So, I tried to install the game, asks for a ridiculous 35 digit CD key - I put it in and start installation.  20 minutes later the setup tells me that there's a DirectX error, i read up on the forums that I need DirectX 9.0

So, I install Direct X and restart setup.  Now, after I put in the CD key, it tells me that it's Invalid!!!

What the hell is up with this?  Pretty sure I typed it in correctly, I'm kinda pissed now =.=

What version of the game do you have? Straight NWN2, the Gold version or some other combination?

In the Gold version, sometimes the keys for NWN2 and MotB were switched during printing.

I'm having the same issue as well. I played the game many times and tried to install it this morning, but the game said my cdkey was invalid??? The key that is on the manual, wich I used so many times!
Anyway, read something about keys being switched with the OC and MoB. So I typed the code of MotB and the game installed. So weird, but of course that gave a problem later on.
While updating the game, I got a message in red saying: An incorrect version of the file was found on your system.

The updatingprocessing was aborted.

How do I get my cdkey to work? And no, I have no Gold or Platinum of whatever-version. I bought all the games seperately.

/edit: Solved.

I uninstalled nwn with revo-uninstaller, so nothing was left behind, not even in the registry.
I then opened the dvd, instead of auto-install the game.
I right-clicked on Setup.exe, choose use as Administrator ( or something like that, can't translate it in English from Dutch I'm affraid..) and I even scrolled through the Terms, but I don't think that makes sense :)

I can now use my own cdkey again and it's even patching. It did give me the directx-error, but since I don't play online or use the tools, that doesn't bother me to much. I never had a problem with that error.

But it's still strange that this issue comes up now, after I have played from this dvd so many times. And I never had to set anything on the Administrator-thing. Posted Image

I am having the same problem: when I try to install the game (original NWN2 disc bought about 4 years ago and installed & played successfully on a few different systems over the time) it says CD key invalid. I tried Ioeneke's fix (open disc and right click .exe select run as admin...). No luck. I'm unfortunately running vista business. 4 gigs of ram... any help will be appreciated.

Me too Techstomp, I suddenly had the craving to play neverwinter Nights 2 but all my cd keys are invalid: the original, motb, and SoZ. I tried Ioeneke's fix too but the revo uninstaller couldn't find anything to remove, so maybe I already uninstalled it right.

oh right we're meant to post our computer stats with problems my operating system is windows vista home premium, I have an Intel® Core™ 2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83Ghz 4.00 GB Ram, ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series.

I hope someone can help *fingers crossed*

Well I've got 3 pretty good computers running in front of me here. They rock the likes of GTA 4, Warhammer Battle March, Dead Space 2... but I can't get NVW2 to run on any of them!! One of these computers is the same one that the game was running on 2 1/2 yrs ago! (although it was Nuked since then, but it's the same OS). I'm close to filing this game under BS. WHERE'S THE TECH SUPPORT?! I PAID FOR THE GAME AND REGISTERED IT!! IT DOESN'T WORK FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE APPARENTLY... I THINK IT'S A CASE OF THE BIG CORPORATION GOT IT'S MILLIONS AND IS NOW DONE WITH US.

Obvious troll is obvious.  What are you?  12 years old or something?

Seriously, with this high quality description of the problem, nobody is going to be able to help.  System specs might help too.

Give those, in a literate manner and cut the hissy fit and someone will be able to steer you in the right direction.

Just saying (this is a last resort) you can find cd-keys on the internet for games like this.

Just got a new computer, because my old motherboard went belly up.

I now have an Alienware X51

Processor:
Intel Core i7-3770 (3.4GHz, 8MB Cache, w/ Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost 2.0)

Memory:
8 GB Dual Channel
DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz

Hard drive:
1TB SATA 3Gb/s (7,200RPM) 32MB Cache

Video Card:
1GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 555

Just tried to install NWN2 on the new PC, and it's saying my CD keys are invalid.

These are the original games, bought when they were first released.  I checked to make sure the key on the manual matched the key in the .ini file, and it does.  I even copy/pasted it directly.  (I have all of my save games, etc., off of my old hard drive.  I backed it up fairly regularly, thank god.)

Tried to install from the setup.exe, with all the correct permissions and compatibilities checked, and nada.

It's not like I play this game often.  Maybe once a year I'll fire it up, but it would still be nice if I could actually play it when I want to.

Any help would be appreciated.

SkRemaks, here is a copy of the tech support I had when I had the same issue. Hopefully it helps:

"If you get this error message at the end of the installation, it simply means that the installer has failed to detect DirectX 9c. There are two steps to solve this:

1) Install the latest DirectX End-User Runtimes :

http://msdn2.microso.../en-us/xna/aa9…

Here's the march 2008 version (as a web downloader) :
http://www.microsoft...ownloads/detai…

(as a full download + offline install) :
http://go.microsoft....link/?LinkID=1…

This won't fix the installer. However, it'll insure that you've got the right dll files so that the actual game can run without crashing.

2) Remove the DirectX folder from the installer's directory :

If you've got the digital download version, that's a fairly straightforward process. Unzip the installer somewhere using the executable that was given to you. The installation should start automatically. Cancel it without installing. Go to wherever you've unzipped the installer and delete the subfolder named DirectX.

Start the installation by running autorun.exe within the installer's directory. Install the game normally. At the end of the installation process, the program will ask that you reinsert the disc. Just press OK without changing anything.

The installer should skip the part where it verifies your installation of DirectX (which means you'll avoid the error message).

Update your game and enjoy.

If you've got the DVD version, you'll need to copy it on your hard drive first (so that you can remove the subfolder). I haven't tested this.

Invalid CD-KEY during the installation

For some obscure reason, uninstalling the game and reinstalling it in the same folder results in this error message.

The uninstall leaves a file behind called nwncdkey.ini. It appears that this file is actually the culprit here.

Just delete it before trying to install again.

As an example, if you're trying to install the game in
C:\\Program Files\\Atari\\Neverwinter Nights 2\\

Make sure that there's no nwncdkey.ini there first!

Thank you
Atari Support"

This helped me when I had issues. But I also decided to never ever uninstall this game...

Thanks for the help. I actually figured out that, for some reason, some of the game files got pulled over onto my new hard drive from the back up of my old one. One of those was the nwncdkey.ini file. Deleted it, and everything installed fine.

Anybody else who's having this problem, should make sure that file is deleted before trying a re-install.
