I don't find them a lot of fun to play as though since they don't really have strengths or weaknesses that you have to adapt to.  Assault style sentinels who charge in with extreme agression seem like more fun; but as the type of player who likes to try and control the terrain that's not really my style.

Adepts would come next for me since they have warp and an arsenal of crowd control abilities including Singularity which is damned fierce.   If you combine them with squadmates who can use warp or who's powers you can use warp detonate on then they are very nasty against armored enemies and unholy against enemies with barriers.  They struggle against shielded enemies; but so long as you bring along squadmates with area overload or Tali's Area Energy Drain they can still bring the pain with their crowd control.  Miranda is particularly great in combination with an Adept against shielded enemies since she can take down shields with overload or detonate biotic powers with warp or even set up a warp detonation with slam.

I have a hard time judging the ferocity of Vanguards.  I've seen some people who are really badass with them; but personally I could just never get into the mindset of using charge.  I think its because I like to fight by using tactics and terrain to control the battlefield while the Vanguard demands agression.  That's not to say that using charge intelligently doesn't require tactics since I found myself getting killed with it quite frequently, it just requires a different mindset that I never seemed to be able to get into.  Overall my least favorite class; but that's really a matter of taste.

The Engineer does seem to be the most difficult class although I also find it to be a fun challenge.  It really demands that you try to keep your enemies distracted and off balance in order to achieve victory.  Engineers are very powerful against synthetics since even 2nd level AI hacking allows you to keep them constantly focused on one of their own allies.  They definitely struggle against biotics although using an allies warp ability to drop barriers before nailing them with cryo blast is pretty damned effective.

As for how fun I find the classes to be...

Soldier:  I like shooting stuff, so I enjoy this class.  If I left my squad's power usage on automatic it would be pretty mind numbing; but by setting it to manual and frequently ordering them to take a particular position I find that I can scratch my desire for tactics while still having more fun shooting stuff then I could with any other class.  Since you have to rely largely on your squad's powers you are somewhat more limited in the combos you can set up; but the combo of a protection stripping attack followed by a crowd control ability still works great.

Infiltrator:
I enjoy sniping and using cloak to fly around the battlefield like a ghost is a lot of fun.  Kind of easy though.

Adept:
Has some challenging weaknesses; but also opens up an array of devestating combos when using protection stripping attacks followed by crowd control and then following up with a warp detonation.

Engineer:  Trying to keep your enemy constantly distracted makes for an interesting challenge.

Sentinel:  I certainly feel powerful when I'm playing a Sentinel; but the class is so versatile that I rarely find myself in a situation which forces me to adapt to my weaknesses.

Vanguard:
Charge is just not my cup of tea.  Some people love it; but I could never get a feel for it.

I've had trouble getting into most of the classes. I admit. I've got a particular play-style that some would find boring. I'm a much more range-oriented player. I prefer to use long-range weapons with tight tolerances, such as sniper rifles and the assault rifles. I'm less inclined towards biotics. I have a particular love of Adrenaline Rush and so have to rank the Soldier as my top pick, followed fairly closely by the Infiltrator (god, I love the sniper rifle).

While I just finished saying I'm not particularly inclined towards Biotics, I do have to admit that the Adept was fun, once I took it off Insanity and dropped the difficulty setting to Veteran. I've only played through Insanity on Soldier and found the combat to be a bit too tedious and while I did finish the game on this setting, I rarely go back to it. Generally I top out at Hardcore or Veteran now, to give solid fights that don't drag on through multiple resistance strips and so on.

Unlike Mass Effect 1, Adepts are a solid challenge in ME2 and not a god mode setting. I found high level Adepts to be so absurdly powerful in ME1 that I actually didn't bother with one in ME2 for quite a while.

Anyway:

Soldier

Infiltrator

Adept

the others in no particular order, I've never really got into them and haven't actually finished the game with any of them.

Never played on Insanity (just *not* my thing lol), but I can surely rank the classes because I got a "Shep" for each class. :)

Mass Effect 1 (from favorite/best to least favorite, in my opinion of course)

-Sentinel- very fun and able to debilitate, heal, and cast, my most enjoyable playthrough

-Engineer- much better in ME1 with the tech abilities, plus with a bonus sniper rifle he's better than the infiltrator

-Vanguard- i like spellsword classes so this one fit naturally...my canon shep is a vanguard

-Adept- fun but being an exclusive caster can get boring

-Infiltrator- physically weak imo in this one...the soldier or engineer does better

-Soldier- not very fun in the first game

Mass Effect 2 (the rankings changed...drastically):

-Sentinel (can cast, debilitate, and tank...my jack of all trades, love it)

-Infiltrator (now PLAYS like one in ME2, sniping is a lot of fun

-Soldier (much better in this one and much more fun to play)

-Vanguard (its good but not great, a bit overrated)

-Engineer (good cyro and incinerate as well as the drone but many skills were taken out that made it good)

-Adept (got nerfed in ME2 big time...not as fun to play)

Two weeks ago I would have had the Adept down the bottom. Now I am really not so sure. I have been playing through in ironman style (if you die even once you lose) and got all the way through to Talis loyalty mission which I left until just before the disabled reaper. I did actually play on for interest sake and completed it without dieing again. When I did die, I had actually respeced into energy drain and I was playing differently. I'm going to eventually try again. I managed to get right through with a soldier but failed four times with a sentinel which I thought would be easiest.

With Heavy Singularity, the Adept has the firepower at range and because the recharge times on everything else are so low Barrier is actually an excellent panic button and almost always available.

In terms of effectiveness in combat, I'd rank them as follows.

1. Sentinel

2. Soldier

3. Infiltrator

4. Vanguard

5. Engineer

6. Adept

Adept is by no means bad, it's just not as reliable as a class with magic holo-plate armor gifted to Commander Shepard by the immortal pantheon of John Wayne, Oprah Winfrey, and Jesus.
