I had fun with this fight my second playthrough. I knew the fight was coming so I covered the entire floor with spring traps before going to Anora. The enemies were too busy falling all over themselves to do any fighting while I cleaned house lol.

It bothers me that this fight is the hardest in the game. It makes the Archdemon feel anti-climactic. Ser Cauthrien could probably solo the Archdemon without any healing. Never mind the fact that she also comes with a Scattershot Firing Squad, a yellow mage, and some warriors.

While I understand you don't technically have to fight, if you're trying to roleplay someone that never surrenders, you HAVE to fight. Otherwise it just feels lame. If they wanted it to be impossible, they should just have you get knocked out if you try to fight, so you can escape with your pride intact.

While I'm on this subject... does it bother anyone else that you are forced to walk into the middle of the room before the fight starts? I mean come on. You open the door, you see guards forming a semi-circle around your only escape, and instead of holding the line from the doorway, you for some reason feel compelled to waltz into the middle of the room and have a conversation with your arch-nemesis's top lieutenant, who just hours ago threw unanswered insults in your face?? ARGH! I mean.... ARGH!!

Reminds me of fighting Jarvia...

ARGH!!!!!!

I managed to get off a storm of the century by throwing everyone but my mage into ser caut and her archers, needless to say we all went to the hells together.

Yes she was extremely tough. 5 or 6 tries I think and my main was at 19th level. I really thought the sword would turn out to be more than it was. She must have huge strength.

Blizzard and then alternated Fireball on the droogs and Cone of Cold on her. I had to let her chase my wizard for a couple of laps after she snuffed my two melee types and Wynne wittled on her with staff shots.

"Just letting Ser Cauthrien take you to jail (Fort Drakar) is more fun
though as you can either break out on your own or let your companions
do it for you. "

Not so fun for me as I escaped rather than waiting for ocmpanions and lost all my inventory inlcuding healing components and juggernaut armour!  Is there nay way of avoiding losing the existing inventory when you are locked up!

There's a chest by the exit to the room you are held in, open it and you get your inventory back.

Bummer! Reload!

Ummm... all of your equipment is in the chest right by the exit to the room your cell was in. In fact all you have to do is touch it and re-equips you as you were, LOL

The fight with her was a pain, but doable, my human noble Im running through with decided to fight her rather than " give up peacefully" and it took time, but we did beat her ( okay Wynn, and Morrigan beat her, My noble and Liliana went down about half way through the fight)

I killed her with no mages in the party, in Nightmare... I may upload the vid someday... but I reloaded and surrendered to keep the zero injury till the end (when I got the achievement for it) and I wanted to record the companions for my best party series...

They sure gave me and a few other ppl some amazing hard laughing moments! (in the Epilogue of the series and Prison Break special) =)

(Since it would take us some 20 playthoughs to watch them all or that many reloads, I don't think it will spoil much for those who haven't seen them)

Yes it's possible. Beat her on normal. Lured her alone to a nearby room, had about 30 health potions and started slowly chipping away at her health. Even then it took me like 5 tries. Once I actually got rid of her, I used blizzard and tempest on the rest of the archers

I think the reason this fight is so brutally hard is that Bioware really wants you to experience the Fort Drakon breakout sequence. There's a lot of fun stuff there, from starting out naked in your cell with Alistair (shwing!) to the goofy disguises to your companions fighting over who would best be able to rescue you.

Cauthrien is MUCH easier to kill when she confronts you in the Landsmeet, if you are trying to get her sword. Killing her at Howe's is meant more as a sort of meta-achievement to brag about on forums. ;)

I thought it wasn't possible but I did kill her before the landsmeet. I got her sword and routed the remaining guards at the entrance of the house of Arl of Denerim, it wasn't easy though. My party consisted of Alistair, Oghren, my Rogue Assassin, and Wynne. The remaining guards were killed one by one since it was hard to melee them.

I killed her by drawing two of loghains guards with her into Anora's room.

Spammed bombs to get rid of the guards and then the three of us went toe to toe with her. Wynne, poor dear was lost in the confused rush for the door. (In nightmare - she would hit me for 60-70 not more. Is it because of high dex? My char had dex in the 40s then and was Effort). Anyway, lopped her head off, picked up her sword and went to the main hall - and promptly got killed by the remaining mage and archers.

And then, what do you know, shes there in the Landsmeet as well.

Killed her again with the Summer Sword, and took another from her corpse...

The battle isn't that bad if you have good crowd control. But she hits like a truck. I usually beat it with Morrigan and Wynne keeping everything locked down, Zevran destroying everything, and my PC tanking, and using more than a few consumables. Traps help a lot as well.

She shouldn't be one-shotting a geared tank, and if she's not one-shotting you, you can beat her. Hex of Misdirection owns her, as it does any pure melee.

I beat her and all those archers by casting Storm of the Century in that room before the cut scene happens. Then run in and activate the cutscene. Run out of the room way down the hallway. Most of the people will die. Hopefully a few of your party members stay alive to keep Ser Cautherine in the room so she takes damage from the Storm Spell. Eventually she will come after you. In my case she was half dead. Then it makes taking her down much more do-able. I am happy I beat that fight cause I read so much about it on here, but I wish I had gone to Fort Drakon so I could get the Area Unlock. Summer Sword isn't even that good.

well you can.. I killed everyone in the room except for a single foot soldier, tank his blows while picking up spoils including the Summer Sword. After which I had my party kill themselves using AoE (on nightmare btw) while the soldier was still alive.

This battle was too be the hardest one I planned in my playthru since I made sure not to use forcefield and retreat into Anora room tatics. Still needed CoC though. The thing is my rig suffered massive performance problem. I was running on the lowest setting and still recieving "combat lag" (eg. an animation of fireball appears only to have the knockdown effect and dmg realized ~5secs later). I still managed but it was more frustrating more than satisfying due to the "lag".

I only failed once on my first character. The easiest was by far my Rogue. I had her with Dual Weapon Mastery and two really good swords with The Felon's Coat and almost solo-ed the fight. Nothing could hit me except the Mage's staff and the archers hit me a few times, but my party died out quickly and I killed like 89% of the enemies (including Cauthrien) without help.

My mage was an Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer and with all my buffs, debuffs and Group Heal and Resurrection, the fight was a cake walk.

Just be sure to have your tactics set right. I had Leliana shoot arrows at the Mage (as usual for me) and Shale had all the aggro while I hit the guards with Virulent Walking Bomb (took care of all of them pretty much) and then turned my attention to Cauthrien with my 2H Starfang with paralyze runes and Alistair had the Keeing Blade and Fade Wall and some added runes and the only death was Alistair, but he was Revived as soon as I noticed he was down.

This fight seamed really easy for me even on nightmare solo run, was an AW/BW so I just cast mass paralysis first, ran around killing people then when that was up i cast blood wound killed more people then cast blood control if needed.

LOL, you get the sword later at the landsmeet so why bother killing her and missing out on a good area with loot and xp to be had (saving you from the castle)

How does Xp total for surrender/escape compare to killing her and all the guards??

On my current playthru, I am using dw rogue main with 2 mages and 1 tank. It was frustrating for me due to COMBAT LAG. I can't even turn on blood magic as my response will take seconds to register. I needed to open battle with CoC and fireball to take care of archers as they are the relatively insta-cast as compared to other spells. I can only imagine how it was if the game played the way it supposed to. I din say it was hard (although I suppose it is the hardest battle wrt the individual walkthru given the same setup) .... it was just frustrating to deal with intrinsic issues.
