So I just beat Mass Effect 1 (again) about ten minutes ago. After I beat it, I put in the Bonus disc that comes with the Platinum edition. Both of these (beating the game and the Bonus Disc content), showed me some things about Mass Effect 1 that were overlooked or were generally disregarded.

First:
Virmire - Where is the rest of your team? Kaiden is at the bomb, Ashley is helping out the Salarians, and two are with you. Where are the other two? I took Wrex and Garrus with me, and I couldn't help but wonder what the heck Liara and Tali were doing while Kaiden was getting up the bomb (all the salarians needed was Ashley to communicate with Shepard). Why would the rest of your team provide backup for another team member? Are they playing an intense game of chess in the engine room? This is a major plot hole, and if the two other team members had been there to help Kaiden when the geth land, there wouldn't have to be a choice.

How this relates to Mass Effect 2: Everyone on the shuttle! Let's go into space with nothing to do so we couldn't prevent a surprise attack that could be easily avoided with common sense!

Second:
On the bonus Disc, there is an Art Gallery. In it, they are numerous concepts of weapons, ship, and most importantly, human helmets. Why? Because of one of the comments the artist (who talks a bit about each picture, and what happened to it) has something very interesting to say about one of the helmets. See, this particular helmet was supposed to go with the Heavy Armor, as they were planning on doing armor-class-specific helmets. But that didn't happen because the Heavy Armor helmet had a full visor, which got in the way of facial animations. Seriously. The animators wanted their work to be seen, so the artists scrapped the idea in favor of a more open helmet.

How this relates to Mass Effect 2:
The whole thing about non-removable helmets. Apparently the animators stopped caring about their work being seen.

Just some interesting things I noticed in Mass Effect.

First: WHAT?! ME1 had a PLOTHOLE?! D8

Second: Either that or the designers and animators had an arm-wrestling tournament, and the designers won.

This is a major plot hole, and if the two other team members had been there to help Kaiden when the geth land, there wouldn't have to be a choice.

You're misusing the term. It's not a plot-hole, it's missing information. It was an attack on a base, things did not go smoothly. There was a chance either the rest of your team or non-Bomber simply got caught out of position. You'll note not all of the Salarians survive, either. Also, simply because the rest of your party is there does not make non-Bomber invulnerable. They can still get shot in the face.

You're only saying this because you know an attack occurs. If you were on your ship and the AI said, "Hey, use the shuttle to move your team this time so I can calibrate this thing," you're not thinking, "This will leave the ship [full of a capable crew, some of which are former Alliance soldiers] vulnerable to a surprise attack!" You're thinking, "Okay."

The animators wanted their work to be seen, so the artists scrapped the idea in favor of a more open helmet.

Art design is very important for immersion. The helmet can be removed in ME2, and there are more helmets which don't hide the face than there are ones which do.

I can think of only 3-4 (including DLC here) which hide the face.

I can think of 4-5 (including DLC) which don't.

Also, thanks for posting spoilers in the NO SPOILERS forum...

Seeing as you got the bonus disc with commentary, can you upload it to Youtube? If not, I understand. See, I bought ME2 Collectors' Edition and the bonus disc sucked and I only got a vanilla version of ME1 and its bonus discs (Limited Edition and Platinum Hits version) actually had awesome bonus content.

I second that this is missing info rather than a plot hole.

Not like you were leaving the ship defenceless, there are other soldiers on the ship.  I don't really count this as a plot hole I just think it wasn't implemented as well as it could have been. They should have actually had you do a mission even if it was only something very short and had the collector attack occur just after you had completed it so it didn't feel like you just left for no damn reason and then came back.

Well you don't have to wear the helmets and not all of them cover your whole face. though yes it tis rather annoying there is no helmet toggle

First:

That's why I consider the SM in ME2 an improvement and hope for the same in ME3 - it actually uses all of your squad. Or in DA:O. I certainly hope it gets into consideration while developing the last part of the trilogy.

Good that you finally noticed. Now that we are all on the same page, shall we kill this thread?

Yeah, I was wondering about the helmet issue.

I think that, after ME1, they just stopped caring if the helmet is hiding the facial animations.

I had wondered the same thing. Why couldn't (in your case, for example) Liara and Tali go help Kaidan out?! In all seriousness, yes, those are two very noteworthy flaws.
