On my current playthru, I am using dw rogue main with 2 mages and 1 tank. It was frustrating for me due to COMBAT LAG. I can't even turn on blood magic as my response will take seconds to register. I needed to open battle with CoC and fireball to take care of archers as they are the relatively insta-cast as compared to other spells. I can only imagine how it was if the game played the way it supposed to. I din say it was hard (although I suppose it is the hardest battle wrt the individual walkthru given the same setup) .... it was just frustrating to deal with intrinsic issues.

I did it once in my first playthrough, but realised that I could not get the travellers achievement, since you are locked out of Fort Drakon if you take that path, so haven't done it since. But this is how I did it.

1.Run back the way you came and take shelter from the ranged attack. If you run far enough some of them will choose not to follow you.
2. Deal with the enemies that have followed you. If Sir Cath then prepare for long battle.
3. Switch to Ranged weapon, and lure the left over enemies infront of the gate one by one & deal with them. If you have a mage with AOE use it.

It is a lot harder than it sounds.

Well... iirc you WILL STILL get Fort Drakon since you need to journey there at Final Battle. In my 1st playthru (which alr utilize the tatic you mentioned), I did not get captured and still got travellers.

I appreciate your post but as I said I intentionally wanted to be in the same room as the archers. Against any well build char, Ser Cauthrien IS nothing. The tricky part is having 8+ scattershot that wipe the party. I planned to disable the archers asap but my rig lagged more than it shd.

It was FRUSTRATING for me as the challenge did not come from the difficulty of the fight but from the game's performance (on the lowest settings at that). Thus, it was not satisfying. Hell, a solo nm run will be easier based on the basis of reduced lag.

LOL, you get the sword later at the landsmeet so why bother killing her and missing out on a good area with loot and xp to be had (saving you from the castle)

How does Xp total for surrender/escape compare to killing her and all the guards??

MikeK

Kill (and loot) everyone except one guard, then let that guard kill you.  You get the sword (which isn't that good) and the majority of the XP, plus you get to talk her down at the Landsmeet instead of killing her (which I find to be a more satsifying option.)

This, however, might require stripping off all your gear, turning your back to the guard, and waiting for quite a while as the guard seems to continuously whiff.

Edit:  The real challenge is to do it in the ambush room without running away.  I managed to do it with my dex-rogue, Alistair, Oghren and Wynne, with only Oghren hitting the floor (though I ressed him partway through the fight, after Cauthrien was dead.)

i think the sword is better when you beat her the first time, with a extra knockback effect or something

Oh really? I kinda remembered that the Summer Sword items overlap in my inventroy in my playthru (ie. exact replicas)

Just letting Ser Cauthrien take you to jail (Fort Drakar) is more fun though as you can either break out on your own or let your companions do it for you. Funny dialog throughout and much easier, but you won't get Cauthrien's two-handed sword, Summer. The stats on it are not that great, but I ended up killing Ser anyway to see what it looked like.

I allways do this, well I put up the fight to get the extra xp, but the side mission is fun.   My last playthrough with my Arcane warrior (only gave BM for the points, never learned the line).  I did kill off half of the soldiers, but the set wasn't CC, he was more Necro/Warrior.  I think when I do my city elf I'm going to try to kill almost all them and than die at the end.

Question is for those that kill every one, what is your next step in game play?  I assume they skip the dungeon so what happens next?

To mrmike, for a party of main 21 and npc 20s', I got ~900 for killing Cauthrien. I got another ~800 for escaping Fort Drakon. (I rampaged and killed everyone instead of disguising).

Well jaschun... I have already killed her in the archer room before my initial post in this thread... I merely ****ed on how frustrating it was when the challenge did not come from the fight itself.
