Oh no... just think of the horrible jokes that would arise from that.

I don't like the naming system either. Emperor Shepard will have to switch it up a bit.

I was rather fond of naming the SR-2 SSV San Jacinto, myself.

Well its better than naming your ship "Forward Unto Dawn" or "The Pillar of Autumn" because despite sounding bad ass, they make like no sense.

What Bioware could do, and of course ****** a lot of people off is name frigates after battles they EXPECT to see in the future. YEAH OFFENDING PEOPLE!

In a story I wrote, a U.S. ship is titles the U.S.S. Straights of Hormuz and another is called the U.S.S. Chongjin (North Korea's biggest harbor)

Personally I am somewhat fond of how the Royal Navy names many of their ship classes.

Shepard: The SSV Ishimura! Nothing can go wrong with a name like that!

While the SSV Chuck Norris would be an amazing ship, who decides who qualifies as "great leaders, artists, or intellectuals." There is so much potential for damned awful names.

SSV "If you can read this you're already dead"

SSV "Atatatatattatatatatatatatatatatataatata!!!!"

Nah, seriously...There's nothing really...wrong with the names used. Military likes to have naming conventions. But I do agree that ships can sound more badass.

There's a reason why all action heroes have badass names...Dick Steele. Sledge Hammer. Col. Matrix. General Mortars. John Rambo.....

Bob Strakowski just doesn't sound intimidating...

SSV Justin Bieber would play "Baby" during each fight and win all of them, the enemies going deaf. Hm... intelligent tactic, I approve this.

Also, latest news... SSV Chuck Norris was sent at the edge of the galaxy, where it encountered marching Reapers. Now, it seems that the Reapers acknowledge SSV Chuck Norris as their supreme god.

As stated above they need to take a leaf out of The Royal Navy's book.

SSV Dauntless
SSV Vengeance
SSV Triumph
SSV Colossus
SSV Warspite

Ect.

Or for a bit of fun have a small cruiser called SSV Nick Clegg who's captain betrays the Alliance and defects to the Reapers :)

I would love to see a frigate named the SSV Marathon (as a nod to the Marathon games by Bungie).

SSV Chuck Norris

That ship wouldn't have a mass accelerator as it's main weapon, it would have a beard on the bow and a giant FIST would shoot out of it.

SSV Bieber on the other hand would be like the worst kind of reverse indoctrination.  Turn a reaper to a husk.

Technically the Fuhrer was all of those a great leader , a great artist and a great intellectual.

So he should definatly get his own ship.

No. Just no.

The current names are perfect. Mass Effect is a game for adults, not kids. gb2/ff13

EDIT: And this is only aimed at OP and those who agree with him. SSV Justin Bieber is actually lulzworthy.

The Royal Navy is for kids?  I'm not asking for the SSV Extreme Awesome Destructor 3000.

Look at, for example the order of battle at Trafalgar.  Both the French and English have pretty good names, if a bit heavy on the classical mythology.

I misunderstood you, then. My apologies.

But which one of those names do you consider appropriate for Mass Effect? A problem with mythologial starship names is that they are used a lot in astronomy already. Having SSV Achilles go beyond the Perseus Veil or SSV Hades landing on one of Neptune's moons would just be too much.

And while not childish or tacky, the problem with some of the other names is that they represent people or things important in national cultures. They are therefore highly nationalistic. The Systems Alliance, on the other hand, was always very anti-nationalistic and not seriously regarded until 2157, when they liberated Shanxi and proved they were more effective than nation states/coalitions at dealing with the outside world. It's, therefore, understandable that they'd want to avoid names that had nationalistic connotations. The only carrier we know is named after Einstein, who is definitely not associated with German culture. Also, cities and mountains are also less likely to be considered nationalistic. I'll admit that naming something after a battle might rouse some emotions, but it's more likely that battles fought centuries ago are considered a part of our shared culture and not really controversial. Think of Thermopylae or Actium.

As for the conceptual names like Revenge or Defence, they're too Star Wars-y and would definitely fit something like that better. Mass Effect at least tries to look a little more like harder scifi and having names that convey emotions just doesn't fit the aesthetics. You might call the names of ships boring, but the same could be said about the name "Mass Effect" as well. It's supposed to appeal to that nerdy part of your brain that likes some of that dry, techy stuff, and really it's just the whole aesthetic direction of the franchise, although I'll admit that visually ME2 took a step in the other direction.
