Hello. I originally bought Mass Effect 2 without playing Mass Effect 1 and just read the storyline on Wikipedia. But I recently bought and played through Mass Effect 1 on Steam and am trying to import my character from ME1 to my cd copy of ME2.

Problem is whenever I open up ME2 and hit the option to import a Male ME1 character, no saved files or anything are ever listed, no matter how long I wait for one to show up and no matter how many times I try to exit out and start the game back up.

Is this because I have ME1 on Steam but a regular copy of ME2? If so, is there a way to work around this? I'd be really upset if this was the case because the only reason I bought ME1 was so I could import a character into ME2 and play through it again...

Also, on a side note, where in Windows 7 are your ME1 and ME2 saved games? I've looked all over my computer's hard drive and have found nothing, which is a shame because after a while I'd like to be able to delete these games off of my hard drive (they take up quite a lot of space) but retain the saved game files for ME3!!

Thanks for the help! :)

Im not sure if Steam saves them into a different place, but the save folder in retail is in Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect 2.

To import your saves properly, you need to open the configuration for Mass Effect 2 (from the launcher), go to "save games" then "copy Mass Effect 1 save games" then locate your save folder.

You can only import a character that has finished the ME1 game... but they can pick a new speciality e.g. Infiltrator > Sentinel.

Yeah, I did this today.. I have the steam version and it was in My Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect/Save and it will be I think the profile listed there.. Just copy that and paste it to My Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect 2/Save/ME1 and it should pick up that profile in game.

It sounds like shinder's issue was assuming that ME2 would automatically pick them up from their place in the ME1 save folder. A reasonable assumption, but unfortunately not the case.

You can either move them manually as Chaidrais says, or use the import file tool in ME2's Config utility (in which case you only need to know the location of ME1's save folder, it will copy them automatically).
