So the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT that Bioware felt the need to advertise with a flyer in DAA, was, infact, an announcement for a facebook game that virtually no one can play yet...wow...

Oh no it's better then that. The game was already announced weeks ago. What they announced today was the beta simply entered another stage of beta!

Graider said it was going to be something cool, I suppose it's cool to those who work on the project.

Eh, at least trying to explain the nature of the situation wouldn't be a terrible thing, IMO. Its the lack of communication thats annoying, as for months, the nature of the Awakening card was treated like it was some super secret thing worth keeping under wraps for close to a year when it seems to have been an announcement of a closed beta for a facebook game already in beta? And then letting the demo thread go crazy when they possibly knew there would be no demo today?

I mean, I don't know who would be in charge of releasing the info, but this stuff, combined with how the BioWare Bazaar announcement was handled, just makes it seem like the marketing is terribly aloof and out of touch with the expectations of the fans. You're not going to please everyone naturally, but I don't think you'll be finding many people fist pumping and cheering because the Awakening card was for a closed beta of a facebook game laready in beta. I mean, come on.

That's fair. I do admit, I'd like to know the inner workings of why this was treated the way it was. But I just don't think it would solve anything. I just think it would validate my rage, and that's not helping the issue.

I find it funny how you all seem to think that Bioware has just made some royal mistake because a leaflet they put out a year ago, likely thinking Dragon Age 2 would be complete by then, or considering the promise of "two years of DLC content" it may even be announced or teased around this point.

But hey, clearly everyone is angry about this, because you're such an unbiased sample....

It would have been better to have merely stated that the leaflet was innaccurate as soon as this was realised then, rather than invent some excuse. To be honest, though, I'm more angered by the way they just left rumours of a demo circulate rather than explain it was a screw-up.

As much as I can understand the feelings behind this sentiment, and can see the reasoning behind it from a consumer's PoV... They are under an NDA, one which would lead to the loss of their jobs should they violate it in any way. These things are often many pages thick and I don't think it's fair to expect someone to take long hours of their limited free time reading up on the legalities of denying something to a relatively minute percentage of people who would have ever known about this "news"(If Mass Effect 2 sold 3 million at launch and the Bioware social have 10k, less then one half, of one percent of their total user base, and a very fanatical one half at that)

Aside from their NDA, I can bet you EA is having them look into the possibility of chopping off a section of the game to make a demo, so at this point they can't say anything either way.

I don't dispute that. But this time, they have really screwed up, and the ME2 marketing wasn't too hot either. What I'm saying is that possibly (I'm not sure about my statement regarding marketing) EA should be considered the problem here, rather than Bioware.

That is possible. I guess this might be basically an experiment?

Well, I don't think it worked very well. The timing feels all wrong to me. Maybe I'm wrong, though. It could be that the Facebook crowd will devour Legends quite happily. For me, though, it's not that big a deal. I would rather play Journeys and continue the storyline I already was interested in with a character I created.

it's a part of their "market strategy" but I don't think they get that
it's a pretty terrible marketing strategy.

It's definitely different than their previous strategy. I find it... odd. I guess it's good that we're not getting pelted with spoilers, but I would like to know at least what Lady Hawke will sound like, if not who our LIs will be. I mean, with all the articles out there about how nobody markets to women gamers and how it's a big untapped market... it's like, WTF?

I wouldn't worry about being pelted with spoilers. The fact is that unless you visit Bioware's website, you probably don't know anything about it. Even a lot of people who regularly visit this forum seem to not know up from down with this game. Isn't that the definition of failure in marketting? They've spoiled plenty of things, but they can't show us more actual gameplay? They only recently started even showing us a bit of voice acting. I'm not upset, as the game's coming out in a month so whatever, but I think Bioware should have feedback on their marketting.

This.

They basically just told us that, a year ago, they made a decision to announce on a spcific date that they would be testing their FB game.

Yay?

I hope people have learned their lessons today.
1) Don't hype yourselves up for something that's not promised to you.
2) Lack of denial of something is not the same thing as confirmation of something.
3) Sometimes there are bad announcements. That's when we act like adults, deal with it, and move on with our day.

I would put this in my signature if I didn't feel like it would just be doing the same thing as those who are putting 02.01.11 just to troll people, and being an upset child.  Awesome post anyway.

Agreed.

Glad to know you are all above us in social ladder of life. Now, if you have nothing more productive about the feedback of the actual Bioware annoucement made today, please refrain from posting. Your criticisms of others is counter-productive to the purpose of this thread. Thank you.:)

I'm not trying to insult anyone, I'm just trying to get people to realize that they should be upset at themselves rather than BioWare. BioWare promised us one thing today: an announcement. They gave us one thing today: an announcement. I understand thinking the announcement kind of sucks, that's how I feel. But I don't blame BioWare for giving us something that doesn't live up to the hype that some members of the community built up over themselves. People being upset right now feel that they're entitled to something more than what they got, which I hate to say, but they aren't.

You have to realize that the announcement about beta DA:L was made week/s before today. Some people were waiting for the Epic/awsome anouncement about Da2 not one about facebook thas has nothing to do with Da2.

Anyone who has ever worked for a large company can tell you how this happened: no communication, nobody wanted to take responsibility.

If they just came out and said that was supposed to be DA2's release date, that would help. Cause if they seriously plunked that ambiguous card in Awakening with the intent to have it hype a second stage of a spinoff facebook game, then their marketing is....ummm....lets say, special.^_^

I'm disappointed as well by the marketing, though just because people are disappointed / upset / angry doesn't mean the rules disappeared. Yelling, screaming and insulting is still against the rules and should be enforced.

Hell, half these banned people I've talked with understand what they were doing is against the rules and regreted their course of action when they calmed down.

They aren't victims of prosecution for no reason.

I'm just sort of continually baffled by decisions made by the PR and marketing guys responsible for this game, whoever they might be. I can't really think of a worse way to handle this situation than how it actually went down. So I'll just sit here, being puzzled. Not that typing this will accomplish anything. I have a feeling the marketing team is avoiding this thread like the plague (easy to do since "feedback" is quarantined here). Sigh.

This would be applicable if they didn't keep announcing that 02-01-2011 was some big, secret date. But they did. So someone decided something.

Although I have no problem with others outrage, I wasn't holding my breathe about this.. The trickle of info coming over the last few months has been ridiculously sparse/erratic, I was really doubting that they would just suddenly release a demo for the game with no build up or hinting (minus the foreign newsletter)..

Now the fact they didn't press the *cancel nuclear launch* button and quash the rumors was unprofessional, whether it was Bioware or EA's fault, doesn't matter.

Someone decided something, but failed to communicate it to everyone else. This kind of crap happens all the time in large organizations, but not as a public spectacle.
