if you like the Cain you need to try out the following:

1) get an infiltrator
2) get the widow sniper rifle
3) get a heavy mech
4) strip it of shields and armour and damage it slightly
5) use cloak and line up a head shot (and make sure you shot its head off)
6) run ...
7) look back

ideally area: Just before you 'meet' Fade or in an iirc Blue Sun base (the one with the emergency beacon ... not 100% sure so). But any scenario with a heavy mech will do ...

Disclaimer:
I don't really know if you can pull that off with another sniper rifle or an other weapon. The only times it seemed to have happened was when I was on an infiltrator and I had the widow. Even so I tend to aim for the head even without a sniper scope. Granted it was usually only then that I tried it on purpose.

I always use this in Garrus loyalty mission against the two heavy mechs, kill one with a head shot and the other goes to hell with the explosion.

I've never actually used the Widow. I always play as a Soldier, and the Viper is a good enough sniper rifle that it just makes sense to pick up the Revenant.

I'm going to start a game as an Infiltrator and try it out someday.

On my insanity playthrough, i used the Cain to destroy the end boss, and it was just about the most satisfying final shot in any game.

You tried the Mattock? I've loved the Widow since the day I first got it, but the Mattock is just so... you just want more! Oh, I love a good semi-auto rifle.

My first Cain moment was on Illium, where you fight the huge gunship? I got annoyed and whipped out the Cain and lobbed one at the thing.. ..missed it by an inch. Cussed and shouted and continued the fight, finished the fight, then just as I'm running up the platform? Everything slows down in the manner of the Cain explosion, confused I try to look around, only to spot a tiny explosion far off in the distance up against the backdrop of the Illium cityscape amongst the skyscrapers. Suddenly, memories of the drill sergeant in the Citadel flooded back to me.

"..Oh god.. I just.. ruined someone's day, didn't I?"

Well, by the time I actually used the Cain I had both read the entry on it and headshotted a YMIR Mech so I wasn't especially wowed.

I also don't use Heavy weapons hardly at all. Even when I played on hardcore I just used my Widow and my teammates.

I'm kind of in the same boat, I always find myself misering up the heavy weapon ammo (and I think this is actually a design fault in ME2). Which is a pity, since whenever I gather the balls to use either the Blackstorm or (in a few specific missions) the Cain, it's generally a rather enjoyable experience. Blackstorm for the tactical impact and the pretty effect and Cain for the "take THAT!" feeling. :P

Indeed... you just never know for sure (unless you're obsessed) when you'll be picking up more Heavy Weapon Ammo so i just never use them in case i need to grab the Cain to demolish some irritating boss i keep dieing on. I'd agree with it being a design fault tbh.

Cain was sweet though. The Colossus was also my first target with it.

I tried to use it on the final boss on my Insanity Soldier... i missed.... TWICE!

I love the Mattock too, and helps me in places where I run out of ammo. My other favorites are the Arc Projector and the Viper sniper rifle.

First target when using the Cain was the Human-Reaper.

Also what is more powerful, combining the Widow with the Cain or duct taping two Cains together?

First time I've used it against mercenary infantry, but can't remember where, when and who martyred. But I remember one thing. I was angry being low on ammo, so I've grabbed Cain and after a while of shock and admiration of weapon's power I discovered complete silence. However after picking few boxes of heavy ammo I still couldn't use it for second shot when I really needed it.

Not really a big fan of weapons that require you to hold a button down for multiple seconds just to fire the damn thing, especially when enemies can cancel the 'weapon warmup' by hitting you with a power. Nope, collector heavy weapon is more my style; Fires instantly, plenty of ammo so you can afford to miss. Downside is that it's pretty darn weak. Next time I'm gonna go with a rocket launcher.

There were 3 memorable shots I've done with the Cain on play thoughs . . .  1 involved the Colossus :o during Tali's mission (that was a WTF?!? moment for me lol!), 1 involved the boss at the end (got a direct hit! and man that felt good with that weapon's long charge up time!), and the last one which made me laugh. . .

Was on Miranda's loyalty mission, at the end I was getting really frustrated with the Asari at the end and her group of henchmen. . I had my squad on one side of the map and they kept dropping, while she + 2 of her guys had me pinned on the other side waiting for my shields to charge, and I was down to last of the medigel hoping the team wouldn't go down yet again. So I pulled out the Cain and fired it in her direction, missed her but some how wiped out all but one of her group and I swear I think that last standing Salarian said SOB! :P

The audio was still a bit distorded from the explosion, but I swear I think that's what the poor guy said! I still chuckle about that.

I can feel you pal (nothing perverted here, just so you know). Although not on Illium but against the Terminator I loaded ... , aimed ... , shot ... and ... WHAT THE FRICKIN' SHIBBERT IS THIS DARN THING DODGING MY GODDARN SHOT AAAARRRGH!!!!!!
I then took another shot at the boss with my quickly switched Handgun and suddenly BLAMM. I first thought "What the Bug just happened" and then realized the Cain-Round hit the wall. Funnily I thought "At least I get my lightshow, yeah!" and was happy enough again. Needlessly to say I stalked that Harbinger for HW Ammo and finished the darn boss off with a better placed shot.

The only time I ever use the Cain is on the cargo mission Aria gives you. One shot with the Cain will take out all three YMIR mechs without destroying any of the cargo in the area: 100% mission accomplished.

Aside from that, it's ammo requirements are just too d*mn high, the spin-up time is too d*mn long and, honestly, I just think it's about the ugliest gun in the game so I never bring it with me. I tend to stick my Soldier with the Firestorm, my Infiltrator with the Blackstorm, and my Sentinel with that Arc Projector.

First time I used it, was against Thresher Maw. Reaction was. "What the f*** just happened?"

Reading what weapons do before using them is such boring stuff. :D I think I read the words nuclear and mushroom from the description and nothing else. :P

I can't read the in-game text anyway, too tiny and blurry. I just saw the radiation stickers on the gun and thought: "Hmn. Bet this will be awesome." I was right

First time I used the Cain, there were two heavy mechs blowing me to pieces. I whipped out mah fancy new nuke launcher and thought - "Oh, why the f*** not?". I missed the mech completely and hit a pillar right in front of me. FAIL. I died instantly, but then I got the Achievement "Master At Arms" for firing five different heavy weapons.

I regret nothing.

I could've just headshot the mechs though. Lol.

When I first got the Cain, I was so happy, but i also felt like an idiot because I could never figure out how it worked (I didn't realize I needed a 100% to fire, didn't read codex entry, never charged it long enough). Anyways, I finally managed to fire it during an indoor mission and it it blew everything in sight to pieces...including me of course.
I carried it to every mission after that for the rest of my playthrough.
The collectors never new what hit them.:police:

I used it on the Collector Ship with the Praetorian, it almost killed me! Killed my Power Armor (Sentinel class) and left me llke 1/4 of health, but killed the Praetorian. Also, Grunt was below the praetorian with Fortification and he bloody survived!!

I love the Cain.

First time I used it was to blast open that wall in Kasumi's loyalty mission.I didn't kill any of the enemies in the room until I used it.The blast killed them all.
