I don't think they'd put Sebastian in that picture. The reason I say this is because he's DLC of course. A Sebastian has white armor and brown hair. This guy in the picture has a faint 5 O'clock shadow and an earring on his left ear but it very hard to seeRiosred wrote...

Anders will remain with the Grey Wardens to train the Order's next generation of mages. When he is called by the Circle of Magi to deliver a lecture on the nature of the Architect - much to the templars' dismay - he tells the Commander of the Grey that his time with the Wardens is over. No longer a part of the Wardens, the Chantry brands him an apostate, but never captures him. He is last seen on a pirate ship with a familiar woman.
the familiar women is obviously isabella.
anders is said to have been to kirkwall. timeshift in DA2 when awakening takes place. then after shift anders returns and tells you all about it
solved.

Pretty poor quality, but it's the best I could do from that itty bitty picture. I think that the resemblance is pretty uncanny, but again, that proves nothing. This is just a closer look.
Why would I do this, you ask? Any excuse to get away from writing my essay.....

Edit: and here's actual size, if the blurriness bothers you.

He has a fascinating character, and we only caught a glimpse of it in Awakenings. He has potential to be tremendously complex and he'd fit perfectly with the new companions. I personally don't understand the complaints outside of a certain distaste for the character. If its Anders, give the boy a chance.

Oh I didn't actually play awakening so I just assumed Anders was more of of a evil character. I just want Merrill to be more of a virtuous character that tries to use her blood magic powers for beneficial purposes, like trying to protect her clan. I think she should be like Zathrian just without the spite for humans. If she ends up being like Morrigan V2 then Anders and I are gonna be best buds. Merrill should have internal struggles about using blood magic, but knows she has to use it for her clans sake. She is a keeper isn't she?
I think it's safe to say that if it is Anders, he's different enough to Merrill that there wouldn't be overlap either gameplay wise or story. It would just be a lot like Awakening where you had Velanna or Anders.
Merrill is the keeper Marethari's first, her apprentice. At least as of Origins that's what she was. Obviously Marethari is having second thoughts if she's sending her off with Hawke.

For that matter, I'm not sure how you rate Morrigan as "benevolent"? I like Morrigan, but that isn't a word that springs to mind concerning her character.

Yes, preference, and in order to please everyone's preference we need to have choices and so far there are no human choices for us preferring to play a straight female!
One cannot please everyone.
And was there not a female sailor in one of his stories? But to be honest, the only thing that irks me about Anders being a companion are the fans.

Why? Is this an Anders fan specific thing or the fact that he has pre-existing fans at all?

Sooo... Anders fans are annoying because (a few) Alistair fans are annoying? LOL okay I'm guessing you know that doesn't make sense.Russalka wrote...
I may have sounded a bit too harsh. But I foresee a gush thread not unlike the one Alistair has, and I recently learned to resent them. Plus, having Anders is so mainstream.

I'd rather have someone new personally, but tbh a male Circle mage is always gonna have a tough climb in terms of my taste in LI. It's the man-skirt thing. No one but Sean Connery can pull that off.

I do not expect them to make sense to anyone. If I listed the various and more definite reasons that have made me feel distaste, someone might feel insulted.
I liked Anders, but I feel adding him into this story might feel a bit forced, and not meaningful. Two sentences here and there would explain his arrival, flight from the Wardens. But it is foolish to speak of the quality of something, before having to have seen the game.

In Dragon Age Origins we had Oghren, Zevran, and Alistair so why notThe RustMonster wrote...
Here's something else that makes me feel like it's not actually Anders. Personality wise, Anders was the loudmouthed, snarky, funny guy in Awakening. In DAII, that role is already filled by both Varric and Isabela, at least from what we've heard about them. Do you really think we'll have 3 companions with such similar personalities?

There's already an Anders gush thread btw.HERE.
Now, I may be a little biased, because I'm one of the fans myself, but I think if you take a look there's a fairly large difference between the Alistair thread and the Anders thread. Have a look at the Fenris thread if you're worried about gushing fans.
And to be honest, no one is going to force their fangirlishness down your throat. You don't need to take part in a gush thread if you don't want to. There's that whole "free will" thing going on!

If they are going to the Deep Roads shouldn't they have a Grey Warden with them? It would make sense to have Anders since he is a Warden and wasn't it suspected that the next companion would be a male mage?
That's a good point. There WILL be darkspawn in DA2 (even though we really don't know how many) and thus far we don't know of any Warden companions.

That is because he was not a love interest.

In Origins everybody felt snarky and funny in one way or another. Even Wynne had her moments.
