my ranger pets are not saving their tactics. Each time I summon them I have to setup the tactics. Yes I am hiting the save tactics button on the bottom. You also can not access their tactics screen from the button at top on the ui, only when you first summon them by clicking on the tactics text that appears.

perhaps you're not really supposed to be able to set their tactics? it "is" technically a wild animal afterall

well they have a tactics screen and you are able to set tactics for them. The pets have more abilities than you can use from the quick bar, which are only available in the tactics screen. The tactics are just not saving and you have to set them up each time you summon, which would seem like a bug to me, or very poor ui planning.

This is super annoying and makes me wish I hadn't taken ranger spec as it leaves it totally broken...since the pets just auto attack and thats it unless you spend a minute setting up the tactics again every time you step through a damn door and have to re-summon them!

How the hell do you set their tactics in the 1st place? PLEASE tell me! Is it a PC only thing or something?

I have the same issue of not saving tactics of summons. I agree it probably isn't supposed to be possible to set their tactics, though the situation is rather complex. Note I have the PC version.
First of all when summoning a pet the tactics button does not appear unless your cunning is high enough. I'm not sure of the number because I didn't really pay much attention. At first it says "1 Tactics slot acquired" or whatever, if you further increase cunning you get 2 extra tactics slots, and I assume that would increase to 3 etc...
Further, as was stated there are several abilities not available on the skill bar which the pets have. Bears have rage and that attack ability (name eludes me it's on the skill bar) with max ranger skill they also have overwhelm. Wolves have Howl, Dread Howl, Overwhelm and one of Charge, Growl, or Shred (upgraded wolf has all 6 abilities just can't can't remember which of last three regular wolf has). The Spider has Web and Poison Spit and when upgraded Overwhelm as well.
Finally using the 2 pet bug, that is while one is summoning queue up another one so you have two summons out at once. Once you have 2 summons out (with one character) you can actually access the character, inventory, and tactics screen for the pets like any other party member. (e.g. select pet and open the menus, or open munus and cycle through to theirs). In this way you can access the tactics screens for summons anytime after they've been summoned, else you have to be fast and click the "tactics slot acquired" text in the lower left at the time of summoning.
Final notes, all except the final paragraph applies to summoned skeletons as well, except it's magic not cunning, and I'm not sure f they have extra hidden abilities, don't really remember. Also there is a mod which makes summons stay during area transitions.

It wouldn't be an issue (as much) if they used their extra abilities but getting the ranger mastery seems pointless when they get overwhelm and don't use it...

i always wondered this, when i summon pets i get 2 tactics added or some and i never found a way to set them, how does someone even access their tactics?

You can get to their tactics by clicking the "1 tactics slot added" banner, but that seems to be the only way to access it.

If you set the tactics to say "Enemy: Nearest Visible --> Overwhelm" they do use it. I realize I wrote a lot before, but if you read it I detailed how to access the pet tactics in two ways. As the poster above said, click the banner with one pet, else if using the two pet bug just open the tactics screen.

If you had read my other post in this thread you would see I mention having to set tactics every time they are summoned. Thanks though...
It wouldn't be that big an issue if the tactics would save, you could set em once and forget about it for the most part. As it is its beyond frustrating to have to summon and set tactics every time you step through a door...
QA on this game was pretty crap if they didn't even test out one of the specs most likely to be taken (drizzt clones) for a class.

Ranger is a lot of fun and probably one of the best specializations, but changing the tactics everytime is really frustrating.

I have 2 rogues (2 of them are Rangers), and wish the pet tactics worked better. But with things like Stealing *still* FUBARed *and* not being discussed decently with the comunity by Bioware, I doubt the pet issue is high up their ladder of priorities.....
