Do you feel that a status update of Dragon Age Legends from Dark beta to Closed beta made it an important date for Dragon Age fans?

No. But neither is a demo. More than likely, 2.1.11 was the original launch date for DA2.

You don't think a demo release would be an important date for Dragon Age fans???
That's ... odd.

Alodar

Except, no demo was released today.

Nor was a demo announced today.

So, ummm, yea . . .card was meaningless.

Man, would have loved to have sat through the negotiating between Gamestop and EA. How the hell did a 23 day exclusive demo to Gamestop employees end up in the agreement.

But, as it is available for Gamestop employees it is clearly ready.
It could have been announced today, except that someone in EA decided to grant Gamestop a 23 day exclusive.
When that was made exclusive is what I'm curious about.

As in did BioWare have the rug pulled out from under them at the last second and were forced to announce a status change from dark to closed as their big announcement.

No. I don't think a demo requires the creation of millions of pieces of paper showcasing an ambiguous date. It's simply not big enough to warrant that kind of attention. Plus, the devs probably don't know when or if a demo will hit. A forecasted release date for their next game, however....

Also remember, 2/1/2011 is a Tuesday which is the day of the week games are released in the US.  Just like 3/8/2011.

I originally assumed the 2-1-11 was either DA2 or another expansion to DA:O (because of the old "EA plans to support DA:O with DLC and expansions for 2 years" statement thing) when I got Awakenings.

Oh well, it's just marketing and scheduling tried to do a two-person potato sack race, lost their rythm and hit a brick wall.  Not the first time a company has ever done this.

That's actually pretty clever on Bioware's part. If Gamestop employees have Dragon Age on the brain, they are more likely to recommend the game to random customers who ask for a recommendation. End result is more sales and anticipation spread by word of mouth.

Seriously, what gamer worth their salt asks for recommendations from.... GAMESTOP EMPLOYEES!?!?

When I go to a game store, I know exactly what I want, why I want it, how much it should be, what extras I should be getting, etc.

So, you're going with "Bioware put a card in everyone's box of Awakening to let them know that a demo available only to employees of gamestop would begin on 2/1/11, but not be announced by BIoware to the general public"?

yes, it's ready - but not for us.  Nor did Bioware announce it.  They chose to announce that DA:L is still in beta testing.  They could have at least said "there will be a demo, more info to follow".

Even that wouldn't have merited that card, IMO.

At least there wasn't a random NPC in the Castle in Awakening with an annoying, glowing exclamation point above his head who said, when spoken to and over and over, "2-1-2010! 2-1-2010!"

Here's my current theory.
BioWare works on demo in good faith to release it to general public.
Norwegian/Danish sites jump the gun and put Demo now available to public.
EA negotiates exclusive window for Game Stop employees.
Norwegian/Danish sites pulled down.
BioWare is informed with no time to recover.
Are forced to use lame Dark to Closed update, but can't speak against their parent company.

BioWare looks bad but EA gets whatever they get from exclusive deal with GameStop.

There will be a small statue of Old Tegrin following you every 2 steps or so doing that, but for the date of the closed beta to another facebook game and an early footage only avaiable to bioware employees.

'You shouldn't have done that'

Well, I'll say this:

If true, Bioware devs have lost any shred of credibility.

Why?
If my wild speculation is true then BioWare acted in good faith.
It doesn't matter how noble you are, however if your bosses say you can't release something, then you can't release it.

Multinational corporation has many, many divisions across many countries speaking different languages. Organization on that level is already complex, made worse by ego-driven and mildly incompetent mid-level management which believes information should only flow on a "need to know" basis. Global crosstalk and mass confusion ensues, nobody knows what anyone else is saying and different divisions begin contradicting each other, and nobody knows who is actually in charge or who can say anything authoritatively.

That's 2.1.11 in a nutshell. This is what mid to high level management failure looks like.

Well, either they intended to announce the demo, and now can't - in which case, we can never know when they'll be stopped from giving us info again, or

they never intended to announce the demo, and let us speculate wildly for no reason.

Which would make them no different from you or I. I can promise good things to my client but if my boss changes her mind and tells me I can't release something, it means I can't release something.

Doesn't make me untrustworthy, just means that sometimes having bosses bites.

Bioware makes a good game in the industry, has the worst P.R./Customer Relations in the industry.

I guess you can't win at it all.

And it makes you look like an idiot in the public's eye when the information slips out anyway, while the person who made the decision sits in their office with the door closed sipping a latte and playing Peggle.

I'd rather not speculate in this manner, whatever internal drama they have is their business.

How did you know my boss likes playing Peggle?

Actually I think the revelation of the GameStop exclusive puts BioWare in an extremely positive light and makes everything that happened to make sense, at least to me.

I'm not at all interested in playing a demo so this whole to-DA-2-demo-or-not-to-DA-2-demo broo-ha-ha is a moot issue for me. I expect to have the game in hand on March 8 and to be playing it without any limitations that a demo would impose.

Whatever happened, Bioware are a bunch of chumps for letting EA buy them out.  We should get a pool going on how many years it takes for them to be shutdown by EA.

A Gamestop employee exclusive demo?  Beyond retarded.  EA says, "meh, we couldn't get a Signature Edition deal done with Steam (the largest online retailer) but we did smoke some crack and negotiated this deal!"  Isn't Gamestop the place that lives on it's used game sales, something EA abhors?!   How do these morons get high level executive jobs, nepotism?

I findthe GameStop exclusive pretty mystifying as well.

However, EA is a double edged sword. BioWare gets more money and better advertising for their games, but money comes with strings attached.
