Miranda and Samara, largely for personal story-related reasons.

1) Both are strong female characters, something my maleShep respects

2) I expected them to act as the voices of my paragon/renegade conscience and they did so (with TIM throwing in his two bits).

3) Miranda's squad-wide damage bonus.

4) Was under the impression that soldier types like Garrus, Zaeed, Grunt and Jacob, backed by good techs (Legion, Kasumi, Tali) and Jack's destructive biotics would put up a good fight holding the line.

5) Sent Mordin back with the crew first chance I got, as I always felt him to be more important as a science officer than a fighter.

Based on a brief look back throught this thread Miranda, Garrus and Thane seem to be the most popular choices. Glad to see that there are also a lot of people like me who take people based on the story.

Miranda and Samara are my squad mates at all times except for when I need Samara to take the long walk; Thane takes Samara's place at the point. Tali or Legion go through the vents. Garrus is first fire team leader, Jacob is second. Mordin goes back with the crew. Miranda and Samara again with me to fight the Reaper.

I usually take Thane and Mordin. It's the best way I've found to keep people from dying. Also Thane's warp is good against the collector's armor and barriers, and Mordin has INCINERATE.

On my normal play throughs, Tali and Garrus. On insanity, Grunt and, well i haven;t picked my second one yet because I am to lazy to finish it on insanity

Mordin Escorts.
Jack on biotic bubble duty.
Garrus leads the distraction team.
Miranda and Thane/Samara tags along for the final showdown.

Vanguard Shep:

Techie: Tali (Trusts and respects her as expert engineer as well as LI)

Fire Team 1: Garrus (What happened to team not his fault, able to pull off levels of badassery equivalent to Shep before resurrection, etc., etc., etc.)

Bubble shield: Samara (Been training in biotic combat since before anybody else on the team was born, more well-adjusted than the topless wonder with all that implies)

Fire Team 2: Garrus (see Fire Team 1)

Escorting crew: Mordin (can hold off multiple enemies converging on a vulnerable group, trained in sneaking missions, hates 'holding the line')

Human reaper squad: Miranda (keep an eye on her, loyalty power kills Collectors dead second only to Warp Ammo) and Tali (shields can only do so much, she brings Chiktikka along to help)

Story: Miranda is (my) Canon Shep LI and resigns from Cerberus. Thane's dying, joined mission gratis. Shep gives him his chance to "make the galaxy a better place".

This and Garrus leads fire team, Shepard trusts him because he knows what happened to Garrus's old team is not his fault. Tali is sent into shafts and Mordin back to ship with survivors.

Added bonus, pick Samara as Biotic Specialist and send Jack back with Normandy crew. Garrus will lead Hold the Line and Mordin will survive.

My Shep always take Jack because he always names Miranda as the second team leader. It avoids snubbing Miranda, who wants to be a team leader, and having to put Jack under her command.

Garrus and Tali - been with them from start to finish and some of the only current SMs I trust.
Gameplay wise? Don't care, I do most of the work by myself.

I always take - surprise! - Miranda with me. She's my trusted second-in-command and my LI, and there's nothing more satisfying as standing side by side with her against the greatest threats of the galaxy. The second team member is most often Jacob but sometimes Kasumi or Samara.

"Standard" roles for people:

Tech specialist: Tali. I've used Legion and Kasumi, but Tali feels most natural here.
Fire Team Leader: Garrus. I don't like it, but taking Miranda and Jacob with me leaves no other option.
Biotic specialist: Samara if I don't want anyone to die, non-loyal Jack otherwise.
Distraction Team Leader: Jacob. I usually take Miranda + my token sacrifice with me.
Final boss: Miranda and Jacob
Token sacrifice: Garrus, Grunt or Zaeed in my canon playthroughs, but I try to vary.
