Ignoring the epilogues, there are only three variables to Anders:

-Not conscripted by the Warden, in which case he was sent back with the templars and his fate is unknown to us.
-Conscripted by the Warden, in which case he undergoes the Joining, and then sent away with the templars during his personal quest. Again, without the epilogues, his fate is unknown.
-Conscripted by the Warden who then defends him against Rylock.

So basically it comes down to Warden/NotWarden and even that could be leveled out if they wanted to by saying that he escaped the templars and joined the Wardens in another country

As for Origins timeline, the way I understand it is that Origins covers one year, Awakening takes place 6 months after Origins and is roughly 3-6 months. That's two years out of the 10 that DA2 spans. Since we skip a year near the beginning, that would cover at least half of that.

Despite my obvious Anders fangirlism, I understand why people would want a new companion for DA2 or why people don't like him (even though I can't quite wrap my head around wanting to kill a companion, but that's neither here nor there). I just wanted to point out that IF he is included in DA2, it doesn't have to break lore or your Awakening playthough where you sent him off with the templars.

(I am, again, excluding epilogues from this as the devs themselves have indicated that epilogues aren't necessarily canon once you start playing expansions/DLC.)

All the options with Anders seem too great to just shrug off in Dragon Age 2. Did he feel betrayed by the Wardens if he gets sent off? Did he like being a Warden or not? Why did he fake his death? So many questions would arise, the lack of an answer might seem as a plot hole, because the Darkspawn might still be a significant threat.

Or maybe they will answer every possible question and Anders will be a companion, but it seems like too much work. With Oghren, there was just liking or hating him, and developing or starting the Felsi line later.

As much as I'd love Anders to return...I don't think it'll be him. I mean, he also vaguely Sebastian (in my opinion anyway) and wait... isn't he already in game!? Haha

They could easily express those things in one or two lines when you first meet him (like they do when you recruit Garrus in ME2 if you didn't recruit him in ME). And Oghren's approval is set to 0 in Awakening no matter how much he liked or disliked you in Origins. If they were willing to gloss over something like that with the very same PC, why would they feel the need to detail how Anders felt about the Warden when he's speaking with Hawke?

But.. doesn't DA2 starts same time period of DA:O (more or less)? I mean, the warden commander meets Anders a roughly a year after the destruction of Lothering, then we have the awakening story arc, which lasts a couple of months (not sure about this, could be more or less but without the night/day cicle is difficult to tell...). This means that even if he abandons the wardens right after the siege of Vigil's Keep it won't be possible for him to reach the Free Marches in less than a year and an half.

On top of that he dies in one ending (when you don't upgrade the keep), and in another one it's stated that he remains with the wardens to train the Order's next generation of mages.

So, even if I love Anders and I would not mind having him again as a companion, I think is really difficult for the misterious companion to be him. I guess we'll have to cope with the fact that he'll be a happy grey warden for the rest of his life.

It starts concurrently with DAO, but it takes place over a ten year period. There's no reason why Anders couldn't show up in say, year 3 or 4.

I addressed all of these things here. Anders could conceivably arrive in Kirkwall within two years of Hawke leaving Lothering.

David Gaider has said that they are willing to ignore epilogues if they wanted to bring a character back badly enough.

I would be rather unhappy if all the possibilites were covered by just a few lines. But I suppose I can imagine Anders being curt and snarky about it all.

Personally I don't think Anders will be brought back because there's not much more direction for him to go. He's not like Merill or Isabela, who we spent all of 3 minutes with in Origins. The Warden had a chance to get to know Anders, to befriend Anders. I feel like if "Anders" is actually Anders, there will be a lot of similar if not identical content to what was there in Awakening.

I've been thinking and I really can't see Anders being in this game. Merrill and him are both apostates, its not a good balance. In DAO you had a good mage Wynne, and a benevelent one Morrigan. Unless they make it where Merrill uses her blood magic powers for good sense she is a elf, and Anders uses his powers for selfish reasons. That's the only way I can see it working, just my opinion though. Two apostates is just too much.

Anders, for all his apostate-ness, does not want to see the mages break off from the Chantry.  He expresses this forcefully when you meet Wynne.  When Justice tells him he should fight against the oppression of mages, he basically says "eh."  He's also against maleficar and is a spirit healer, so would balance Merrill gameplay wise.  He's sort of a Circle mage who just wants to be allowed to come and go as he pleases.  It reminds me of people I met in the Communist bloc back when it still was, who were ardent supporters both of socialism and of the freedom to travel.  *edit to add:  So it might be interesting to see a person like that forced to choose sides.

Ok, all I'm gonna say about 'Anders' returning is this...UNTIL we get conformation he is in the game as a companion...I will refer to him as the "badass in the trench coat" because outside of his appearance there is no way to tell exactly who he is or what he doing in Kirkwall at that particular time. Meaning, I don't see any knowledge to support or deny the claim that he will show up in the game other than it being for some sort of cameo appearance like 'drunk' alistar depending on some save carryovers..

Yes, preference, and in order to please everyone's preference we need to have choices and so far there are no human choices for us preferring to play a straight female!

They have yet to reveal the last remaining character, and it's likely to be a male, a mage, and a returning character. Anders fits the description, and then the mage in the picture sure looks a lot like him.

Besides, we're not 100% sure it is the real Anders. It's just the one slightly obscured picture we've seen with the character that we assume is a companion sort of looks like Anders. That's why if you see him refferenced it's probably written as "Anders." In quotes.

Maybe its like The Force Unleashed II and it will be an Anders clone. ;)

Well since Anders could have "died" they are obviously bringing back Justice in his body. Or so I can wish.

Now THAT would be amusing. If Justice though Kristoff's memories were awkward, I can only imagine what sorts of stuff Anders has filed away for reference. Naughty spell combinations, trysts in the Tower supply closets, that one time he walked in on Velanna changing...I think Justice might abandon ship were that the case.

I'm not convinced its Anders. There were lots of characters in DA that look like Anders/Alistair. For example the mage in the Stone Prisoner quest.

Also, let us not forget that Isabella and Merril look completely different and we are basing our speculation on it being Anders on the fact that it looks like Anders? I don't really get that logic.

I would happily welcome Anders if it was him though. He and Nathaniel are my two favourite male companions across all DA games so far.

Oh I didn't actually play awakening so I just assumed Anders was more of of a evil character. I just want Merrill to be more of a virtuous character that tries to use her blood magic powers for beneficial purposes, like trying to protect her clan. I think she should be like Zathrian just without the spite for humans. If she ends up being like Morrigan V2 then Anders and I are gonna be best buds. Merrill should have internal struggles about using blood magic, but knows she has to use it for her clans sake. She is a keeper isn't she?

Necromancers raised anders from the dead.

Who knows why they did it but he set off and was captured by PIRATES.

Is that an answer for you?

I liked Anders and I'd like him as a companion, I just think the "Anders" in the picture looks baldish and not ponytailish.

The epilogue said he died of an arrow through the neck, but maybe he just used one of these
