It's kind of funny actually. I mean I know it can't be true, but it's almost like EA wants the DA franchise to fail. They have had the worst marketing I've ever seen... consistently. As they say, "Once is an Accident, twice is a Coincidence, and three times is a Pattern." I think we're well passed three times. LOL

I didn't particularly condone the marketing from DAO. And it did well. The numbers will tell.

For the record, I don't really like how the marketing team has handled things.

But one has to wonder whether Origins did well because of the marketing or in spite of it?

Certainly, I may have DA2 preordered, but it sure as hell isn't because the marketing has sold me on it. Its because Origins was a great game.

All the marketing they need is a facebook game in closed beta.

What's with the 2/1/2011 banners?

Obviously something was planned for that date way back when Awakening came out. (Awakening came with ads displaying that date.)

Perhaps it was the expected release date of Dragon Age 2, and it got pushed back.

Whatever it was, the plans obviously fell through. Sure they annoucned the start of Dragon Age Legends closed beta test, but that hardly warrents an ad in Awakening and I doubt they had the beta schedule for DA Legends planned all the way back then.

The good thing that comes out of this is that I know if things go badly for me at work, I have a fall back plan. I can always put in my resume with DA2's marketing department. I mean, I know next to nothing about marketing. I should fit right in!

This is so weird to me! I mean, I'm not doubting you, but I read/watched almost everything official except the leaked codex pages in the week before release, and I didn't even know the Wardens got wiped out at Ostagar when I got the game in hand.

That was the first time I followed a game, so I scavanged all the four corners of the internet for any sort of info. DACentral? Daily visit.
I also remember some website releasing ALL OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS, complete with descriptions.

So. . .yeah. I'm glad Bioware's trying to temper what they, and other game sites, release this time around. Though. . .I still really want to hear LadyHawke, and I'm sure small things like that which are not at all spoilery, yet dear to people's hearts, Bioware could do a better job at making available.

What do we know about "Dragon Age II", which makes this game an inferior product:
~ The game will be drastically shorter than "Dragon Age: Origins".
~ You can only be a human male or female.
~ Your NPC companions will only have one or two pieces of personal gear; therefore, you cannot switch around gear to maximize the effectiveness of your party.

If you think about those limitations, "Dragon Age II" is an extremely inferior product to the original. Why waste the ad revenue on this game? Its not worth it.

There is some logic to what you say.  You could never get a job in their marketing department.

I'd sort of given it to the start of February to start really ramping up. This was right about where I'd gotten into DA:O, and I remember watching gameplay footage videos, character trailers for every character except Zevran and Oghren, origin trailers for all the Warden options, plot trailers for all the different locations. Everyone had guessed the VAs for most of the characters and everyone was bristling with excitement.

And let's not for THIS IS THE NEW **** and all its fallout.

I would definitely be okay with even something like that, right now. Because I still feel like I don't know anything about the characters or the Free Marches or anything other than if I press a button, something awesome is apparently going to happen.

come on, bw, where's the marketting? We're barely more than a month out, here!

Problem is, if they start overmarketing like you want them to, they'll probably start spoiling things. I mean, look at the DA:O Broodmother trailer- that was a massive spoiler.

Well, regarding marketing for Origins... I remember a video years ago, when it was just Dragon Age showing the battle of Ostagar, and it ended with the Ogre spiting in Cailan's face. At the time I assumed Cailan was the protagonist, to tell the truth. But I don't remember too much info on DA at the time. Besides, I'm so tired of reading spoilers in previews that I would rather only know the name of the game than end up reading the whole story in an article.

I'd have to say that it was a success because of the marketing.

It gave all of the console/action gamers the wrong impression of the game, leading them to believe that it was a hack and slash game. And, because they bought more copies than us Bladur's Gate fans and complained that it wasn't action-y enough, they catered the sequel to them.

Every article I see (or video on Youtube) has comments from people complaining about the combat in DA:O, about how slow and unaction-y it is, while simultaneously praising the action-y direction of the sequel, and how it is what they had hoped for when they bought Origins.

When will the "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate" side get a proper sequel? Every new piece of info I see/read for DA2 just makes me more angry towards the game and the devs, and the wrong side of the coin that they catered the game to.

I kind of agree with your philosophy. Since "Dragon Age: Origins" has already built up a massive fan-base, BioWare does not have to do anything in regards to advertising.

I still haven't played origins yet. I've played it on my friends PC and loved it. Already spoiled myself with the lore and the plot though. I'll order it this month. My DA2 pre order is based on that alone. But the game will not sell itself apart from people who are long term fans who played Origins.

off topic: The demo thread just got locked. hehe

People cannot be sure of the contents of a trailer if they haven't watched it. They could start viewing a trailer thinking it would merely give them a small taste of what the game will be like but then *bam* spoilers.

Inferior? One of those points is a positive for me -- not fiddling with gear. The shorter game is a neutral for me, since I'd rather have a shorter DA2 now than a longer one in six months or a year. And human-only may be a positive or a neutral, depending on how the story works.

Lol @deadmac, for me no they don't but if they want to expand their sales they do! Of course I am buying out of 'blind faith' as I haven't played a bioware game I didn't love but I am still disappointed that I haven't been able to see much to do with where my hard earned £40 is going :(

At this rate i doubt the game will come out in March. Lets lok so far we have 2 cinematic trailers and one trailer of combat thats about 30 seconds . We have a very brief description of SOME of the companions, not all have even been revealed yet. Theres basically no story that we know of, all we know is we become the champion of Kirkwall.

There marketing is terrible anyway, probably better off without it. If I wanted to see cutscenes from the game put to bad rock music I'd go to youtube.
