I'd just like for this not to happen again. Even barring the whole demo speculation drama, we were told we would get something exciting today and what we got was a huge disappointment.

Yep, this is very similar to the whole announcement of an announcement when Dragon Age: Origins was in development.

At least this time the hype was created by us and not Bioware.

Yes.

Tell me Varric and Aveline are romancable and all will be forgiven.

You mean that Aveline was never confirmed to be a LI?

Sigh.. I don't even care anymore. Killzone 3 Multiplayer Beta is coming out tomorrow. Atleast I have something to look forward to..

How do you know that isn`t a trick as well? What if killzone has a new facebook game that`ll be in beta tomorrow?

They lock it now and a new one will pop up.:bandit:

I doubt it. This is no longer an issue up for debate. As certain as we were with one random picture that there would be a demo, as certain we can be after EA Czech's announcement as well as DA Legends' that there will be no demo.

Now go home and start the crying already!

Amazing how a little attempt a bit of humor is met with such hostility.

They could easily have said "No a demo 2/1, not commenting on the banner we mailed out, something else is coming on 2/1" and we should have awwww'd and moved on to obsessing over other things.

The way this went down is ****.

This is almost as good as "More July 9, 2008"

Which my bookmark straight to the DA page is still labeled as, because it amuses me.

Rage more, you crazy rage diamonds.

That was the watershed marketing even in Dragon Age's marketing history.

I hope people have learned their lessons today.

1) Don't hype yourselves up for something that's not promised to you.

2) Lack of denial of something is not the same thing as confirmation of something.

3) Sometimes there are bad announcements. That's when we act like adults, deal with it, and move on with our day.

So people are angry they didn't get told their speculation was wrong? When has Bioware made a habit of that?

If Bioware had still planned to use today as a major announcement they would have probably had a countdown of some sort or something on the front page of the site. Yesterday Joystiq.com posted all the demos/games that was going to be released this week, DA2 was not on it. The chances of Bioware sneaking a demo out was unlikely. Yes they should have eased our minds and stated something, but I don't think they have to apologize for the fans taking something and running with it. If they were going to release a demo they would have probably advertised the crap out of it anyways so that the casual public would know it was coming, not just the folks that bought DA Awakening. As I said, I don't think Bioware is 100% to blame for this situation.

I feel sad now

Lots of us dont care about the demo thing. We just care that we were promised info or something and Devs didnt deliver on their promise.

Dragon Age 2 is NOT released in August. There is a supercool trailer
coming in August, but DA2 will NOT be out in August (somewhere I can
hear Mike Laidlaw and teh Dev team having heart attacks thinking of
launching in a month).

The February date is a promise of
something cool, but not necessarily the launch of DA2. You'll just have
to wait and see what we come up with.
End Quote
See that, its a promise that he didnt deliver on.

Expectations are just resentments waiting to happen, as anyone who has ever visited the Lionhead forums should know by now.

I'm not angry, I'm just in awe that this was the trick they had up their sleeves. I was hoping for a demo, but the death of the first thread took care of most of that hope last night, but to get nothing else but an announcement that a beta was still, in fact, a beta just seems......odd, I guess.

I guess I'm more confused than anything else. It seems like something else should happen but it's just.....not going to. And it seems strange :?

Are the forumites to blame? Yes. But this could've all been stopped if BioWare had admitted that there was no demo. Whilst we have no right to be angry that there was no demo, it does peeve me personally that BioWare didn't step in and just quash the rumours, but instead let the hype build over false hopes.

I would put this in my signature if I didn't feel like it would just be doing the same thing as those who are putting 02.01.11 and being an upset child.  Awesome post anyway.

"This has to be one of the worst PR events for a AAA game I have ever seen. Lets just go ahead and list some of these bad boys out shall we?

1. Put little flyers in all of our games stating something awesome would happen 02/01/2011. This was just over a year ago.

2. Announced they had begun work on DA 2. This is about 6 months after DA:O came out

3. Released some of the worst screen shots for new game ever

4. Started talking about "Fighting like a Spartan and thinking like a General." When asked what this meant both the PR department and developers had no idea... and then kept repeating it. Everywhere.

5. Started talking about "hot-rodding" the art style. This is also about the same time they started bashing DA:O. Saying it was generic, slow paced, too hard, not action packed enough, confusing.

6. Unleashed the developers/writers to go and talk freely about the up coming game on the message boards. They did little to quell any concerns and seemed more interested in banning people and starting flame wars.

7. Released an image depicting "Different Standards of Beauty" depicting the new art style and what the redesigned races would look like. They then wiped out the new dwarves and female Qunari models as they "ran out of time" to implement them in the game. This was like 4 months ago. Plenty of time for them to know they were not going to appear in the game. So why release it? Not to mention the "different standards of beauty" are all slim well toned women with hour glass figures and beefy men. Not too ground breaking there.

8. Released a demo version of the first area to be played at game conventions. Then went ballistic when those stupid gamers started talking about how they turned DA into a hack and slash.

9. Started freaking out when people were talking about how bad the graphics and animations were. Claimed that absolutely everything shown was from a pre-Alpha build and would not be indicative of the actual game. Kept freaking out about the hack and slash talk.

10. Reacted to the hack and slash uproar by... bashing Origins more. Claiming the pace was far too slow and console gamers didn't enjoy not slamming on buttons to make things happen. Also stating that most console gamers found it to be too hard to switch to different characters. Stated the new game would be able to be completed on Normal difficulty with out having to change characters or set up the other party members tactics.

11. Realizing this was the exact opposite of what they should have said, they then started claiming that it played exactly like Origins. Released a video of the new combat system.... which looked exactly like their "pre-Alpha don't worry this isn't how the game will be guys" demo. Showed that it is still possible to pause the game but there is no longer a reason to as we had just seen them run in without using any tactics at all and destroy the same group of enemies with no consequence except for losing a bit more health.

12. Banner ad appears in a news letter stating that a demo will be released 02/01/2011. Is this the great thing they were talking about on those little sheets in the original game?!

13. NOPE! But instead of quieting the rumors and letting everyone know it was just a mistake or some hacker or something, they let it ride! No publicity is bad publicity!

14. Turns out the big announcement they kept screaming about for 02/01/2011 was a closed Beta test for a Facebook game.... that they had already announced.... months before.... that won't even be ready until the actual game is already out.

Feel free to add any others that you guys can think of. I have more but this getting long. NEVER CHANGE BIOWARE PR TEAM!"

I find myself nodding to this
