I think that the Chantry is rather radical, a bit, without their Andraste to guide them. They should have respected the elves for their religions; why they don't bother dwarves is a mystery. As for the mages, it is the fear of the Chantry and the ruthless determination of the templars that tend to spawn apostates and maleficar. Lucky they don't survey Grey Wardens, they predate Andraste; Avernus says that only under Grey Wardens can blood magic be used and true magic research allowed to flourish in the name of arcane progress. And if the Chantry believes that if the Chant of Light should be sung in the four corners of the world, they should sent people to those corners to sing it, rather than try converting everyone to their doctrine.

They don't bother the Dwarves, because they are powerful, and supply the Chantry with all the Lyrium they could want. But I don't think even that would stop them. If you get the ending with Dagna starting a Circle in Orzammar, the Chantry get's so upset about it there are talks about an exalted march. The Chantry just want's control. Their almost as bad as the Tevinter Imperium.. Almost

You know, I read this, then I look at those two sisters in front of Denerim's chantry.

Does not compute.

I also have yet to meet any catholics, priests or otherwise, that match your description.

A while ago I was thinking how to RP a commoner. The best I came up was that I go look how some faces look and if they look good then everything they say is true and they can't have any flaws. They are like perfect people. Hell, they don't even pee or do poop! So I just obey them.

Edit: Or if I want more proof I talk with them. If they sound nice and smile and say all kind of things what you can expect good people to say, then they are again perfect, they don't need to do poop nor pee, and I just obey.

Edit: If I still have some doubts about what is good, I just go ask from some perfect people what they think of this or that, and they tell me. For example everything what chantry cultists say about mages is true. Chantry cultists are good people. It is true also that if we chant in all four corners of the world then maker will do all kind of miracles. I asked like what? I was told miracles can't be explained. I asked will I have food always? I was told I don't have to eat anymore. That sucked because I like to eat. Anyway, it must be good. The chantry cultist said so. I must begin to do something to make all people chant in the four corners of the world. Whatever it takes!

Edit: I became bored and did not know how to make people chant in all four corners in the world. So I again went to see that beautiful chantry cultist face and asked is there anything I can do? She smiled and said "donations are always welcome". So I sold all my stuff and donated the money to chantry cultists. They smiled at me and I have never felt so good. They also said they need templars and I could certainly become one. I felt honoured and asked when I can start. My life has never been so good.

Don't like them much. But i think my opinion is kinda biased since i only saw the templars that much.

If i was in Thedas i would be really confused that the only two choices i have seem way too extremists.(Chantry or Qun)

I was too confused. Very confused. Have never been so confused in any game. I could not understand how it was possible the world was like it was.

Edit: And what is the true nature of stuff. Like grey wardens. I was very suspicious of them at first, especially after the joining.

I like some characters from the chantry, and some aspects of the chantry. I don't like it unequivocally - there are clearly lots of negatives as well as positives. I think that, as an organisation, it suits Thedas very well. This is supposed to be a world with many shades of grey, after all.

I don’t like modern views, such as that a religion with political authority=ZOMG! DESTROY THE CHURCH, in my fantasy settings; it makes the setting less authentic to me. As to the actual morality of the Chantry; the Chantry is big and powerful, and because of this it causes good things and bad things to happen whether it acts maliciously or not, even so it’s the only major force that normal people have against the powers far above them. For that The Chantry is absolutely a necessity.

I don't like people/organisations who think they have the almighty knowledge and treat you like a fool/poor unfortunate soul (isn't that a little mermaid song?) for not recognizing their supremeness.

In a way yess because what other religion would you have, and if you didn't have the chantry alot of things wouldn't have happened. But overall I really don't like the chantry because they're against a lot of ppl and don't have fair rules

Why does everyone here hate the Chantry? Because nearly everyone here isn't Catholic. I'd be willing to bet if we polled every DA:O player, their views on the Chantry would directly mirror their real-life religious views.

