Thanks for stopping by Woo. No really I'd like to keep this thread open and if you can clean it up without closing it I would be grateful for the extra effort you have to put in.
EDIT: If he can answer he will, he's not   Chris Priestly.  If he can't answer not a one of us in this thread is worth a reprimand/ losing his job.

Incidentally, just because Gamestop employees get early access to the PC version of the demo doesn't have to mean the PC version is the only one that exists. The public launch on 23rd may very well include console versions, too.

This thread is like watching a train wreck... I just can't look away. What I really want is to hear from a dev, but I'm thinking it would be better use of my time to just come back tomorrow and skim the thread. All that's being posted right now is the same stuff over and over.

Edit: There and gone again. Well. There's always hope for tomorrow.

I almost feel bad for Bioware right now. This whole gamestop demo thing just reeks of EA, and I bet the devs are none too happy about this info getting leaked right on top of the whole 2/1/11 thing AND the scandinaviann e-mail.s

My money is on more than a few Bioware employees being utterly disgusted with how this is playing out, but not wanting to wade into the middle of it for fear of making things worse. And I don't begrudge them that at all. At this point I believe some heads may roll, so anyone who draws attention to themselves may be asking for trouble.

I'm going to ask people to please stop swearing in this thread. We can freak out and disagree with each other (and us) without swearing, name-calling or insults. I would also like to remind people of the rest of the Site Rules. Just because you are upset does not mean you don't have to follow the rules.

Some spam has been removed, some warnings and bans handed out. thank you.

Keep up the good work champ.. Gotta keep the riff raff out. keep them rabble rousers down. and what not... BTW, your marketing department is BS and whomever is heading it should be fired. Cheers!

Since it's wild, speculative theory week on the BSN. Here's mine:
The exclusivity mentioned in the Gamestop page isn't as specific as we're assuming, and is an exclusive window for participating retailers to have access to the demo of the game. That would explain why a Danish (I think) retailer had a "demo now" image, for example. They made the mistake of putting it out for the public when it was meant only for their employees, just like Gamestop. I would not be shocked if many retailers have similar deals and offers. Why? Because offering an employee exclusive to a single brick and mortar store makes absolutely no sense.
So what happened?
Retailers are offered an exclusive window PC demo to try out the game, ostensibly to give them advance information on the game to give to customers at the point of sale, or whatever. A Danish retailer messes up and posts an image part of this announcement on a public forum and the BSN explodes into a speculative fervor just in time for it to be coincidentally linked to the 2.1.11 announcement.
Bioware is now doubly screwed. If there had been no demo speculation, people would have been disappointed sure - not many around here seem to care much about Dragon Age: Legends. But would there have been the same amount of forum rage? I'm not sure. I wasn't one of the bigger ragers. They can't not announce DA:L, because hey, that was the plan. And they can't talk about the details of the retailer exclusive because it is subject to an NDA (hinted at in Gamestop's webpage signup) and not available to players for another three weeks anyway.
Who screwed up here?
Well, aside from the dubious decisions of Bioware marketing in the first place - which I don't really believe I'm in a position to personally criticize because I'm not in marketing, but hey, it doesn't seem to be working. The one who really tossed the gasoline onto the fire that is the BSN is the Danish retailer who screwed up and posted the image in the wrong place.
Now that's how I do my speculative, assumption based narratives. Booyakasha.

Here what I dont understand.

What does Gamestop wins in the deal? Sure, it's great that the employees can play the game but EA could have send a fact sheets about the game and it would have been the same thing. Its not an exclusive pre-order bonus or something...

Or the second thing. Why limit access till the 23 to a large portion of the playerbase? Dont you want to show the game to as many people as possible? Isnt the playerbase the actual target for marketing?

The wording in the Demo site is also awkward: In appreciation of your support of the Dragon Age franchise,

BioWare would like you to have early access to the Dragon Age 2 PC demo. This exclusive hands on access will allow you to experience one of the year's most anticipated titles before anyone else. With this early insight into Dragon Age 2's revised visceral combat, gripping story elements and enhanced visuals you will become a key source of knowledge for Gamestop customers and BioWare fans. Dgon Age 2 will be available on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on March 8, 2011.

Why release it on PC only? I know this isnt the preferred platform and it wont be the one selling the most...

This entire thing feels like a giant nightmare to me. Things unwrapped and spilled all over the place. Now, someone has to pick up the mess.

Actually, I believe the PC IS the preferred platform, since PC players get more control over the combat and other mechanics. I believe it may be selling the most. I know I preordered it for PC. :P

That and it's 9:30pm. Aside from people crunching, the entire office (which includes Marketing) is closed and has been for hours.

360 is selling the most, strangely enough. I'll dig up where I found that out when I can be bothered, recent enough thread.

Because you actually think Stan Woo (or Chris Priestly, or David Gaider, or even Mike Laidlaw) gets to decide whether or not he can respond to your questions.

Why do you assume this?

Khayness wrote...

What's that got to do with their initial and primary platform?

I play on consoles and PC.  I have no horse in this race.  Just pointing out that Bioware's straddled the line between PC and console developer pretty consistently for some time now.

I'm sorry, did those not come out on PC? I'll have to give you ME1 since the PC version was second and all there for whatever reason. But just because the games were developed for consoles alongside the PC so they could make more money does not mean they're not primarilly a PC developer.

And besides...PC games get mods so clearly they're the superior version.

Augh, I hate GameStop. Come on, BioWare, stop playing favorites with your retailers. We all pre-ordered, why can't we all get the demo?

We don't actually know that the early demo is gamestop only, its just the only thing that has been 'confirmed'. Could be other early demos out there for other retailers that we don't know about.

Oh the joys of imperfect information.

Yeah, it's almost like I have nothing to say on this subject. Strange, isn't it? It doesn't seem to have mattered a whit, really. Y'all don't really need any kind of official confirmation or discussion, y'all are riding the righteous indignation train pretty well on your own. ;)
