This never happened in the first 50 hours of play, but recently the game has been switching me back to the desktop. It can happen when I quicksave and occasionally when clicking on an icon in the interface. This has only started to happen since I created a second game/character, but it doesnt seem that that should have caused any problems. It is not a big deal because I can just click the DAO on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and it pops right back to the game, but I am missing a bit of whatever is happening, including cutscenes now and then. Another first was an attempt to Resume that failed due to an apparently corrupted save file.
The game was so stable for the first 50 hours or so, but now little problems seem to be cropping up. Could this have anything to do with the "memory leak" I see being discussed in other threads?

do you have AVG 9.0? Lots of people are going on about a memory leak because it makes them sound smarter. I would estimate that 90% of "memory leaks" posted here are actually problems with the thread handling on peoples' processors. My figures are based on the days of troubleshooting I've been doing and I have verified over a dozen CPU's that are fixed just by setting CPU affinity... if you can fix it with affinity; it ain't a leak

Yes it dawned on me that I had installed AVG 9.0 upgrade after a week or so of play, so that may very well be the problem. I recall that AVG once removed a file that was necessary to run WoW, causing thoudands of players to be unable to run the game a while back.
The alt/tab thing is still happening though. Is there a fix for it? Or better still, maybe AVG will put a fix in an update....

This started for me with the installation of AVG 9.0
Have since uninstalled AVG and once I have time will test DAO to see if the minimising thing is still happening.

AVG 9 has been doing this to me as well. One tip was to uninstall it and re-install, because in case of an update from 8 it didn't clean up properly. I have yet to confirm if it still does minimize my games (looks OK so far).

This is why I always tell people that have a problem with their games crashing....make sure you turn off any programs running in the background.
There is absolutely no need to have any AV programs running when you are playing a single player game.

Ad-Aware seems to be ok. It's quite a good virus checker and doesn't seem to interrupt play.

I tried turning AVG antivirus off--that seems to solve the alt/tab problem--so apparently that was what was causing it. They have a "game mode" which I had turned on, but I was getting dumped back to the desktop even with that on.

You can turn off Resident Shield, which is the anti-virus part of AVG. I think it is under Advanced Settings.....
I have had mixed results turning it off....still getting some alt/tab issues both with RS on and with it turned off. Gah....annoying but especially if it happens during combat!

Does this happen when playing in a Window? I have instant messengers open, and the game would minimize from full-screen whenever an IM window would open. Doesn't do that in a window even if the IM grabs focus.

I'm getting the exact same problem.....minimizing to desktop, no crashing but still able to jump back in the game. Quite annoying really. I'll have to try the disabling avg 9.0 method.

I uninstalled AVG 9.0 entirely, and the problem is solved! Thank you forum......Now, to find another free anti-virus program out there. Any suggestions for a new AV, or tweaks I could make on AVG 9.0?

I tried playing DAO when not logged in to Bioware net. That seems to work--still have AVG--hard to beat a good and free antivirus program. As I recall, AVG did something funky to WoW some time ago that would not allow users to log into the game. I think they misidentified a file--fmod?--as a virus and quarantined it! You can bet that affected quite a few of us....heh....
The only other game I have played since AVG 9.0 is Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper--and it takes that game to the desktop occasionally too. I keep thinking AVG will put in a fix...or is it hoping?

I switched from AVG to Avast, because AVG dropped coverage for anything from Microsoft older than WindowsXP, and found that I greatly preferred Avast, no matter which Windows I was running.