As an atheist, I think the world would be better off without the Chantry, but I have to say that they are rather progressive compared to their real-life equivelant.  At least they have an actual reason for their witch hunts for one.

Not really, they generally class Apostes who have fleed the circle in the same catagories as Maleficar and kill them on sight even though they are not maleficar.

Yeah see.. Your doing that annoything thing of placing them in the exact same category even though 1 they aren't the same. And 2 One of them ins't even real

Why would people say? Hmm.. Well I'm not catholic so I hate this Fantasy religion wihout hearing anything of it.
If someone does that, well they are daft.

The world could do better off without the chantry, but thats a pretty big gamble. I mean the Qunari are invading again so who will Unify the lands to repell the invaders? Not the chantry like they did last time.
Then everyone has the Qun forced upon them.
With the lands unable to unify The Tevinter Imperium would invade and conquer the south. Maleficar would run free and everywhere. It would be hell

From what I've seen of them, they have done more harm than good.

How?
Apart from restricting the rights of the mages, What harm have they done? The Treatment of Elves currently is not their problem, it is the problem of the Monarchs and leaders of each of the nations.
The dales incident cannot be claimed to be wrong on their part nor wrong on the dales part. Lack of Evidence and nothing but Bias accounts means it cannot count.

And The good they have done? Maintained Order and general peace across the lands, Unified the lands against Mass Invasions of the Qunari, Taken care of dangerous maleficar and demons so they do not harm the innocent.
Organising charities to help out the poor, sick, needy.
Provided Occupations and many jobs for the people of thedas
Inspired Faith in many a people.
Organised a system so that people are able to request assistance and have it displayed publically so that they are likely to get help.

Excluding the Mistreatment of mages which Imo is over-exaggerated. And the slaying of "malefiar" when they could have been apostates is the only real harm they commit

There is evidence to show that the elves were wronged in the Dales incident- where are the elven cities? Sacked and destroyed by the chantry. Also they control the Templars by addicting them to lyrium.

And they hurt by feelings by calling me a heathen.

Yes.. There is evidence they done it, but there isn't any non bias evidence for WHY the done it. Like I said, due to lack of reasons it cannot be justified or condemned. So What happened to the dales is not really something to be counted as against the chantry

Rivain is probably a bad example of mages living alongside non mages.. Their higher ups are witches that allow themselves to be possessed by Abominations.. They are slowly falling under the beliefs and ways of the Qun and soon those mages will have their tongues cut out and leashed

Yep.

Do I like the Chantry? Well on a spirtual and humanitarian level aspect yes the Chantry is valuable for those who need it or seek it, but doctrine wise, no.  I especially don't care for the Chantry especially when it comes to the "looking down upon" of mages as they seem to do. Like the status of elves in Thedas's human world, mages are looked down upon for a talent that they are born with through no fault of their own.  Unfortunately the templars are also as much "victims" of Chantry doctrine as mages being roped in as "damage control".  For those folk who don't have the mental stability or the will to handle the mage talent then yes templars need to step in. To me though the templars have way to much paranoia instilled in them against all mages.  I especially found this true when I started playing as a mage.  My dalish elf and human noble had similiar opinions but in my games I never desecrated the Ashes. My own sense of self worth and honor I give my character would not stoop to such pettiness.

The worst reason to go to war or persecute a group of people is over religion or culture. In religious war, persecutions or crusades there are no winners, only losers and senseless casualties..........

I hate the people who blindly follow without so much as a question or even a thought that something involving it could be wrong. Much like Real life.

However I dont hate it, or any real religions. Just blind followers.

Thats an extreme generalisation. Also please dont from insult the real life church directly in this thread. It leads to arguments and I'd like to keep this to a discussion

The way things seem to be going, Maybe the return of worship of the old gods will happen... I mean Morrigan says great change is coming to the world. Umtheriel has been saved from his corruption.. well for most people.

I dont know how to feel about it though should it happen.. Would be kinda cool I guess
