Playing my 4th origin now and I have to aggree that giving yourself up is the better option in terms of loot, story and well...you get to see the two companions who likes you most do a skit before trying to rescue you. And of course the banter when they realise you just "rescued" yourself. :)

Still, I did it kill Ser Cautherien on my second playthrough as an AW, which in my opinion is one sick overpowered class. Too many ways to win against her if you are an AW (or playing as another caster for that matter). Most common is the force field the tank trick though I did it re-attempt killing Ser Cautheien a few times just to see if its possible by using other methods. Namely you can disable her via Crushing prison, paralyse and high level deathroot based poisons not to mention using debilitating skills such as weaken and such to bring her resistance down so that you do alot more damage to her. Hex her and put bllizzard up and she'll be frozen for most of its duration. Essentially doing anything that takes her out of the fight and nothing is more helpless, even a heavily armored knight, if she can't fight or aviod being hit.

Playing as city elf rouge now so it'll be interesting to see if I can beat her again without all my earlier spellpower.

After reading many times how difficult this fight was I decided to go back to a previous save to try it out. And yes, she hits very hard. In this particular save I had Alistair, Zevran, and Morrigan with me. I had Alistair tanking her like mad but in the end I managed to take her out on my first try.

The trick, ultimately was moving her into a nearby room behind us where the mages and archers didn't follow. My PC would quickly take out any of the other stragglers that did approach, when I wasn't going all out on Cauthrien.

It should be said I ended up going through ALOT of health pots in this fight, and she could kill Alistair in two hits if I wasn't careful. But Morrigan kept freezing her throughout the fight, proving most useful. Beyond that it was a basic tank and spank.

It was interesting to see the codex updated afterwards that explains how she dies. Made me feel bad that I killed her actually since I had a lot of respect for her character.

I eventually managed to kill everyone but Ser Cauthrien (took many reloads on nightmare.) Eventually I was left with my healer with a ton of aggro and had to kite her around while my other chars shot her in the back. She's pretty much impossible to tank untethered.

I beat her, but I had to lower it down to easy until the adds were dead (then bumped it back up to normal- kinda cheesy, I know). There are simply too many mobs in that room to take on at once. Even if you move out into the hallway there are still alot.

But anyways move out, toss in a fireball, inferno etc. That should help thin things out.

I just love how everyone gets mad at Anora for 'double-crossing' you. In truth, you double-crossed her first if she does double cross you, because the plan was to keep her presence secret and you went ahead and said something to the effect of, 'But she's right here! Tell 'em, Anora!'

I don't really have anything else to say that hasn't been said other than that unless you REALLY want that sword which you'll get later on anyway, you should just let her kill you.

Anora is a total player. She just uses everyone to get in power.  I wish there was an option to gut her after u kill that wench Ser Cauthrien.  Also, a REAL grey warden never surrenders.

Somenoe should have made her a Grey Warden - she would solo the Archdemon.

Only if she brings a bow or has some trap skill.

Defeating her is easy.

Tell your party to hold in the room just outside the hall where Cauthrien is waiting, then go in solo to lure a couple of them after you.

Have them follow you to the rest of the party, Cauthrien herself will most likely be among the ones following. Kill her and the others, then return for the archers and the mage.

I beat her first attempt... crowd control is the key - I didnt even run out of the room (which IS a cheap tactic - exploiting bad AI - aka the archers dont follow). As soon as the fight starts I cast sleep (such an OP spell) - everybody but Cath and 1 melee guy got slept, I then moved my party into the corner of the room.

I put Alistair onto Cath to tank her and put Zevran onto Cath to start dps on her. If you have specced Alistair properly to tank during your playing (Put lots of points in Dex!) she will barely hit him if at all.

After everyone is in position - my mage then cast mass paralysis, then cast death cloud and wynne cast Fire Storm. Watch all the archers die in about 5 secs. The enemy mage had to be re-paralysed with the single target one but no biggy. Once this was done and AoE gone - only thing left alive was Cath / 1 Melee soldier and the enemy mage on about 30% health. I finished off the mage quickly - kept him controlled with horror etc, and then finished off the melee guy and then its tank spank to victory as you dps down cath.

If she is hitting your tank so easily - then you aint speccing your tanks properly. I only had to keep a regenerate on him to keep him alive.

My party was myself mage specced into all the entropy spells. Wynne had her heal spells etc but I also specced her into all the fire spells. I had Zevran and Alistair as well.

It is easily doable without cheapening it by running away and exploiting bad AI IF you have lots of crowd control and AoE. Goodluck!

But on my second run I plan to surrender cause I want to see what happens.

I did it in a really lame way. I ran back the moment I could, only pulled her and two guards. I killed the guards and kept Forcefield on my tank as much as I could. Yay for a fancy sword I didn't need.

My party and I were so quickly and thoroughly destroyed I figured it must be one of those "you must lose" moments you come across in games once in awhile. I didn't even try to beat her after that.

I hate that Loghain butt-kissing Ser Cautherine chick, but I personally wouldn't want to kill her on the first encounter, lest I miss out on the hilarious rescue mission.

Besides, I can always shove my sword into her face later on when she doesn't have her legion of archers who all Scattershot on their first volley...

It is definitely possible. I used waking nightmare on the archer line, and just killed the rest normally. I was level 22 by the time though.

