A couple times while watching movies/reading books, yeah. But when they DID die, I felt bad, like it was my fault.
I'm kind of a sissy like that.
Bah!
Nothing beats seeing annoying characters getting maimed or killed, too bad it rarely happens!
Well yeah. Sorry. Bad comparison. Applies to me since I'm a horrible perfectionist and an achievement wh*re, but I see your point. However, ME is still a game in which you are the main character, and not some sort of novel you plan on publishing. You can get away with breaking the rules of a good ending since you're the only one experiencing it. Butterflies and rainbows are perfectly legit since no one's going to fly in and tell everyone that you're a horrible author. (In theory, anyway. The BSN has proven me wrong, on this as well as many other things.)
Additionally, killing off select squadmates is pretty damn easy - it's the same equation as getting everyone out alive, but you plug in different variables. Seriously, in my "Shepard dies" save (which was largely for teh lulz), I could have easily survived had I not sent Jacob in the vents and upgraded the ship plating. Whoo, two seconds of game time for a completely different result!
I guess what I should have said was that it doesn't make sense from both a metagaming and roleplaying perspective, at least to me. Why cheat yourself out of future content? Can you imagine ME3 with ten Wreavs? I have nightmares thinking about it.
Anyway, yeah. I've got a lot of reasons as to why I think killing off squadmates is dumb, but thankfully I have control over my own game, while you get to play yours. Thus, you are in no danger of me forcing you to adopt my opinion, since I can go save [Squadmate] every single time while you cackle gleefully as (s)he gets carried away by robotic death-bees.
I guess it all boils down to you caring enough about all the characters that you wouldn't mind seeing them return, while I have a strong dislike (to say the least) about certain characters that I enjoy letting them get impaled by a giant metal beam or burnt to a crisp by a laser. And recieve a Wreave like cameo in ME3 as my reward for a job well done. And in the end, losing people on the suicide mission just makes the story feel better, make more sense and more meaningful.
And on a final note:
as a commander, why would you make such stupid decisions? Even if you
don't like a certain member of your crew, would you honestly just write
them off when they're a prefectly good soldier?
To begin with. It was me, the hand of god directing the story that killed off certain characters at will, not my Shepard! My Shepard didn't hate his crew (execpt Jack), and he didn't get them killed on purpose. It was just a tragedy that the Normandy wasn't fully upgrades due to economical problems.

I'll admit I like to kill off companions for drama's sake (only if I can do it in character though)
But
I can't help but think that the people who deliberately ignore a
companion and then kill them off because they dislike them are
completely childish.
I really hate Miranda, but I wouldn't want to kill her off in the SM.
Why?
Because it's good to have someone on your team that you hate and have conflict with.
It creates drama.
Drama is good.
There's two type of characters you hate.
The first is the one you love to hate. This is often villains or morally questionable characters that you oppose. Characters such TIM, Morinth, Udina and Zaeed. The second types is characters you hate because you feel they are poorly written, boring, annoying, pointless, cliche, etc.
The presence of the first type creates tension and drama. The presence of the latter however, creates annoyance and frustation.

Cry Metagaming all you want, but there comes a point where playing ME2 stops and creating the backstory for ME3 starts.
I have seven playthroughs, all with varying results:
2 with no casualties
Mordin, Thane, Jack, Zaeed, Kasumi dead
Miranda, Thane, Samara, Jacob, Jack dead
Mordin, Kasumi, Jack, Tali dead
Kasumi, Miranda, Zaeed, Jacob dead
Samara, Jacob, Zaeed dead

I once killed Jedore off on purpose
I will wait and see what repercussions this will have in ME 3
Doesn't Jedore die anyway?
I... yeah, I don't know of any way to get around killing Jedore. You never even get the option to negotiate with her. Methinks me smells a joke.

Thane on the ship, Kasumi at the door, Garrus with the seekers and Samara with the second fire team. Not out of any ill will, of course, but to make my story more to my liking. Cry Metagaming all you want, but there comes a point where playing ME2 stops and creating the backstory for ME3 starts.
Agreed, the person that created the term metagaming sucks.

And it wasn't all that easy to do, because I wanted all the upgrades for the ship...
All in all, it's a realistic playthrough - it was a suicide mission after all!

I just want her off my team, but that would have me sacrifice someone else, so I guess she'll have to die as well.

I never kill anyone off on purpose because I want to see everyone's story arc. There are a couple of characters I'm not so keen on, but I may start to like them in ME3, you never know...

My first playthough, Grunt and Miranda died. Which was terrible, I liked grunt.
I HATE Miranda. I thought Jacob was okay, sure he didn't have the 'troubled dude' appeal but damn, is Miranda a snooty ****.

I do have a "gigantic jerk" Shepard where I tried to get as many squadmates killed as possible. Ashley, Liara, Tali, and Morinth are the only ones left... should be interesting in ME3.

After losing his entire team on Akouze, and leaving Ash to die on Virmire, my Shep would probably break down and curl up in a ball in the corner of the captain's quarters bathroom.
