This game isn't going to sell 20 million copies like Modern Warfare or Halo, so I wouldn't expect it to have the heavy marketing that those games have. RPGs are a niche market. There are few niche products that have large marketing budgets.
I think you need to look up on the definition of 'niche'. Just because RPG's don't sell the same amount as major FPS realses does not consider it a niche, niche would be arcade games or games from independent developers. Anyway I except marketing to ramp up soon, obviously they didn't want to repeat the same mistake of spoling things too soon ala as they did with Origins.
They also probably don't want as burning out too quickly.
There is more than one niche market in an overarching market. So maybe its you who should be take a refresher on niche markets.

the "general public" has no freaking idea this game exists or if they do they have nothing good to say about it.. give us some hyped up gameplay, awesome tv trailer. Sales will be grateful

What do we know about "Dragon Age II", which makes this game an inferior product:eyesofastorm wrote...
It's kind of funny actually. I mean I know it can't be true, but it's almost like EA wants the DA franchise to fail. They have had the worst marketing I've ever seen... consistently. As they say, "Once is an Accident, twice is a Coincidence, and three times is a Pattern." I think we're well passed three times. LOL
~ The game will be drastically shorter than "Dragon Age: Origins".
~ You can only be a human male or female.
~ Your NPC companions will only have one or two pieces of personal gear; therefore, you cannot switch around gear to maximize the effectiveness of your party.
If you think about those limitations, "Dragon Age II" is an extremely inferior product to the original. Why waste the ad revenue on this game? Its not worth it.
Where and when was it said that DA2 will be drastically shorter than DAO?

Sure in comparison to the shooter market, then yeah sales will be considerably lower. Doesn't mean there won't be a considerable amount allocated to marketing.. it's just not not revved up yet.

That's not entirely true. There have been viewings, previews, media's been invited to the studio to try the game, etc. They've been doing stuff, just not that huge final push yet. "People" "know". Whether they care or not is a different story.

Isn't it near the top of pre-order charts? Ans has been featured in a lot of magazines. There must be quite a lot of people who don't read the forums who have pre-ordered it.

Well amount is all in perspective. Too some, their marketing budget might seem like a lot. But when you compare it to shooter games which sell 5-10x as many games, then it is obvious that their marketing budget will be much smaller. And there is no point in heavily advertising a game over a month before its release. You guys are just complaining because you want to see some gameplay footage. But the point of advertising isn't to give its biggest fans some gameplay footage over a month in advance of its release. Advertising is designed to build attention to your product at the time of its release. You blow your marketing budget before the game is release, and you are going to have a very difficult time selling the game.
In fact, most of the advertisements I saw for Black Ops were shortly before it was released, and after its release.

Honestly, I'd have no idea this game even existed if I wasn't a major Bioware fan. And I'm not sure I'd be interested if I found it. I still have really no idea what the plot for this game is. I mean not spoilers plot but what's going on. Are we fighting Qunari? Are we fighting the darkspawn? Are we fighting evil magisters? Seriously, all I really know is that I have a house, a family, and I'm going to become the hero of Kirkwall. And a dwarf is telling a story about it. Maybe I missed some stuff along the way...

As for marketing for the gaming masses, I fully expect EA to do a big marketing push for DA 2 at whatever point in the not-too-distant future they decide to kick it off.

Demo is... what, February 23rd (supposedly)? We've heard that the marketing push this time is going to be a "flood" rather than a "drip", so I'd expect a whole lot of stuff coming around that date, like catchy jingles and cats holding swords or what have you.

Heh. And when they don't kick off this supposed "big marketing push" what will you change your tune to next?
It's funny how some form of this argument is always postulated in response to any concern.
"Don't like the low res blurry textures? I am sure they will be fixed before release!"
"Don't like the flashy combat moves? I am sure they will be fixed before release!"
And it's not just this game, it's like every game ever where some players have had some concerns about what they've seen. There's no reason to believe EA/Bioware are holding back some huge flood of information (2.1.11 lol) just like there's no reason to believe the graphics we've seen aren't the mostly complete final product.

Demo is not confirmed . . . strenuously not confirmed, I might add.
As for marketing, I completely agree with PrinceofFallout13 . . . . whatever strategy there might be is baffling. Might as well wait until release date to start providing info to people.

There's no way a AAA game from a AAA publisher is going to be released without marketing. I know it's fun to say the sky is falling, but really now...

DA2 should definitely get a Super Bowl ad. Would revive interest in the game. Of course, the people who go view the ad and then buy the game aren't folks like us.
Yeah, because Dragon Age is really going to appeal to the football crowd. They'll probably become enraged and confused upon hearing an English accent, and throw their bottle of Bud Light at the television. Actually, maybe it is a good idea after all.

No one needs to say anything. Just show some ass-kicking by Hawke and a bunch of a characters. Will suffice.

I have a tough time relating to this debate. I've seen about as many gamer mag and web previews as I can stand to read about DA2; are there supposed to be more of them? Does that stuff actually work? Does it work better if it comes earlier? On who?
what is 5 too many for you? lol Just kidding I couldnt help myself, still a little sore over the events of the past couple of days. What some of us in the marketing business would like to see some marketing for DA2 comparable to DA:O or ME 2. Waiting till 1 month out and only having 2 trailers and next to no new gameplay footage people on the fence on buying the game will lean the other way, the opposite of a marketers job.

It's all over the forums. DA2 is said to be of ME2 length, meaning approximately a third the length of Origins.

Length varies with user.
My first ME2 playthrough was about 5/8 as long as Origins.
