I would assume it would have something to do with the tear tracking the facial contour, basically the problem would be keeping the tear tracking on any facial shape.

They should do it like this. Then face won't matter.

However, that would be the most awkward  choice I could find on a dialogue wheel or an action trigger.

Hawke: NOOOOOO! BETHAANY! WAAAAAAAAH! *sniff* AAAHHHHH WHYYYY!

*Qunari blinks*

Passive Aggressive: AAAAHHHH WHHHHHHYYY! *nose sniffs, mouth quivers and drools*

*Qunari blinks*

Qunari: ...Look, I. Wow. I didn't think it was that big a deal!

Hawke: Meanie! A BIG MEANIE! WAAAH!

Qunari: Erm...look, I'm actually a nice guy in Seheron...I'm just-

Hawke:  YOUR JUST A MEANIE, A MEANIE! *cries harder. The blood smear is from a runny nose*

Qunari: Okay, okay! I I'm just trying to spread the Qun, just relax....
*The qunari coos, and puts his hand on Hawke*

Qunari: Shhhh...it's okay

*Hawke continues to whimper*

Sorry if it's been mentioned already, but I know for certain fem Shep let's a tear slide in one shot in Mass Effect 2. It's one of my favorite cutscenes ever, no one's really unshakable. The scene is in the video in my sig if you don't believe it.

It's after the Archangel mission back at the ship. 

edit: Actually I take it back there's no actual tear, it's just her scars, but she does look as sad as I've ever seen her.

I think your protagonist completely breaking down at some point when he or she has been pushed and tested beyond her limits and is struggling to continue would only further humanise the character and make us more able to relate to her. As much as you might try to play off the macho type we've all felt frustration or indignant so much so we could cry, even if its just as children.

QFT...I'm probably one of the biggest Medal Gear haters ever born...but whoever posted that video of Big Boss dieing...that was an awsome scene. Was abit long, but then I hear Medal Gear is pretty much 90% cutscenes anyway. Point is...that may have just been a single manly tear...but it was done brilliently.

Well, in some cases I see how some would cry, but that is why it would be an option I guess... or maybe a cutscene after something that was inevitable. (Like a Virmire event in Mass Effect.)

Still... some people do make their characters the epitome of a hard baked rugged hero or whatever.

For example: My Shepard was the Renegade type Earthborn hero who raised himself, and sacrificed the lives of his men to get an objective done. When he sacrificed those men, he didn't even bat an eye lash because he saw the objective as more important then his men. (That's the way I saw it... when given the option of his background at the start of Mass Effect. So I really couldn't see my Shepard crying... as for my Hawke... I've yet to decide. )
