What's the point in treading old ground? We know enough about Anders already.

Sure, we know enough about him, but we have been able to properly romance him yet. I'm certain that Anders still has plenty of new things to "show" us....

There's still potential for Anders yet.

His phylactery is still missing!

Thedas Pony Express lost it in shipment between the Circle Tower and Denerim.  We are sorry for this inconvienence and will credit the Circle Tower back any shipping costs, along with a complementary gift basket including cheese, crackers, and a murder knife.  We hope you will continue to use Thedas Pony Express for all your shipping services.

All for a romance...?

I'll never understand this fanbase.

See, I disagree. We know next to NOTHING about him. We don't know if he's a noble or a commoner (my money is on commoner, but that just could be because of the accent). We don't know why he was spared tranquility. We don't know how he managed to escape that many times, or really WHY he tried so hard to. By contrast we know a HELL of a lot more about our other Awakenings companions, even Sigrun has a duster past that we get to delve into. Anders has next to NO backstory apart from the fact that yes, he was in the Tower and yes, he escaped tons of times.

I think DA2 will give us the opportunity to find out a lot of stuff about him, and I'm really looking forward to it.

And considering he's the Chuck Norris of Thedas:

If Anders isn't in DA2, DA2 will still be all about Anders.

Any character worth his/her salt has more than one story to tell. No, I don't think they would bring Anders back just to tread old ground, they'd make something else up for him to talk about and flesh him out more, I'd think that would be a no-brainer.

Actually, IIRC he himself mentions that once a mage passes the Harrowing (like he did), they cannot be made Tranquil.

True. But you would have thought he would get something other than a slap on the wrist and a year in solitary. I mean, Lily was sent to Aeonar, and she wasn't even a mage... makes me think there's a bit more to that story than Anders was giving us IYKWIM.

I'm pretty convinced that the mysterious mage man is Anders. Both the devs and Greg Ellis (guy who voiced Anders in Awakening) have been entirely silent about the matter, and I do think they would have told us if Anders wasn't making an appearance.

I mean, David Gaider did confirm that neither Morrigan Or Sten would be in DA2, so why not say Anders wasn't in it?

He was in solitary, but Anders does go on to say this:

"Eventually, I'm sure they would have branded me a maleficar, true or not, and exectued me."

Video here!

EDIT: As for Lily... she was sent to Aeonar for aiding and abetting a KNOWN maleficar.  As far as the Templars go, they don't think Anders is a maleficar (just a problematic mage), but as you can see in the video, Anders clearly believes that they would have grown tired of his escapes sooner or later, and executed him simply for being an annoyance.

Pretty harsh. :(

One of Ander's epilogues is that he's last seen on a pirate ship with a familiar woman.

He must be in this game alongside Isabella.

I thought it was that Namaya girl who helped him steal his Phylactery in Amaranthine.

I think most assume it was Isabela because of the 'pirate ship' detail. Plus, Namaya was an elf, right? It would probably have said 'elven woman' if that were the case.

Hmm, good point.

In that case... It's Anders.:o

A year of solitary confinement isn't what I would call a light punishment.

This. And even without any backstory whatsoever, he still managed to completely steal the show in Awakening. I'd say that's a character with serious potential.

So, uhm, at what point does something become so evident that it can no longer be considered a rumor?

^_^

In all seriousness, Anders as a companion is still very much a rumor. It's just that a lot of pieces fall into place just fine.

It makes me wonder if perhaps Anders is related to some influential people (and doesn't necessarily know about it). That sounds like the kind of thing that would force the Templars to be lenient when it comes to him, at least for the first couple of escape attempts.

I don't mind if Anders appears in DA2 I'd just prefer him not to be a companion.

David Gaider has said that Anders and Alistair are not related, therefore, Anders cannot (in anyway shape or form) be another son of Maric's.

What are all these pieces? People seem to believe this rumour strongly and I feel like I'm missing something. I've seen the group shot of the party, featuring a blonde haired man that looks rather like Anders (and other NPCs). I've seen the picture in the book Cassandra gives to Varric (although that picture is so vague it could just about be any human male with light hair). And of course, there's the Awakening epilogue.
Is there some other clue I'm missing??

^I think the other clues are basically that the party is missing a second mage (and a spirit healer at that). So not only does the dude in those pics look like Anders, but Anders also just happens to be a healer mage.

Devs have also said various things about how they are willing to overwrite epilogues to bring back characters (applies to Anders), and that the reason they would bring back a certain character was to develop them more because they only barely scraped the surface in Origins/Awakening (also strongly applies to Anders).

Anders is way better choice then Justice.Anders should be a party member even the awakening epilouge says it.That Anders travelled with a ship for a long time probally Isabela's ship.Anders should be in the game and you should have a Romance option for him if Hawke is female.

ONE epilogue says he traveled.

In my epilogue he lived with the wardens for the rest of his life after disappearing for a few months.
He also died in another.

Same here but they might make a cannon story for him and they will put his ending as him leaving on the boat

I know they CAN do that, but frankly it's frustrating that they would. DA seems to be all about this massive story that you create, just ignoring something because they feel like it seems cheap. If they want to bring characters back they should plan ahead and then leave room for that in every epilogue. But oh well.
