If you set up your attributes the right way then yes you can have a "trailer" hawke. But remember trailer hawke got his ass kicked in close combat.. So few people remember this.

Stupid trailer hawke, swinging his staff around when he should have been blasting that qunari.. 

I wouldn't say he got his ass kicked. He got beat in close-combat, but he did pretty well against a 7 ft tall master of arms

Hawke's Mage Armor is the armor of the champion. You get it from killing the High Dragon which is rather hard to kill, but is worth it. If you aren't a mage than you get the armor of the champion for you class. It looks the exact same as in the very start of the game.      

Oh and he didn't get his ass kicked... It was a qunari and those things are just kick ass.
