Why Did We Leave Someone Behind on Virmire?

1. Have enough time to save both.
Why did we just have barely enough time to pick up one? Hasn't anyone heard of remote detonation? Or just pick a reasonable timer for the bomb, not a "barely long enough" one(same with every timed bomb set by shepard)!
2. Send the other two squaddies!
As pointed out by others.

1). Save Ashley
2). Save Kaiden
3). Save both
Then everybody would choose (3) and nobody would even remember Virmire.

1. The nuke was made out of a drive core, it wasn't a precision device with a remote detonator.
They rigged it to detonate in a short time, so the geth/krogan/Saren/whatever can't simply walk over it and flip the big red button titled 'switch off'. If they could rig a raw device to explode, I guess it could've worked the same way to disable it, and that's the reason behind the small window of opportunity.
2. It wouldn't make much difference, it would've been three lost squadmates lost then.
But all of these are just guesswork, the point of that scene was to force us to make a decision, to emphasise that we aren't untouchable, and to make it clear that this war have a heavy price to pay.

But when you are going to the AA tower to pull that group out, the one at the bomb activates the timer. So there is not enough time.
The only odd thing is that, despite the timer ticking and the other companion dying at the other site, you still can chat Saren up on quite a few questions...

Apparently devs lost little creativity (and not for the first time...) in that particular part... but at least the gave me chance to say sayonara to Kaidan Onasi once for all.

Pretty much this.

I think the reason they did this was so that they didn't have so much work to do. They would have had to create three story lines (one if Kaidan lives, one if Ashley lives and one if they both live). That's alot of extra dialogue to think up and extra drawing to do. I think the devs just got lazy that's all.

Usually i took to AA tower (before Geth shows up on bomb site) Tali and Liara so Garrus and Wrex are still "free to go" so i ponder many times why i can't tell them to go at the bomb site and fend off Geth until i get back there with AA team.
I don't think the issue is you can't cover both of them (you could) but that there isn't enough time to clear both sites, have the Normandy do a pickup at each, and get to a safe distance before the bomb goes.

I dunno....I think people would still have chosen to kill someone off. I mean, how many people have played the game more than once....I think people would have tried out all possibilities.

Killing one of them of just to see what happens or saving both wouldnt be a hard choice. It's not laziness it is supposed to be a dramatic scene and one that you will remember and impact your game.
The bomb was set off to early, because the geth were attacking the bomb site. There was no time to clear both sites especially with Saren attacking. You hear the warning siren while Saren holds Shep by the throat, and thats why he leaves after Shep punches himself free.
The other two squadmates maybe already boarded the ship getting ready to take off and pick everyone up, i'm not sure I just got there again in my current playthrough so I'll pay attention to where the normandy is. You kind of have to ignore the extra squaddies though, the only reason they aren't with you is the two squadmate mechanic, or I'd have my whole squad with me on tough missions!

HALO REACH SPOILERS!1
Same thing occured to me while playing thourgh halo reach. When Geroge died, why coulden't they have left a marine to arm the slipspace bomb instead of one of the best soldiers on the battlefield.

I like that you couldn't get through Mass Effect without making a sacrifice. I wouldn't enjoy Virmire as much as I do if Kaidan and Ashley could both survive. Being forced to leave behind one of the two characters, along with a few other scenes, makes Virmire 10 times more dramatic than the suicide mission in Mass Effect 2.
Agree with you 100%

I just wish it wouldn't have to be between those two. I could choose between Garrus/Liara/Wrex/Tali, but both Ashley and Kaidan are such awesome characters. I hate to lose either of them.

This. Unfortuanetly there wasn't a leave Kaidan and Ashley beside the nuke and go rescue Garrus/Liara/Tali/Wrex and Kirrahe,

That may very well be the first time I have heard someone say that. Well, not heard, but you know what I mean. In my limited circle, Ashley/Kaidan are nearly universally despised. A couple of us like Ashley, I don't think anyone likes Kaidan.
I'll say it?
Kaidan and Ashley are my favorite Mass Effect characters. I would have left anyone else behind except them, given the choice.
That said, I can appreciate Virmire from a dramatic standpoint. It certainly had an impact on me.

I will agree with this. I am an Ash fan. She is my favorite character bioware has ever made, but I love Kaidan too. ( look bioware I can spell ) I would rather have them then any other characters , period.FireEye wrote...