Split across a team of 4 I had lots of war cry's, dirty fighting, mindblasts, deadly howls, sleep etc. In my combats the enemies are all knocked senseless by one of those skills while my rogue main character PC backstabs even top level bosses (not end dragon) from 100% health to dead in 5 seconds. Critical attack every hit, with Starfang and 3 top level enchantments.

Chained Blood Wound with my 2 mages to keep the small fry at bay, Misdirected Cauthrien. Between Misdirects she hit really hard, but using heals and poultices I was able to keep the tank up (Alistair with sword and shield). The trick is to keep the archers nullified the entire time; if they get free they can stun lock your entire group. Easily the hardest fight of the game at this late stage where almost nothing could challenge my group.

I drew Cautherin into the hallway, only one lackey followed her in and shut the door. I had my mage and Wynne. They kept cone of colding her while Alister & Sten hacked away with Stone-Fists thrown by mages who then drank Lyrium and kept it going. Alister & Sten had to swallow a couple heals, but she seemed to target Alister when she unthawed, but it ended up so much easier than I could have imagined. Then, with the door still closed, the mages threw fire storm, fire ball and ice storm over and over until everyone in the main room beyond was dead, the team then went and looted everyone and strolled out of the castle.

Another thing that may have been due to this, I do not know, at the Landsmeet, only one old guy went for Loghain, everyone else sided with my Warden.

I just fought this battle, ended up losing on purpose but I did kill her again. I disabled all of my healing potion tactics so I didn't waste them. I had Alistair, Zevran, my rogue, and Wynn. We ran back into the hallway because you'd have to be stupid to not try to get cover from the archers. Wynn dropped a glyph of warding and we all stood on it. Ser Clauthrien was the first out the door. I had Alistair taunt her while my rogue and Zevran used Mark of Death and got into position for backstabs. I was using as many stunning attacks as I could, plus deathroot and crow poisons, but they aren't very effective on her. I had Wynn cast the armor boosting spell she gets on Alistair. To my surprise we ended up killing her without using any potions and without losing anyone--however, right after that my rogue bit the dust, and we lost Alistair as well because Wynn was out of mana. Zevran and Wynn ran down the hall to hide from the archers and actually managed to kill four more soldiers who followed (and loot Ser Cauthrien's corpse!) before I decided to end the combat and ran them out into the entry to be slaughtered.

LOL yes, this fight can most certainly be won. Either by luring her into one the back rooms with just a few guards in tow, spamming AoE on the whole room and choking them with a glyph, freezing all the archers and manaclashing the mage while Ser Cautherine is Force Fielded. It's meant to be impossible odds but is quite doable.

It would be more impossible if her followers weren't told to stay rooted to the spot.  Maybe someone can make a mod for that.

That's true, the key to making the fight winnable at all is not getting cut in half by that giant sword while you mess with the archers. If you can get rid of half the archers and the mage, Ser Cautherine can easily fall to focused fire. If the archers would follow you, that would get rid of luring her away, but as it is you can usually Cone of Cold the archers in big clumps and whittle them down that way.

By his late teen levels, nothing could touch my Arcane Warrior when he had Fade Shroud, Shimmering Shield, Death Magic, Telekinetic Weapons, Arcane Armor, Spell Wisp and Rock Armor activated. Barely anything could hit him, the things that did hit didn't do much damage (even though he wore a robe!), and if there were a few non-elite enemies around to kill, Death Magic and the occasional potion kept him at full health. He literally soloed the Archdemon using the above.

Ser Cauthrien had no chance. My mage crowd controlled her, blasted her and her henchmen, then activated God Mode.

1) you cannot have that many things activated....epic fail...
2) unless you play on noob zone easy, something will always hit....epic fail...
3) With a robe you're doomed to get a ton of damage from big boss hits...epic fail...

conclusion: Piece of s*** liar.

Possible reason: His arcane warrior sucks ass but meh it's his strongest character.

Um, yes you can have that many things active...

You just need a decent amount of mana to work with. Right now, my AW has Combat Magic/Arcane Shield/Rock Armor/Fire Weapons/Miasma and when I get enough magic going, I'll bring on another aura, probably Shimmering Shield.

Can't cast anything but you can have them on. B)

Two attributes of importance for Mages: Magic and Willpower. After the base amount of Mana, each additional point of Willpower adds 5 points Mana (or stamina). Not enough mana? Dump your next 2 level's worth of Attribute points into Stamina. 30 points mana right there.

Yes it is possible to beat Ser Cauthrien at Arl Howe's place, but it requires you use every possible trick you can think of.

Mage - Mass crowd control spells like sleep and mass paralysis. Use the cheesy spells like crushing prison on Cauthrien.

Rogue - Chain-bomb the archers till all your bombs are under cooldown.

Basically use the most powerful spells and aoe abilities.

Kept my tank alive as long as possible while two rogues took the adds down quickly. Had her health down a good bit. Finished her off with my rogue. Pretty much 50/50 dex/cun. Doesn't get hit often and has nasty backstabs. Run, stealth, heal, backstab, repeat. But a stun procced from my Concentrated Crow poison and she went down pretty fast after that. She is nasty though.

Is it possible to kill her? Yes

Its easy to kill her at the landsmeet building , its VERY hard to kill her in the arls estate though , when she has like 10 rangers and a mage with her its psychotically hard even on normal mode , requires good strategy
