Because I'm bored at work....from memory so I will likely miss stuff....This is spoiler city...and focuse moslty on plot points.
The Stolen Throne:
The Orleasians have stolen the throne.
Maric watches his mom, the rightful queen of Ferelden who has been leading a rebellion get betrayed and killed. He runs away, and meets up with Loghain who reluctantly saves him. Loghains family and friends pretty much get slaughtered and Loghain is told by his father to run and protect Maric. They get lost in the Koricari wilds, and meet Morrigans mom, who tells Maric that Loghain will betray him and that a Blight is coming to Ferelden but he will not live to see it.
Loghain and Maric meet up with Rowan who is a warrior girl and is betrothed to Maric. Rowans dad lead the leftover rebel army. Loghain and Rowan like each other. Loghian sticks around and is a great strategist and they win some battles.
An elf bard Katriel is sent to spy/eventually kill/capture Maric. Maric being a dolt saves falls for her. She gives Maric bad info and he basically sends his army into a trap with Rowans dad dying. Maric, Loghain, Rowan and Katriel escape into the Deep Roads underground to as a way to avoid the army that is hunting them. They run into some Dwarfs down there who Maric enlists. They emerge from the Deep Roads. Katriel is revealed as a spy, and Maric kills her in rage. Then he and Loghain arrange a meeting with the Arls who betrayed his mom, to discuss an alliance, but really what they do is kill all of them in a brutal fashion. Loghain leads a battle at River Dane and fend off the Orleaisans. While Maric finds the wizard who had hired Katriel (it turns out she loved him too, and provided and knowing she would likely die left info for Maric to find him) and kills him.
In the end even though Loghain and Rowan are in love, she marries Maric for the good of the kingdom. Loghain is made an Lord or something. In the epilogue Maric has a kid Calian, and Rowan dies of a mysterious illness. Maric has lost his innocence from early in the book and is left doing what he feels is his responsibility.
The CallingThis takes place after Rowan has died, but still 17-18 years before the game.
Duncan is a grey warden. He was conscripted 6 months before this book starts. Grey Warden's fight the darkspawn. In order to gain immunity from the taint they drink darkspawn blood. Eventually after some time, the taint takes over and rather have it consume them they enter the Deep Roads and kill as many darkspawn as possible before dying. This is "The Calling". Blights are started when the Darkspawn are able to find the "Old Gods" who are dragons that are imprisoned underground. This desire to find them leads them to constantly dig and search.
Bregan is the former leader of the Grey Wardens, and has embarked on his Calling. But for some reason he is not killed, but taken captive by a sentient Darkspawn named the Architect. The Architect has some interesting ideas about how to end the Blight.
Bregan's sister Genevieve now leading a group of the Grey Wardens wants to rescue him before the Darkspawn gain important information from him. Grey Wardens were kicked out of Ferelden a few centuries ago, but she seeks either Maric or Loghain to guide them through the Deep roads, as they have traveled through them. Loghain tells them to shove it, but Maric goes around his back and pretty much runs away with the Wardens on this mission.
Duncan ( a rogue) is put in charge of watching Maric. The Wardens have a bunch an assortment of interesting chracters. Of note a Dwarf Utha who is specialized in hand to hand combat. an Elf mage Fiona who thinks Maric is a dolt, a ranger guy with a cool Dog Hafter, and 2 gay warriors.
They stop off at the Mage's tower for some directions and some potions to protect Maric from the Taint. They are also given some pendants that will hide them from the Darkspawn detection. While there Duncan gets bored and steals a nifty magical black dagger. They enter the Deep Roads.
Basically the rest of the book is them in the Deep Roads intercut with Bregan talking with the Architect. Bregan' starts to become more and more like a darkspawn, and the architect speeds up his tranformation. The architect has a hairbrained scheme to basically have the whole earth drink the darkspawn blood, and also kill of the Old Gods (who are dragons) that are hidden underground to prevent future blights from happening. The people who survive drinking the darkspawn will become a weird sort of 1/2 human 1/2 darkspawn and the darkspawn will no longer want to kill them. Bregan is convinced to help the architect. I'm sure I just did a horrible job explaining it.
So on their journey Genevieve and her band of Grey Wardens run into some problems. losing some members of their team along the way. They fight a Dragon, get duped into entering the Fade and end up fighting a demon. The Grey Wardens except Duncan notice that the taint is starting to grow in their bodies at an faster rate. Meanwhile Maric and Fiona (whats with him and elves) get frisky. Genevive is a bit of a nut herself and wants to continue on this suicide mission. One night while on watch she runs off and is found and joins up with Bregan. The rest of the group is captured, and Bregan tries to recruit them. Utha joins, but Maric, Fiona, Duncan and the ranger guy I can't remember his name and his dog refuse. They escape with the Ranger guy and Hafter valiantly giving up their lives for Maric, Fiona and Duncan, who eventually make it topside, where they are are captured by the Mages.
It turns out a mage who was Orlesian was contacted by the ARchitect and was in cahoots with them, and when he saw a chance to capture Maric he took it, he held a coup and took over the tower. . The Architect and others go to the mage tower and at that point Loghain shows up to wage war on the tower and get rid of the bad mages. Bregan learns the truth of the Architect's intentions, he and Genevive change sides but both in the end get destroyed. Utha and the architect escape. Duncan, Maric and Fiona kill the head mage. It turns out that magice dagger Duncan stole protected him from the effects of the Architect. Loghian shows up to tell Maric he is a dolt.
Maric returns home, and invites the Grey Wardens back into the country. A year or so passes and Duncan has returned as part of the Grey Wardens stationed in Ferelden. He is 2nd in command. Fiona is there too. but has a different purpose she is delivering a baby, Maric's son. She cannot keep him so Duncan arranges that he will keep an eye on him, and he will be raised in Ferelden w/o knowledge of his royal lineage.
The End
As I said before I'm sure I've missed stuff, but its the basics of the plots. You really should read the book, they aren't bad, and read pretty quickly. I'm surprised I've retained as much as I did from them.
